HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Exeter Times-Advocate, 1975-06-05, Page 8 (2)Exeter convincingly defeated
their Seaforth counterparts 3-0.
Thanks to some good defensive
work from half -backs Gib Dow
and Greg Peitsch, the Exeter
goalkeeper Dennis Eisenschink
was able to earn his second
shutout of the season in as many
starts.
Starring for Exeter was inside
right Jeff Pfaff, who scored two
well taken first-half goals.
Leader Scott Lovie worked hard
for the squirts, and was unlucky
not to .score on several oc-
casions.
The third goal that sealed the
issue for Exeter, came from a
penalty shot mid -way through the
second period. Right -half Kevin
Varley was the scorer, with a
high drive that gave the Seaforth
'keeper no chance."
At least two, and possibly four
exhibition games are presently
being arranged for the Exeter
squirts. These will be against
teams representing Sarnia and
Detroit. The Sarnia squad are the
reigning Ontario Minor Soccer
champions, while the Detroit
Kickers club are coached by ex -
Czechoslovakian international
and Detroit Cougar star Joe
Melczerick.

to perform successfully, and fare
well against Sarnia and Detroit,

their first starts in the Western
Ontario Athletic Association

home victories over Seaforth.
In the league opener Thursday,
the Crediton youngsters scored a
19-8 victory in Seaforth and
Sunday afternoon in their home
field they were victorious by a
score of 15-4.
Crediton coach Bob Osgood
used three pitchers in each
game. Paul Brooks, Larry Ryan
and Doug Mcisaac were the
hurlers in the opening contest and
Larry Ryan,. Paul Brooks and
Ken Pinder handled pitching
duties in the second tilt.
Centennials

The Exeter Centennials
dropped a 3-1 decision Sunday to
West Lorne in an Ausable
league soccer contest.
After trailing at half time, the
Centennials came back with the
only goal of the second half on a
successful boot by Ron Funston.

FOR ALL GOOD SPORTS

Sets
records
Sunday was a very important day for the Detroit Tigers
and one of their pitching stars for many years.
Southpaw Mickey Lolich who many sports authorities
thought was finished at the end of the 1974 American
baseball league season became the winningest left handed
Detroit pitcher in history.
Lolich held the Chicago White Sox to seven hits as he
recorded his 201st victory as a Tiger. At the same time
Lolich upped his strikeout total to 2,582. It moved him into
sixth place on the all-time strikeout list.
Sunday's strikeouts moved Mickey one ahead of former
Cleveland Indian ace Bob Feller and only two behind
Warren Spahn.
Lolich is certain to pass Spahn this season and move
into fifth spot on the all-time list of strikeouts. The old
Tiger record for a lefthander was 200 wins and held by Hal
Newhouser.
While on the subject of major league pitchers Catfish
Hunter is beginning to slow his worth with the New York
Yankees.
Signed to the largest contract ever offered to a pitcher,
Hunter got off to a slow start with the New York club. But
in recent games he has regained his stuff and Saturday
pitched a one -hitter for his seventh win of the season.
One baseball writer recently said. Hunter probably
needed the Oakland team to win 25 games but it could be the
other way around that the A's need Hunter to regain their
championship.
In watching several big league ball games on television
recently we were amazed at the number of outfielders using
only the glove hand to catch fly balls.
The method of coaching must be changing because back
when we played with the Zurich and Dashwood in-
termediate teams it was a real "no -no" to even attempt to
catch with one hand unless it was impossible to get both
hands on the ball.
Detroit Tigers broadcaster George Kell mentioned the
same thing during Sunday's telecast. Kell said he caught a
pop-up with one hand in a game when Connie Mack was his
manager.
When Kell came back to the bench Mack the grand old
man of baseball said "Is there something wrong with your
bare hand that you used only the glove."
Another unusual item appeared in Sunday's game
between Detroit and Chicago. White Sox manager Chuck
Tanner used Lee Richard as his designated batter but used
him in the lead-off position. Most managers put the
designated hitter in the fourth or fifth spot in the batting
order.
Busy summer ahead
The summer season is quickly approaching and
Exeter's RAP committee and recreation director Jim
McKinlay are lining up an excellent playground program.
Planning has been going on for several months and
McKinlay and playground supervisor Anne. Pinder feel
changes made will not only improve the program but make
it the best the area has ever known.
The playground staff has been increased from three to
six members. The new staff members are Pat Van Wierren,
Tracy Campbell and Marian Adams who will be joining
Anne Pinder, Laura Johns and Linda Ritchie who are ex-
perienced supervisors.
The junior playground program is being moved from
Victoria Park to the Exeter public school playground due to
the lack of washrooms, telephone and proper rain protec-
tion at the former location.
These facilities will be used at the arena and it is hoped
some of the problems of the past will be solved.
The junior group for boys and girls aged four to seven
years will be supervised by Linda Ritchie and Tracy
Campbell at the public school grounds and Ann Pindet and
Pat Van Wieren will be in charge of the intermediates aged
seven to eleven years. also at the public school.
Thesenior program will be operated at Ifiverview park
for boys and girls aged from 11 to 15 years with Laura Johns
and Marian Adams handling the supervision.
An innovation this year will be the establishment of a
leader -in training program which will train leaders for the
end of the program and hopefully for the following summer.
These young people will train for the first part of the
program and become helpers during the last half. Officials
hope for a good response so that more individual attention
may be given to those youngsters registered in the summer
playground program.
Plans are also being made to set up a crossing guard
system so children from the west side of town will be able
to participate in the program without the fear of crossing
Main street on their own.
If it is their first adventure across town they will be able
to learn their way to school a little earlier. Registration for
the summer playground and swimming programs will be
held on Saturday, June 14 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 1
p.m.
Registration fees for the eight week program for
juniors and intermediates will be $10 and the seniors will
pay $12. The latter group will be participating in several
outings.
Interesting horse show
The seventh annual Pinto and Appaloosa horse show
will be held this Saturday at Exeter Community Park and it
promises to provide plenty of interesting entertainment for
horse enthusiasts.
The show gets underway at 8 a.m. and will continue
throughout the day with 52 line and performance classes on
the program.
The judge will be Larry Edwards of Dayton, Ohio. He is
a top authority on the two breeds. Pintos and Appaloosas
are fast growing and colorful breeds. A similar show is be-
ing held the following day in Sarnia at the saddle club
grounds.
Ball clinic at Crediton
A minor baseball clinic will be
held at the Crediton ball diamond
Saturday afternoon from 1 • to 3
p.m..
In charge of the clinic will be
Brad Gregus of Exeter who is
currently in his third year with
the Stratford Intercoutlty' junior
baseball team and is the 1975
team captain.
Gregus will be assisted by
Stratford junior pitcher Casey
Wildgen, a native of Goderich.
All minor ball players In the
Crediton, Dashwood, Exeter
areas are. urged to attend.

