Hanging basket
a good bet
Evet,, in the smallest apartment
there is usually a well -lighted
corner that could hold a hanging
basket filled with plants.
Foliage plants, vegetables, and
herbs as well as flowers can be
grown in hanging baskets, say
Ontario Ministry of Agriculture
and Food horticulturist, R. A.
Fleming. "Given the same care
as that required by most
houseplants, those in a hanging
basket can add a lively touch of
color to sunrooms, kitchens and
living rooms."
Many garden centers now stock
a wide variety of ready -planted
hanging baskets. as well as con-
tainers, soil, fertilizer and plants
suitable for baskets. While the
range of such plants is wide, the
gardener should not choose those -
that will be too large for their
setting at maturity. The
Columnea, Asparagus Fern,
Boston Fern, Spider Plant and
any tradescantia are among the
easy -to -grow plants, while the
Episcias, the Scindapsus, the
trailing Geranium and the
Aphrodite Rieger Begonia need a
little more care.
Edible plants that growwellin
hanging baskets include several
varieties of lettuce, " spinach,
parsley and strawberries.
"Hanging baskets are best
kept in a moderately warm,
bright, airy location," says Mr.
Fleming. "Hung to one side of a
_bright window, they usally
thrive."
When planting hanging
baskets, keep the soil mixture
loose. Provide the plants with a
houseplant slow-release fer-
tilizer, according to package
instructions. and use houseplants
pesticides if'' needed." Hanging
baskets on patios, or at other
outdoor locations, may dry out
more quickly than houseplants
and should be watered more
frequently.

and functional wear.
According to Ron Cottrell of
The Junction, there is a trend to
this year's styles. The Junction
supplied all of the clothing at the
show.
The trend,he said. is to longer
lengths in skirts and dresses.
These were both in evidence at
the showing. Mr. Cottrell also said
the longer lengths seem to be
quite popular.

said. is to the wearing of hoods.
He said it also seemed to be quite
popular this year.
Colours too will be slightly
different for 1975. Pastels will
still be popular, along with dusty
shades in pink, blue and green.
Denim is still fairly strong in
fashions, said Mr. Cottrell. At the

Beef best buy?
A good quantity of ground beef
is featured at attractive prices in
supermarkets these days. Asked
whether or not this beef is a good
buy. or if it is cheaper because it
is "all fat", food specialists at the
Ontario Food Council. Ministry of
Agriculture and Food assure that
it cannot contain more fat than it
did before.
According to regulations ad-
ministered by the Department of
Consumer and Corporate Affairs.
fat levels in ground beef are set at
the 30 percent and 15 percent
marks, so that ground beef of any
type (be it called hamburger,
ground chuck. or ground round)
should not consist of more than 30
percent fat. 1f it is specified on
the label as "lean" ground beef,
it must not contain more than 15
percent fat.
Therefore, ground chuck. and
ground round could legally
contain any amount of fat up to 30
percent unless the word "lean"
appears, in which case it cannot
exceed 15 percent.

Children's wear is almost as
fashionable as adult wear, said
Mr. Cottrell. He said they have
the same colours, and generally
the same style.
Lots of evening dresses and
gowns were on display at the
fashion show, along with the
always popular co-ordinates.
Mr. Cottrell said that everyone
seemed well pleased with the
whole thing. It is hoped the
Carousel of Colour will become
an annual event.
Proceeds from this year's show
went to the Exeter Brownies and
Guides.
