Apples now
year round
Through research and avanced
techniques, the apple industry
has developed a method of
controled atmosphere storage
which makes it possible for you to
have Ontario apples all year
round. These specially designed
storage units virtually halt the
ripening of apples, say food
specialists at the Ontario Food
Council, Min' ry of Agriculture
and Food.
ed atmosphere (CA)
storage holds apples in
"suspended animation', keeping
them as fresh and juicy as the
day they were picked. Normally,
an apple would ripen after
harvest, taking in oxygen and
giving off carbon dioxide. CA
storage combines low tem-
peratures with an atmosphere of
low oxygen and controlled carbon
dioxide. This slows down the
ripening process to such an ex -
lent that the apples in CA storage
virtually hold all the crispness
and flavor they had at harvest.
At this time of year, apples are
pulled from storage as required,
and are ready for your table. So
enjoy an apple today. It's crisp
and juicy, just the way you like it.
Questions new
egg product
The Ontario Egg Producers'
Marketing, Board, in a recent
news release questions if a new
product. Egg Beaters, is really
superior to eggs as the name
implies.
The board says a one pound
package of Egg Beaters costs
well over $1, while a pound of
Grade A large eggs would cost 60
cents per pound.
A whole egg is an excellent
source of _protein, iron, vitamin
A, phosphorus, all fhe B vitamins
and a variety of other nutrients,
say the board. They say Egg
Beaters' label lists the contents
as egg white, corn oil, skim milk
powder, and 10 additives, none of
which are vitamins and minerals.
The release says one must also
question if the cumulative effects
of those additives are good for us,
dispite the fact the amounts of the
additives are controlled by
legislation.
Egg Beaters is being marketed
on the premise that cholesterol is
an undesirable element in the
diel. The Ontario Egg Producers
Marketing Board says there is no
evidence to indicate that the
cholesterol level of the normal
individual will be affected by
eating eggs.
