TORONTO - The Hockey Devel-
opment Centre for Ontario an-
nounced today that the second annu-
al Esso Penalty Free Sweepstakes
will take place from January 6 to
January 22, 1989. The program,
sponsored by Esso Petroleum Cana-
da to Ontario's 300,000 amateur
hockey players in January 1988 to
help promote skills,- safety, and
sportsmanship on the ice.
Paul Henderson, former N.H.L.
star and program spokesman had
this to say, "Although everyone
knew last year that the timing, the.
spirit, and the opportunity for a
penalty -free initiative in hockey was
right on, no one. predicted the high
level of success that the Penalty
Free Sweepstakes achiet•ed in its
first year. -
The more than 2500 penalty -free
games played during the 14 -days of
thc contest was about double what
-we expected, but the most..gratify-
ing result was that over 80. percent
of the teams that played penalty free
won or tied the game. The message
to -players, teams and coaches is
very clear. Playing penalty free is
not only good hockey, it is winning
hockey.
Chairman of the H.D.C.O., Fred
Mantle added "We arc looking for-
ward to an even bigger success in
this year's program as coaches and
players arc more faniiliar with the
concept and its benefits. Winning
prizes is a great incentive in -itself,
but we also know now that. 'penalty
free'' is a winning attitude that re-
sults in winning garnes." .

Esso and one of the key proponents
of the program said, "We have had
along association with hockey and
arc very pleased to be a part of this
positive initiative that can Only re-
sult in a renewed focus on the finer
aspect of a great sport."
Morc than S50,0(X) worth of great
team prizes will be up for grabs in
the 1989 Esso Penalty Free Sweep-
stakes and all amateur hockey teams
across the province are eligihle to
enter. The Grand Prize this year will
be CCM Custom Tacks supplied
through Cupolo s Sports.
Under the rules of the contest,.
teams may submit a Sweepstakes
'entry form for every penalty -free
game they play during the contest
period. If the other team takes pen-
alties, it docs not destroy the eligi-
bility of the penalty -free team. Each
player on every team submitting a•
valid entry will receive an Esso
Penalty Free Sweepstakes Certifi-
cate of Achievement and a crest.
Entry Forms are available from
participating Esso Retailers, your
local hockey association, and arena
managers.
"The large number of entries from
team's across Ontario in support of
•the Esso Penalty Free Sweepstakes
last ycar, confirms the groundswell
of support for good, clean hockey I
have seen whcn I've talked with
players, parents •and coaches from
Quinte to Thunder Bay to Windsor,"
said Hugh P. O'Neil, Ontario Mini-
ster of Tourism and Recreation.
"We all want to reduce the num-
ber of sports related injuries in this
province. The Sweepstakes, by pro-
moting clean hockey, is promoting
safe hockey."
In 1988, almost 4,000 individual
prizes (250 team prizes) were won
and more than 25,000 hockey
players throughout the province
were awarded the Esso Penalty Free
Sweepstakes Certificate of Achieve-
ment and crest.
Sweepstakes winners will be de-
cided February 10, 1989 by a series
of random draws from the eligible
entries.
