T -A photo Oust Les Pines Rec crown won by Newby Newby Tire won the Exeter and district Rec hockey league championship Sunday night with a 9-3 win over Les Pines in the fifth and deciding game. Les Pines bounced back Thursday night with a 7-5 victory to force the deciding contest. In each game, the winning team salted the victory away with a good third period scoring effort. With a 5-3 lead heading into the final 20 minutes, Sunday, the Newby Club fired four unanswered goals and wrapped up the championship. Thursday night, Les Pines used the same method, scoring five times without a reply from the opposition in the last 16 minutes of play. Gerry Gadwa's second goal of the third period with three minutes remaining proved to be the winner for Les Pines and Fred Wells fired the puck into the empty Newby net with one second left on the clock. Rick McDonald with three successful shots shared top marksman honours for the winning Les Pines club with Gerry Gadwa. Gary Parsons fired a hat trick for Newby Tire and Bob Jones contributed the other two scores. Four goals in the third period allowed Newby to win the championship Sunday by a handy score. Dale Skinner led the scoring attack with three goals while Gary Parsons and Walt Tiedeman each fired two suc- cessful shots. Scoring in single fashion for the winners were Paul Kerslake and Jack Mayer. Ron Moore with two goals was best for Les Pines and Steve Willert and Bob Rowe scored one goal each. Concerned over lack of baseball interest Exeter recreation director Jim McKinlay said this week there is some concern as to whether or not there will he a minor baseball association this year. A meeting has been set for tonight i Thursday) at 7:30 p.m.at the town hall to determine what interest there is in the program. If there is not enough support to proceed with a baseball program this year. McKinlay said he would attempt to offer an alternative program. such as houseleague softball. A bantam girls' softball team will he organized and entered in the L'sborne league and there is also a possibility of one or two local teams being entered in the Usborne men -'s slow pitch league. If enough interest s generated for slow pitch, a league may be formed in Exeter. RAP members noted that organizing baseball was most difficult, because of summer vacations and other problems that arise. Lack of interest is also ham- pering the ladies' badminton program at the arena. Only two women attended one recent session and it is expected that the program will conclude this week sinless more interest is shown. Commenting on the recent ringette clinic held at the arena, McKinlay said the activity created "a lot of talk" and there is at least one school group planning to introduce the program for girls next winter. Ile advised that the ballet and gymnastics programs had been completed for the season. RAP will face the problem of hiring entirely new staff for these - programs next year as tri,. leaders for the 1974-75 season will all be going to university in the fall. *144 Zee; 04" AM/FM/MULTIPLEX \ STEREO SYSTEM!
