Animal welfare GUELPH. - The University -of Guelphhas become the first Cana- - dian university offering veterinary'.- and eterinary''and animal science programsto have the clinical and research capac- ity. for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a non-surgical, radiation -free technology tliat' offers pew levels of diagnostic information. The S1.3 million' MRI• facility under the direction of Prof. Edward Janzen, is located in the department or biomedical sciences in the Onta- rio Veterinary College. Like X-rays or untrasound, MRI offers researchers.an opportunity to look inside the body without using surgery. But most similarities stop - there. . Whereas X-rays involve low-level radiation and are essentially snap- shots of dense matter such as bone, MRI "pictures" are obtained through the use of harmless mag- netic field produced by the MRI unit. This alignment can be trans- lated into unprecedented pictures of areas like the brain, heart or the lungs -- wherever there's soft tissue 'or fat, which has high concentra- tions of hydrogens. Like MRI, ultrasound also offers more than pictures of bone, but ul- trasound technology has not ad- vanced to the point where it can provide the kind of detail obvious in MRI images. By using a sensor that can be pinpointed anywhere along the axis of an animal placed inside a magnetic chamber, magnet- ic resonance imaging can isolate and depict -extremely thin "slices" of the eject. Tissue and fat appear as distinctly different bright areas in the MRI image. Fight abuse TORONTO - Ontario Minister of Tourism and Recreation Hugh P. O'Neil has reaffirmed the province's resolve to fight substance abuse in competitive sport, and pointed to progress in establishing a united front against the problem. Optimistic following a national conference of sport and recreation ministers November 1-3 in Winni- peg, Mr. O'Neil said: A solid base of understanding has been achieved with other prov- inces and the federal government to attack sport -related substance abuse. "Discussions with other ministers were productive," he said. "It was gratifying for me to learn in Winni- peg that other provinces, the territo- ries and the Neral government share our serio s commitment to a permanent end to any form of per- formance-enhancing'substances in athletics." ' The federal and provincial govern- ments have pledged to develop a joint action plan to deal with sub- stance -abuse in sport,.with empha- sis on drug education programs. That national campaign will com- plement initiatives already undertak- en in Ontario. Last month, the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Recreation an- 6 nounccd a 51.76 -million program aimed at improving sport and recre- ation safety. At the same time a new Advisory Committee on Sport, Fitness and Recreation Safetywas created. While sports -related injuries re- main a major concern to' the Gov- ernment of Ontario, the issue of substance abuse in sport will not be ignored by the saac+gnatr:,, mittee,' Mr. O'Neil said. "Th? committee has, in fact, been specif- ically directed to examine and advise my Ministry on all aspects of sports safety." . rt y Lucan Community Centre .Music y Country Versatiles $35.00 per couple ' 9-?
