Exeter Hawks coach Tgrry Bourne seems to have found the right method in getting his group of juniors ready to roll. The. Hawks off to a very slow start in OHA Western Junior "D" play started to roll about four weeks ago and have now gone 12 straight games without suffering a loss. This streak includes 11 victories and one draw. The schedule is rapidly drawing to a close and it appears as if the Hawks will finish in at least fourth place and probably higher. The Hawks are at home Friday night to Port Stanley and then meet Seaforth and the league leading Belmont Green Giants. Manager Fred Mommersteeg tells us the enthusiasm and spirit on the club is excellent as the boys are raring to get their turn on the ice to get going. • Goalie Randy Lovie has been one of the main reasons. the Hawks have been so successful in the past month. His puck stopping has been steady and at times sensational. Lovie came up with a shutout in one victory over Seaforth and this is quite an accomplishment in junior "D" ranks. In Mitchell last Tuesday he was less than two minutes away from another blanking. About a rec complex About a year ago we were fortunate enough to be able to enjoy a tour of the fairly new sports complex at Tillson- burg. At that time a similar recreation complex for Exeter and district was only wishful thought or a dream. It may still be a dream but at least a lot of research and talking is going on locally. We attended the latest meting when the main topic of discussion was the location of a site for a complex if it ever does become a reality. Whether one likes to think about it or not. new facilities of some kind will probably be here a lot soonerthan some may wish to think. The condition of the arena is the main concern of those "in the know." The arena building was built back in 1935 and the ice plant and original pipes under the floor were installed in 1952. The local arena was one of four of its kind built about the same time and is the only one still in operation. The Ontario Ministry of Labour is again asking for a safety study on the arena. A previous study of about three years ago suggested that renovations to the roof and struc- ture could cost as much as $30,000. Apparently the Department of Labour is again asking for an engineer's report on the condition of the arena. At the latest complex meeting rec director Jim McKinlay suggested it was quite possible the Safety branch could at the end of the current season say that repairs must be made or the arena would be closed. 1.1. sufficient repairs are not made it is a distinct possibility closure could occur. It has happened in other are where buildings are not as old as the one here. The last meeting of the local recreation complex meeting attracted delegations from the saddle club. rodeo club and the Exeter Fair Board in response to suggestions of moving some of the present facilities of these groups. The saddle group suggested building an arena to the east and nor('h of the present fair grounds property and use the arena as a show place for various events. Bruce Shapton, president of the Fair Board said his group could not afford to lose any ground or buildings in any change. It has also been suggested to move or eliminate the present half mile harness racing track. At the end of the meeting chairman. John Stephens commented it appears as if we need to get more facts on the subject." The next meeting to discuss possible sites along with receiving information on the grant structure will be held at the Exeter Public School library on Tuesday February 18 at Bpm Get your tickets This will be the last chance we have to plug the upcoming Exeter Lions Sportsmen's Dinner. It takes place next Tuesday night and brings a tremendous array of spor- ting celetfrities to our town. The first dinner of its kind in 1974 with all proceeds go- ing to aid crippled kids not only in this area but throughout Ontario was a great success and all prospects for Tuesday are bigger and better than ever. The main speaker is Jack Donohue coach of Canada's National basketball team and he will be joined by a good number of other top notch guests. Crippled kids best friend Whipper Bill Watson will also be here along with London's Timmy. Danny Alton. A few tickets are left, so. move quickly and contact arty member of the Exeter Lions Club. All proceeds from the $25 a plate dinner go to help crippled children. Receipts for in- come tax purposes may be obtained. While on the subject of events to aid crippled children. the Pineridge Chalet will be holding their annual winter weekend on February 15 and 16. We know that Shirley and Don Mousseau and Lucille and George Beer and company will again come up with an interesting program to draw large crowds. This will be the sixth annual Crippled Kids weekend. The last couple of years Chalet officials have been able to pass on about $3,000 each year to the worthy cause. Swedes in the area A midget hockey team from Sweden will be appearing on a six game tour of Ontario in the next couple of weeks and will be making two stops in this part of Western Ontario. The team is from Ornskoldsvik, Sweden and will be meeting the London Major Midgets at the London Gardens on Saturday February 1 at 7:30 p.m. The Swedish team will be arriving in London the day before and will be guests at a London Knights - Hamilton junior game Friday night. • After the game in London. the Swedish team moves on to Stratford for a Sunday afternoon game. Another exhibition Tuesday, February 4. an all-star team of the London recreation league will meet the London Kings at the Oakridge arena at 9 p.m. The manager of the all-stars will be Vic Futcher, formerly of Exeter. Victories in a home and home series over the weekend with the Tavistock Braves enables the Hawks to keep their unbeaten string intact. Friday night at the Exeter arena. the locals scored an easy 9-2 decision but back in Tavistock Saturday night it was a different story with the Braves scoring in the last two minutes of play to cut the Exeter margin to a single goal. Annual Minor Hockey Day in Exeter Saturday was an ex- tremely successful event with more than 450 spectators in attendance throughout the more than 13 hour program. A total of 12 games were on tap for the good crowds with every member of the local minor Ivockey program getting a chance to participate in at least one game. The feature game of the day proved to be an exhibition game between the novice aged Waxers and their mothers. The game provided plenty of laughs and a good change of pace from regular puck chasing. The official outcome of the garne read 3-2 for the Waxers but the score was not important as humorous incidents took place. The town of Exeter was well represented with mayor Bruce Shaw handling the duties of referee -in -chief. He was ably assisted by reeve Derry Boyle and councilwoman Lossy Fuller. The game was held up for a minute or two by the tardy of- ficials. They finally made an en- trance with Shaw pushing a chair carrying Fuller. The mayor didn't trust completely to his skating abilities as he carried some insurance in case of a fall. Shaw hit the ice with a pillow tied to his posterior and a helmet for head protection. The officials actually ruled with an iron hand. The Waxers were handed a bench penalty when one of the referees with the benefit of a strong west wind caught coach Bill Batten smok- ing from the bench area.. Referee Fuller mistook the arena for a rodeo ring and tied Waxer goalie Rick Gilfillan to the goal posts with a stout rope. Despite this handicap for a couple of minutes Gilfillan was able to keep the mothers from scoring. Darren Vandergunst was the top goal scorer with two successful shots against Grace Gilfillan and Kathy Whiteford in the nets for the Big llamas. The other goal came from the stick of. John ,Wells on a three-way effort with Jeff Pfaff and George Pratt: The Big Mamas held their vaunted scoring power until the last few minutes. Mary "Pro" Fisher counted on a pass from Kaaren "Crafty" Batten and Shirley "Shifty" Pratt .registered with help from the "Blonde Brunette Jet" Agnes Vandergunst. The Waxers proved to be real "little gentlemen" as they presented each of their mothers with a carnation at the end of the game. The big day started at 9 a.m. with the Grand Bend atoms scor- ing a 5-0 win over the Exeter house league atoms. Dean Courtney was the top scorer for Grand Bend with four successful shots.
