Flower gardens around have brightened considerably with new colour, and a great many trees and shrubs have been planted around the new Craigholme Nursing Horne this week, including a particular four foot weeping peashrub. This "shrub" was a special project and gift of the local C.G.I.T. members in recognition of their national 60th an- niversary. Following an annual church parade at the Ailsa Craig United Church, the girls along with their leaders, Mrs. J. Rosser and Mrs. C. Westhaver, and several members of the congregation went directly to the nursing home. A short ceremony was held in which the tree was planted on the front lawn. C.G.I.T. member, Carol McCallum explained briefly how the weeping peashrub was really a tree, not just a shrub, as the name would imply. It will grow slightly taller each year and produce small flowers each spring. Administrator Nelson Scheifele accepted the gift on behalf of the home and said he hoped the tree would still be standing sixty years from now along with the continuation of the organization, and even longer. Not only new sights, but also new sounds were introduced to the village during the weekend. Chimes were installed in the top of the old silo in the barn at Craigholme, making their location somewhat unique. These are played daily sounding out the hour from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m., except on Sundays when they commence at 9 a.m. A short 16 note composition precedes each striking of the hour. Although electronically operated, they can also be played manually from a keyboard located in the chapel within the nursing home. Congratulations are in order to stock car racer and 1974 Rookie of the Year Award winner, Earl Ross of Ailsa Craig. He won the 50 lap limited late model feature for the Carling O'Keefe Trophy at Delaware International Speedway a week ago Saturday. Earl will race again May 25 in the World 600 at Charlotte, N.C. The 1.O.O.F. members held their annual church parade Sunday evening at Trinity • Anglican Church. with District Deputy Grand Master, Bill Bannister. Four lodges were in attendance including the Ivy Lodge No. 90 and Emerald Rebecca Lodge of Parkhill and Ailsa Craig. Wenesday was an important day in the life of the four and five year olds as some 31 registered for Kindergarten for next year, at the East Williams Memorial Public School. As long as the number is above 29, two classes will be held again next year with children attending on alternate Jays. This year will be the final year teaching for Mrs. Margaret Duncan the present kindergarten teacher, who has won the hearts and respect of so many over the years she has taught in the area. She plans to retire this June. Coming to take her place is Mrs. B. Butler, an experienced teacher also. Senior citizens' euchre The monthly euchre games usually are popular among the senior citizens in the area, and this month was no exception. Eleven tables were completed last Wednesday afternoon. Visitors from the Lucan area were present also. Mrs. O. Dickson took the prize for the ladies' low score, while Mrs. Armstrong succeeded in winning the ladies' high score. Men's low score went to A. Anderson this month, and G. Hotson was the winner of the men's high. Prizes for the lone hands were won by Mrs. Neil for the ladies , and J. Rose for the men. The group has been invited to el' join the residents at the `.••': Craigholme Nursing Home in their new location on May 28 for euchre. weaving is made on home-made equipment. An avid button collector, Mrs. K Rose briefly explained the history of some buttons and the various materials buttons have been made from, metal, stone, bone. rubber. leather, glass and even milk. Young Carol McCallum is interested in making place -mats and demonstrated how these can be made with Phentex yarn. Her mother, Mrs. S. McCallum is a collector of antique glass and china and had a display of items that has been handed down through the family. A replica of the old Ailsa Craig railway station carved from cherry wood was brought by Mrs. F. Ilollands along with older style wagons and pianos. Mary Ann Parkinson and Barbara Rosser each performed piano solos with skill which showed many hours of time had been spent at the keyboard. Scripture was read by Mrs. J. Priestly and Mrs. F. Dickens gave a paper on the Institute motto, - "Spend your hours learning instead of yearning". Mrs. A. Craven gave a report on the District Annual meeting. Mrs. I. McAlpine conducted the business part of the meeting. READY FOR SCHOOL — Shelly Woods, RR 1, Ailsa Craig is all set for the fall kindergarten term at East Williams Memorial school. During the recent registration Shelly said, "we're going to do nice things in school." She is shown with Public Health nurse Margaret Steeper.
