By Roberta Walker
• GRAND BEND - The Church of
God morning worship commenced
with the lighting of the fourth Ad-
vent Candle. George Winegarden led
thc hymns. The responsive reading
was -taken from several Scriptures
centering on God's love, and what it
means to us.
Millie Desjardine's solo was titled
"I Am Loved". Jennie Bumstead
played an offertory solo "O Holy
Night" as the congregation•present-
ed their regular offerings as well as
a special Christ Birthday offering
for the missions. Pat Desjardine
gave a reading "Lord, Was It Really,
You?"
Pastor Stan Desjardine's message
was centered around the verse John
3:16. God'gave the gift of His only
Son to us because of His great love
for us. No one need perish, as God
offers eternal life to those.who ac-
cept His Son.
Thc Sunday School Christmas
program served as the evening ser-
vice. All the classes, had recitations,
with the Youth I class performing a
short skit. Thc children sang several
numbers, led by Millie Desjardine.
A frit s shown about a boy
named Bennie.V. ifts were distribut-
ed to the children, and afterwards re-
freshments were enjoyed in the
church basement.
Thc Church of God extends an in-
vitation to everyone to join them in
Christmas worship at 10:30 a.m.
on Sunday. There will be a Ncw
Year's.. Evc watchnight service on
December 31 at 8:30 p.m.
United Church
Last Sunday morning at the.
Grand Bend United Church, -Rev.
Teddy Smits took his sermon text
from..Matthew 1:23, "They Shall
Call His Name Emmanuel", which
means "God with us". Portions of
scripture from Isaiah, Micah, Mat
thew, and Luke were read by Dianne
Rice, alternating with Christmas •
carols sung by the congregation.
The children's story, . by Rev.
mils was about a little girl named
Gretchen, who lived with her grand-
mother in Holland.
She was hoping for a doll for
Christmas, and set out her wooden
shoe on ttic windowsill. On Christ-
mas morning, instead of a doll, she
found a wounded .chickadee. They
bandaged the little -bird, and Gretch-
en thought it was the best Christ-
mas ever, because God gave her a
little bird to care for. -

Catholic Church
• Father Paul Beck, pastor of Im= 'f
maculate_ Heart of Mary Church, l;
opened the weekend Masses with
the lighting of -the Fourth Advent 6
Candle on the Advent Wreath. Rose
VanBruaene was reader at the 11 t
a.m. Mass, joined by her husband $
Jerry Vanbruaene as Eucharistic $
Ministers. Choir director Delores
Tighe was the cantor and Paul Die -
'trich wasorganist.
. In his sermon, Father Beck stated
that the, Bible is• a record of God's
. surprising dealings with Mankind.
It is surprising that God is still in-
terested in mankind, after all we
have done, yet in the person of Jc-
_sus Christ, God literally stepped
into human affairs,-to.savc us from
ourselves. The -deepest sense of
Christmas is that God still loves us
- the gift of Jesus still happens to-
day.
The second Candle Light Service
will be held on Wednesday, Decem-
ber 21, at 7;15 p.m. and .after the
-service will be an opportunity for
confessions as well as on Saturday,
December 24 between 11 a.m. and
noon. The Christmas Eve Scrvicc
begins wial.carols at 6:45.p.m. and
Mass at 7:15 p.m. Christmas Day
Masses arc at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.
The sympathy of the community
is extended to the family of Mrs.
Rebecca Marie (Thompson) Najdri-.
who'liwas buried from this'

Ecumenical
By Roberta Walker
GRAND BEND - The ladies of
thc Grand Bcnd Church of God
hosted. a Christmas Ecumenical
service on December 12. Millie
Desjardine ad Lucille Vincent led
the service, and music was provid-
ed by. by Michelle Vincent on the
piano. Other churches were asked
to contribute to the program.
Roberta Walker, representing the
Catholic ladies of Immaculate
Heart of Mary Church, performed
three solos, "Lo, How a Rose E're
Blooming," "Shepherds, Shake off
your Drowsy Sleep:" and "When
Blossoms Flowered Mist the
Snow." She was accompanied by
the Catholic church organist, Paul
Dittrich. -
Several other churches participat-
ed in scriptural readings of. the
Christmas story, with the congre-
gation joining together in carols.
Mrs. Laura Flewelling represented
the United Church from Grand
Bcnd; Mrs. Eloise Eagleson was
from Greenway United; and Mrs.
Ruth Macintosh read for St. John's
Anglican joined by the ladies from
the Church of God. -
Aftcr the carol service, Jennifer
Gielnik of Dashwood United sang
two solos, "My Treasure" to taped
music, and "Away in a Manger"
with Michelle Vincent.
An offering was collected for the
Beach Ministry to young people in
the summer at Grand Bend, total-
ing $108.75 to support this mis-
sion work.
Pat Desjardine introduced the
speaker. Mrs. Doris Sinasac, wife
of Rev. Sinasac of the Dashwood
United Church. She chose the top-
ic "Peace", defined as a state of
calm and quiet; a state of reconcili-
ation after strife or enmity.
Jesus was born into a world of
turmoil and oppression under Ro-
man rule, reuniting mankind with
the peace of God. Those who trust
in the Lord can experience perfect
peace, even in the midst of storms.
After thc program, everyone was
invited downstairs for refreshments
and a time of fellowship.
