Hodgins Midgets, bantams win Irish reach second round By MIKE WRAITH Sunday in Lucan before a crowd of over 400, Lucan defeated Mitchell 9-6 and won the • right to play Belmont in the semi- finals_ Early in the game Lucan looked like they would walk away with it when they built up a 4-1 lead but the two teams were tied 6-6 after two periods of play. Three unanswered goals in the third gave Lucan the victory. Craig Corman led the Irish with a Tuesday night in Mitchell the' Mitchell Hawks defeated the Irish by an 8-3 score. Lucan led 2- 0 but soon found themselves behind when the Hawks began to outskate them.raig Corman, Ed Robb and Randy Kraul scored for Lucan. Wednesday in Lucan the Irish played perhaps their best game of the season when they defeated the Hawks 6-0 behind) the goaltending of Kevin Lightfoot. The win put the Irish into a commanding 3-1 lead in the best four out of seven series. Ron Funston, Dave Smith, Craig Corman, Ed Robb, Jim Maguire and Mike McIntyre scored for Lucan while Kevin Lightfoot recorded his first shutout in his Junior D career. 4ueau ileatigedd Mrs. Jack Garrett and children Jason and Kathy of London were Friday guests of Mrs. Bob Coleman. - Mr. & Mrs. Cliff Abbott and Mr. & Mrs. Ivan Needham were Thursday guests of Mr. & Mrs. Heber Davis. Archdeacon Foreman, for-/ merly of Lucan who recently underwent surgery in West- minster Hospital, was able to take charge of the Communion 'Service at. the McCotrpnigk Home Monday. A large attendance was present to welcome the Arch- deacon back. Mr. & Mrs. Cliff Culbert have recently returned from four weeks holidays. They spent three weeks visiting Gladys' mother and her brother and his family who live north of Tampa, Florida. They went to Jamaica for the final week and enjoyed touring the banana, pineapple and coconut plantations. Mr. Si Mrs. William Fischer, Catherine. Cheryl and Chris of Komoka, visited with Catherine Fischer on Sunday. Lynn Melanson has returned to Toronto after spending three weeks with her family. Mr. & Mrs. Ed Melanson. Mr. & Mrs. Milton Berger of Seaforth, visited on Saturday with Mr. & Mrs. Harold Prince and on Sunday Mr. & Mrs. Ted Kostecki called to celebrate her mother's birthday but were sorry to find her in ill health. Eileen Currie reported seeing four robins on their lawn on Sunday. David Cummings and Bradley Herdsman of Toronto. stayed Saturday and Sunday with Mr. & Mrs. Bernard Avery. Dave Snith, Gary Herr, Jim Maguire, Brian McNeil and Randy Kraut added singles. • Midget In the first game of their second round (7.M.H.A. playoff against West Lorne, Lucan midgets shutout the home team 5- 0. Jim Benn led Lucan with two goals and three assists while Gord Moon added two and Russell Dann, one. Lennie Anderson recorded the shutout while West Lorne was assessed 15 of 29 penalties. Bantam The Lucan bantams also defeated West Lorne in their first game in the second round playoffs by a 7-4 score. Lucan led 3-0 after one period of play with Martin Clarke scoring twice and Calvin McCallum once. However, in the second period West Lorne scored three times and the two teams were tied going into the third. Goals by Ron Glenn, Kyle Pederson, Calvin McCallum and Martin Clarke gave Lucan the' victory. Saturday night in exhibition play St. Marys edged Lucan 4-3 in a game played in St. Marys. Martin Clarke, Calvin McCallum and Dean Densmore scored for Lucan. Atom In the Lucan atom tournament Lucan was defeated 2-0 in the first round by Thedford. Despite the loss Lucan goaltender Tim Culbert was named the most Elect officers for arena board At the regular monthly meeting of the Arena board held at the Memorial Centre on February 20, the new slate of officers were appointed for 1975: Chairman Gerry VanBussel; vice-chairman Larry Hotson; treasurer Murray Hodgins; secretary Marshall Webster. Representing the board from Biddulph township is Gerry VanBussel, McGillivray town- ship, Ken Carter; London township, Fred Lewis; Lucan, Doug Johnston and the Lucan village council appointees are Larry Hotson and Gary McFalls. The Lucan Lions were given approval to rent the grounds for the Lucan Fair and their Cen- tennial Plus 4 Dance. The board expressed their thanks by letter to the Lucan Jr. Farmers for their S2,000 donation to be used for the improvement of the tennis courts at the arena grounds. The board received a letter of resignation from Keith Dickson, last years Lucan representative to the board. A letter of ap- preciation was sent to Keith and it will now be necessary for Lucan to appoint one new member. Gerry VanBussel and Fred Lewis, on behalf of the board; thanked Harry Wraith, the retiring arena board chairman, for his past seven years service. Sunday in Exeter, Lucan won by a 2-1 score to take the first game in their Shamrock League play-offs. Exeter scored first only to have Steven Glenn reply with two goals, one in the 2nd and one in the 3rd period. Pee -wee In the first game of their Shamrock League play-offs on Sunday, Lucan pee wees shutout Exeter by a 2-0 score. Brad DeGraw and Ken McManus - scored for Lucan while Mark Grove picked up the shutout. Juvenile Saturday night in the third game of their best three out'of five O.M.H.A. series, Dorchester defeated Lucan by a 4-2 score to win their first game. Pat Holland and Jim Benn were the Lucan marksmen. Girls The Lucan girls lost a close game to Huron Park on Saturday when they were defeated 1-0. Carnival at Biddulph The Carnival of Quebec was held on Thursday morning at the Biddulph School for Grade 7 and 8 French classes with Ann Garrett representing Bonhomme. The snowball accuracy throw was won by Diane Cook and the winners of the toboggan relay were Terry VanArenthols, John Arenthols, Carl Jones, Don Porter, Michele Dolan, Pat Dolan, Mike Rae, Gerrie DeVries, Marjorie Dykeman and Brenda Dykeman. The masculine Beauty Contest winner was Fenno DeVries and the costume contest was won by Wendy Hearn. After parading around for the Junior rooms the revellers were served hot chocolate by their French teachers, Susan Szaszi and Veronica Zaveral. The skating party for Biddulph school which was cancelled due tostormyweather,will be held on February 28. 