lead to a single run and had a
runner on first with one out when
the rains came.

each of the second and third
innings to account for their game
scoring.

scored on a single from the bat of
Dave Parsons.
In the Dashwood third, Larry
Clarke led off with a double,
Perry Stover walked and both
scored on another free pass to
Bob Hoffman and sacrifices by
Jim Guenther and Randy
Tieman.
Perry Stover singled to lead off
the fifth and was able to come
around to plate the tying run.
The eventual winning run
crossed the plate in the bottom of
the sixth as John Becker singled,
moved to second on infield out
and home on a two -bagger from
the bat of Perry Stover.
Stover went the distance on the
mound for the Tigers and allowed
Thorndale six hits while recor-
ding eight strikeouts.
The Tigers will be back in
action Friday night at 8 p.m. on
their home field when Arva will
supply the opposition.
Friday's game will create
some extra interest as three
members of the Arva club were
with the Exeter Expos last year
and moved south when the local
club failed to materialize this
spring. They are Terry Bourne,
Brian Baskett and Greg
Revington.
The Dashwood club will be
strengthened considerably by the d
return of John Hayter to the
shortstop position. Hayter was
one of the most valuable mem-
bers of the Stratford senior in- o
tercounty team last year. d
and ('y Blommaert walked to fill
the bases. Ron Bogart -followed

The locals broke the game wide
open in the fifth. Paul McKnight
led the attack with a home run
and Doug Pearson and Randy
Decker added triples. Con-

Bedard and Ron Bogart.
Trailing 10-2 going in the top of
the seventh, the Poplar Hill club
broke loose with four runs off
Exeter starter Ron Mason.
At this point Brian Hodgins
came on in relief. He was greeted
by a double to score two more
runs but he was able to settle
down and retire the next two
batters the last two on strikeouts.
In his six inning stint Ron
Mason struck out three opposing
batters and allowed 12 hits.
Against Bryanston Thursday,
Paul McKnight scored the
«inning run for the Royals in the
bottom of the ninth, the second
extra inning.
McKnight led off with a single
and moved to third on a similar
tut from the bat of Doug Pearson
and scored as the Bryanston
second baseman was unable to
come up with a sharp grounder
hit by Bob George.
The visitors scored three times
in the third inning and the Royals
came hack in the fourth with two
markers. Hon Mason's double
chased Scott Burton and Ray
Lumsden home. The Royals tied
the score in the fifth on Aub
Bedard's single and a double
from Doug Pearson.
Ron Mason again doubled in
the sixth to score Ray Lumsden
and Cy Blommaert to tie the
score and send the game into
extra innings.
Bob George was the winning
pitcher for Exeter going the
