This. week - Exeter Hawks. A Year of Rebuilding By George V. Pratt, President of Hawks One year ago, the Exeter Junior "D" Hawks won the league cham- pionship and then went on to the all -Ontario Championship, losing four games to two to Lambeth. We had a good group of players and winning most of our gamds was a foregone conclusion. One would think that a winning team would also be on the win- ning side with the fans and also on the ledger sheet: As it turned out, this was not to be the case. Fan support was not up to expecta= tions, even during the playoffs and at the end of it all we had no money in the bank and owed numerous suppliers a combined total of $8,000. To make things .worse, most of the players from that team were playing their last year of eligibility, and a number of others have gone to play elsewhere. We were also faced with forming a new Ex- ecutive and hiring a new Coach and Manager. During the summer of '88, we had numerous meetings, trying to plan the upcoming season and coming up with ways and ideas on how to raise the required funds to operate for another year. We were able to hire a top-rated coach. Jack Nairn from St. Marys who in the past was a super player and went on to coach the Stratford Cullitons to numerous all -Ontario championships. We are fortunate to have this extremely fine coach and fine gentleman with us for this sea- son. Itis a privilege to be with him. We also hired a manager, Exeter O.P.P. Sergeant Al Quinn who , has done a great job of recruiting a group of new young players. So,. with these two individuals looking after the players, the Executive could now give full attention to the Administrative part of the team. Our major !money raising effort is in our program advertising and with the proceeds from that we were able to pay off all of last year's . debts. We arc now in the midst of selling chocolate covered almonds. Our tournament is coming up on January 6, 7 and 8, 1989 with eight teams entered. We also have a dance and draw planned for Janu- ary 28 at the Exeter Legion with Whiskey Jack playing. Thc Exeter Legion donated S1,(XX) and also is supplying the night at the dance free of charge. The team itself has only four players that have returned from last year. All the rest of them arc for the most part new to Jr. "D" hock- ey. Players such'as Joel Campbell, 13 years old, Steve DuBarry, 14 years old, Derek Shackleton, 14 years - all contribute to making this team probably among the youngest junior teams in Ontario. For a team as young as this, we are doing amazingly well. We arc presently playing better than 500 hockey which under the circum- stances is Incredible. We arc presently playing short-handed due to a number of injured payers, but that's something that happens. Thc arca we seem to be having the most problems, is in attracting people to come and watch our games. We've tried to come up with the solution (if there is one) to this situation, but it probably is mainly due to the fact that we have a very successful Senior "B" team in Exeter as well. It is good entertaining hockey and naturally draws a great number of the public. It is good hockey, but we are in a different category - we arc mostly minor hockey players. We aren't in a competition for the fans admission ticket. Each game costs a minimum of S300 to put on and gate receipts usually don't cover this. Then there are away games where transpor- tation costs have to be met. Overall, this year's team - Executive, coach, manager and players have faccd a tremendous challenge. To this point on.all aspects we've done well, but there is still so much more to do. I also .wish to thank all those people with this team*,rtheirbeip • and support. Come on out to a Hawk game, you may be surprised on how en- tertaining it is. Thank you, and have a Warm and Wonderful Holiday Season.
