Okay, the natural question is, what is ringette? Ringette is a relatively new winter team sport -for girls and is hoped will fill a great void in winter recreation programming for girls. In order to introduce the game of ringette to the area Exeter's RAP committee is sponsoring a clinic to be held at the Exeter arena on Sunday, April 6 from 12 noon until 3 p.m. Representatives from the Ontario Ringette Association. will be conducting the clinic along with a few players from Waterloo area house league teams. The clinic opens with a classroom session at 12 noon at the Exeter public school library to introduce the game through film and brochures.and look at the basic aims, rules and objectives of the game. The ice demonstration at the arena at 1 p.m. will in- clude two teams in action a chance for everyone to talk to some of the players and coaches. At 2 p.m. it's back to the public school and another classroom session to try and determine whether it would be feasible to introduce the game locally next fall. 11` permits i} will be back to the arena and a chance for area girls to give the game a try. Exeter rec director Jim McKinlay is hoping some of the area schools will be interested enough to consider in- troducing ringette into their physical education curricula for the I975-76 school year. There is no charge for the April 6 clinic. It is a public service program sponsored by RAP and Sport Ontario: , Ringette is similar to hockey in only a few areas. The girls wear skates. of course. and must wear helmets and mouth guards for protection. A straight stick is used to pass carry and shoot the round rubber ring. The rules are designed for safety of the participants and body contact is not allowed and players of certain positions are restricted in the areas of the rink they are allowed to wander into. In order to have a fast moving game forwards cannot enter their own -defensive zone and defence players cannot move up into their offensive zones. The centre can go anywhere. • T, :diow the officials to distinguish between positions defence. players carry red sticks forward sticks are blue ani centre sticks are white. The goalie uses a hockey goal 'stick ':':;e ' dies require each player to participate in each of the tw:i 20 minute periods. More Fitness :1 week ago we talked about the Participaction program in Canada and some of the slogans being used in adver- tising a physical fitness program for Canadians of all ages. Most of us pay more attention to our machines, cars, television sets and dishwashers than we do to the condition -of our own bodies. Regular physical activity is needed to look and feel our hest. That. is man's nature and modern technology can't change i:. Fortunately. it's never too late to reverse our inactive habits No one is too old to begin a program of regular physical activity providing the transition from inactivity to activity is done slowly and with care Anyone can regain much of their former youthful vigor and zest for life and become more fit.r'he first step is to un- derstand what fitness is all about. Beipg fit means being able to carry out daily tasks with vigor and alertness without undue fatigue and with ample energy to enjoy leisure time pursuits and meet unforeseen emergencies. Physical -fitness may be thought of as the trunk of a tree that supports the many branches representing all the ac- tivities that make life worth living such as intellectual life, occupation, love life and social activities. If we allow the trunk of this tree to become weak and unfit all the rest of. the tree suffers as well. While experts do not agree on all the components of physical fitness there are four which appear to be basic and most important. Muscle strength and endurance. stamina, flexibility and co-ordination appear to be the most important in- gredients of physical fitness. Muscles are important. Man's existence and effec- tiveness depends upon his muscles. All movements of the body or any of its parts are impossible without action by some of the over 600 muscles attached to the skeleton.
