Sports Spotlight
by Wayne Proctor
Nicknames have always been a pan of sports. •
Each sport has had its own colorful array of nicknames.
Baseball has had some of the most colorful nicknames. Remeinher
Mark "The Bird" Fidryc h, Jon "The Yankee -Clipper". Dirnaggio, Lou
Gehrig -"The Pride of_ the Yankees"; George Herman ”Babe" Ruth
"The Sultan of Swat"'! How many people rcaliic.Sparky Anderson's
real first name is Gcorgc? My,personal favorite is Dennis "Oil'Can"
Boyd.
Basketball players have had sonic good nicknames as well. Proba-
bly the best known are; Wilt "The Stilt" Chamberlain, Julius "Dr J"
Irving, Ervin 'Magic" Johnson and when Ralph. Sampson and
Akeem .Alajewon ivere tcammatcs on the Houston Rockets they
were known as the "Twin Towers."
Wrestlers .without nicknames are an absolute nobody. -Just ask
"Hulk" Hogan; Randy "Macho Man". -Savage or Jake "Thc
Snake"Roberts, just to mention a few.
1. think .each team has nicknames for all their players and the Ezct-
er Mohawks are no different. Flipping through their program I found
they have some very original ones. And 1 thought it would be inter-
esting to find out from them 'bow they got their handles.
Naturally some are logical. Al Gates is known as "Gazer." Ron
Goodhand's nickname is "Goody." Dave Randerson is known' as
"Rando", Quincy Wilkcr is called "Quince", Wayne Urhshott's nick-
name is "17Tbby",'John Kernick's is "Kernel", Rick Pikul is called
"Pick" and Jeff Shipley is known as "Ship". . •
But some have a little more behind it than that-Some:were given
thc nickname as .a kid and some_ don't even know how they got
their's, but it just scented to stick with them over:the years.
Mark Sochner was given the nickname "Sparky" by his father
when he was five years old and he is not really sure why. Now he
would like to attribute to the fact that .he is a spark plug for his
team on the ice.
Jeff McClcnaghan was given the nickname "Glenner",hy.his Jun-
ior teammates in St. Marys because they didn't know who to pro-
nounce his. last name and found "Clenner" easier.' .
McClcnaghan was also called -"Rambo" by his -juvenile team be-
cause of the way he hit on the ice and the way he dressed:
Jeff Warren has teammate Jeff Shipley to thank for his nickname
of "Moose".
"Jeff Shipley gave it to me when we were teammates in St. Marys
because I was bigger than most other players when I was just- f('i,"
said "Moose", l mean Warren.
.Joe Scherer picked up the nickname of "Duguay"(luring-bis first
year of senior hockey in New Hamburg.
"During practice with New :1 lamburg I never used to wear a.helmet -
and I had longer hair than I do now and when 1 skated. around it
flowed. a lot like Ron Duguay's and that just stuck with me," said-
Schcrcr:
Bill Gloqr has this paper to thank for his nickname: '
"When i was playing Junior for the 1lawks :t few years back some-
how Glover got misprinted as Slava in the T A and my friends
thought that was.kind of funny so they stuck me with it," said Glo-
ver. •
One of the most intriguing nicknames I found was'Ron. Elliot's
nickname of "Proctor". Lwas dying to find out how_he got the same
nicknan a as reporter's real name.
"I used- to'hang out in a pool hall in Mitchell when 1 was about
15 or -16 years old and i think the owner of the pool hall wasnamed
Proctor and since I spent so much time there I guess they felt I was
likc.a son to him; "Elliot explained. •
- • Dale Timmermans is another player who picked up• his nickname
during his Junior, playing days. 11c was given the nickname of
"Howie" by his first year Junior coach when he was playing in the
Mitchell Arerrt, which has the monument of Howie Morenz in it
and-Timmcrmans took a few toomany penalties one period and be-
tween periods his coached asked him "who do you think you arc,
Howie Morenz?". •
Thc Mohawks name derived from a 1950's Intermediate team of
the same name. That team folded in 1959 and was started again back
in the 1970's and continued until the early 1980's. Thc name was re-
tired again for one season when the present users of the name asked
the manager of the 1950's team if they coukj use it. -
Thc`Junior D Hawks and Oldtrmcr Molting Hawks had their name
derived from the 1950's Mohawk team as well.
Thc only Mohawk player who was'unavailable for comment on
his nickname was Kris '=Puppy" Bedard.
Thc only player who said he doesn't have a nickname was Tim
Adam. Anybody with any suggestions as to a nickname for Adair,.
feel free to let me or anyone on the team know and maybe we can
start a Tim Adair nickname contest.
