The. Irish edged the Tavistock Braves last Wednesday night in Lu- can and Friday night they beat the Exeter Hawks 6-4 at the South Hu- ron Ree; Centre. Friday's victory was the 10th in a row for the Irish, who -have not Lost since November 23, when they were beaten by Exctcr home. After Friday's win, Irish coach Dave Revington said, "those Exeter kids really hustled out there and we weren't quite as sharp as we have been in the past. I also thought that they we more aggressive than - us -but we have the firepower to overcome a had night". The Irish took a 3-1 lead into the second period and a 5-2lcad into the third but - the young Hawks hung tough and never gave up against their more -experienced op- ponents. Jcff Iiirtzell opened the scoring. for the Irish, with help front Jamie Pcarcc, who had four assists that night, and Davc Murray, at 4:48 of •the.first. - After Derck Shackleton tied the game for Exctcr at 7:26, Lucan took the lead for good on Brad, Muir's first of two goals,- from Pcarcc and goalie Brad Judd, while shorthanded at j 2:56 of the first. Muir increased the lead to two goals when he connected from Joc Febrcy and Scott Dcnomy, at 17:40. Febrcy scored to make- it a_44 --- game, from Pcarcc, at 4:29 of the second, while on a power play. Dieter got one back two minutes later, but Paul Barnes restored Lu - can's three -goal advantage with a marker at 18:41 of the second, from Pearce., Exeter's Din Lewis scored a pow- er -play goal at 19 seconds into the third period; but, Pearce answered for Lucan with a power -play goal of his own, from Barnes and Glen Marshall, less than two minutes later. Brian Quinn got a gift goal for Exctcr at 4:15 of the third, when Judd misplayed the puck on a clear- ing play and gave it right to Quinn, who deposited it into the empty net, but Exeter couldn't come any closer and they had only five shots on Judd in the final peri- od. Fcbrcy and Barnes did most of the damage for the Irish against Ta- bistock, picking up six and five points respectively. Febrey had two goals and four as- sists, while Barnes racked up three goals and two assists. Tim Hayter, Marshall and Dave Hinge picked up single goals for the Irish. The next game for the Itish is Friday night when the Exctcr Hawks are at the Lucan Arcna for an 8:15 contest. It will also be Mi- nor Hockey Night at the Arena. Mohawks sputter, still beat Royals EXETER - The Exctcr Mohawks didn't play their best -game of the season Tuesday night at the South Huron Rec .Centre, but still man- aged to beat the Tavistock Royals 6-4, in. their only clash of the week. "We were really slow getting' started," said Mohawk coach G9rd Brooks. "1 think the eight day.1` off really hur' us because we came out sluggish, but luckily we still man- aged to win. "They (Tavistock) didn't stop working all night and played us tight but we stopped -playing the body and it almost cost us," said Brooks. Thc victory was a costly one to the Mohawks however. Leading scorer Dave Randerson will likely be handed a four -game suspension after of a butt -ending incident with Tavistock player early in the sec- ond period. Also, Ron Elliot will .definitely miss one -game because he was involved in a fight while another fight was happening on the icc at the same time. -That infrac- tion carries an automatic one -game suspension. The Mohawks rallied from a 2-1 deficit after the first period and managed to catch the Royals at 3-3 heading into the final period. The Mohawks took control. in the third :with three goals, while Tavistock only scored once in that period: After Tavistock took a quick 1-0 , lead just 36 seconds into the con- test, Kris Bedard managed to tie it. at 1:48, from Jeff McClenaghan and Bi}) Glover: - Tavistock took a 2-1 Icad into the intermission with a goal at 14:28 of the period. Tavistock took a 3-1 lead with an early second -period goal, but it was thcty that the Mohawks started fightingback. At 1:20 Ron Ggodhand scored from Glover and Bedard and Joe Scherer, .with his first of three of the night, tied the contest, from ,Quincy Wilkcr and Barry Baynham, at 18:34 of the second. Scherer gave the Mohawks a 4-3 lead with an unassisted goal at 2:42 of the third, but Tavistock tied the game again just 22 seconds later. But Exctcr took the lead for good exactly one minute later when John Kcrnick completed a three-way Epassing play between himself, Ron lliot and Wayne Urbshott. - Scherer completed his hat trick with an unassisted, empty -net goal with 28 seconds left to play. Hawks have Mitchell's number MITCHELL - The.Exctcr Hawks' domination of the Mitchell Hawks this season continued on Monday with a 6-3 win in Mitchell. In the four gains the teams have played this season, the locals have beaten their namesakes three tunes and drawn one game. If it were not for the Exeter Hawks, the Mitchell Hawks, who arc currently in a battle for second place with two - other teams, could be comfortably in second place. . • On Friday ;night, Exeter hung tough with Lucan for two periods at 'thc South Huron Ree Centre, but. eventually dropped the contest 6-4 to the leaguc-lcading Irish. • The tlawks began their week last Week by beating Wellesley Apple Jacks 7-5 in Wellesley, in a make- up game. .. Trying to explain his te:uns' dom- ination over Mitchell this year after Monday's game Hawk coach Jack Nairn said, "I really don't know what it is. but today they took •a lot of silly penalties and we capitalized by getting three or tour power -play goals .which .really helped, but -i think the big difference is we have been getting - super goaltending -against them, especially today from Todd Campbell." Campbell's glove band made the difference for the Hawks on N'hn day. Mitchell outshot Exeter 44-28 over 60 minutes and several times in the third period Campbell robbed Mitchell shooters try'ing.to score. Mitchell led 1-0 after the first per- iod, but Exeter came out flying in the second, scoring four trines, three. on power plays and one came while shorthanded. Shackleton connected for an unassisted shorthanded •goal ith just 51 seconds left- in the second. That goal seemed to break Mitch- ell's back as they had been trying to gel back into the. contest. As so often happens in hockey, when one team comes very close to scoring a goal the other team comes right down the ice and 'docs. just that. That was the case Sunday. With 8:50 gone in the third, Shackleton's bullet -like slapshot. went careening off the goal post, -Mitchell picked up the puck and. skated the full length of the ice and beat Campbell just 10 seconds later. it looked like it was going to be an exciting fin- ish, But with 4:44 Icft, Cousincau put an end to that idea when he grabbed Shaekleton's slapshot - that -was- floating-over the net dropped the puck in front of the wide open net and scored. Jim Dickins.also picked up an assist on thc team's fourth power -play tally of the day. Dickins -made it a thfcc-goal game when he scored a goal with 2:34 left, front Quinn and Shackleton. Mitchell. couldn't mount any late - comcback. LUCAN 6 EXE"1'1:R 4 - Lucan tried -to put Exeter away several limes in- this contest but couldn't do it.