'Visitors attend seniors group The Sunshine Club held their regular meeting on Thursday February 20 with 37 members and four visitors, Mr. & Mrs. Armstrong and Mr. & Miss Stephenson of Ailsa Craig, in attendance. After a short business meeting the Sunshine group played bingo which was convened by Laura Toohey and- Cec Robb while the Busy Bodies continued working on their hooked rugs. Two new members, Mrs. Charles Cronyn and Mrs. Joseph Conlin, were welcomed into the group. Mrs. Violet Hardy favoured all members with two amusing readings "Nothing Wrong With Fat" and "A Diet Menu." Lunch was provided by Mrs. Don Allen, Mrs. Violet Hardy and Gordon Hotson. Campaign meeting for Cancer Society A campaign meeting for the executive and representatives of the Biddulph-Lucan branch of the Canadian Cancer Society will be held on Wednesday March 5 at 8:30 p.m. promptly in the Parish Hall of Holy Trinity Anglican Church. All members are requested to be present to plan the "kick-off" party and stuff the envelopes. T -A photo Two youths killed in crash, family escapes train accident Two Ilderton area cousins were killed early Saturday morning when the car they were passengers in failed to negotiate a curve on County Road 13, just west of Lucan. Killed instantly were Michael Paul Moir and Daniel Victor Voir, both of RR 3 Ilderton and both were 20 years of age._ The driver of the car was Robert Moir, of the same Ilderton address. The Moir vehicle broke off two hydro poles and over- turned. Robert Moir is in fair condition in a London hospital. The Lucan Ambulance Service and Hoffman's Ambulance of Dashwood were used during the accident. The attending coroner was Dr. R. Shearer, London. Constable N. A. Campbell of the Lucan Ontario Provincial Police detachment investigated and set damages to the Moir vehicle at $1,800. A Biddulph township mother and two' children escaped serious DALEY'S WEEKLY COMMENTS An invasion By SID DALEY The,Atom invasion is over for this year and of course we are referring to the second annual Lucan Leprechaun atom hockey tournament hosted by Branch 540 of the Royal Canadian Legion. There were 27 hockey teams entered, a total of 403 young hockey players 10 years of age and under plus 65 adults who came as managers, coaches and trainers and in addition the many mums and dads and fans who follow their team. It was' just a really great show. Byron won the 'B' title edging Cedar Hill 3-2 in overtime. Dresden won the 'C' crown and Parkhill took 'D' honors over Blyth. Cedar Hill team was the winner of the trophy presented for the most gentlemanly team both on and off the ice. Timmy Culbert. Lucan received the trophy for being judged the best goalie in the tournament. The president and members of Branch 540 would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone and anyone who helped in anyway in the preparation of and during the tournament. Without the cooperation of all you such a tournament could not be a reality. A very special thanks to all those who opened their homes to billet these youngsters and a tip of our berets to Donna and Jim Freeman who made it all possible. And here we go again. Plans are already being formulated for the third annual atom hockey tournament for 1976, which we hope will be even better than the 1975 version, if that's possible. Here's a couple of dates worth marking on your calendar. Saturday March 8 'Parents without Partners' from Brant- ford will be the guests of Branch 540 at a dance, the music will he supplied by that every popular Tony Nothers. Make it a point to come on over to the Branch and show our visitors what warm and hospitable comradeship Branch 540 really has to offer. Then on Saturday, March 15 we will be holding a celebration such as niver befor' has been seen and tis no wonder for we will be ob- servin' the birth date of our patron Saint none other than St Patrick himself. Mrs. Van Bussell and son Frank and daughter Lisa were taken to University hospital, London by Lucan Ambulance Service but their injuries were not serious. Constable N: A. Campbell set damages at $1,800. The same day on Ann street in Granton, a vehicle driven by Randy McRobert strucka parked • vehicle owned by Gordon Strickland, RR 3 Granton. Constable W. R. Disher set damages at $300. Tuesday at 5.50 p.m. vehicles driven by Emerson Degraw, Lucan and Lloyd Garland, RR 5 Clinton, were in collision on High- way. 4 at the Clandeboye curve. Constable B. D. Munro estimated damages at S1,600. Two accidents occurred Wednesday morning within 20 minutes of each other in the same area on Highway 4, just south of the Brinsley road. At 7.25 a.m. a vehicle driven by David Hughes, London was damaged to the extent of $500 when it left the highway and struck a tree. Constable G. N. 1,t'ilcox investigated. John Holland, Lucan suffered lacerations in the second mishap when his vehicle also left the roadway and struck a tree. Constable James Craig listed damages at $1,000. Wednesday at 2 p.m. a vehicle driven by Judith Rankin, RR 7 St. Marys, left Highway 7, near Concession 4 in West Nissouri township.
