Our Christmas traditions were traced from their beginnings to the present. Mrs. Jean Murray told us why we celebrate Christmas birth on De- cember 25 although the exact date is unknown. Mrs. Florence Fink- beiner told of the use of the Christ- mas tree from the time of Martin Luther. Mrs. Doris Sillcry ex- plained how gift giving originated with the Magi. Mrs. Olive Hicks told the story of Saint Nicholas, from whom our Santa Claus tradition comes. Mrs. Mildred Thomson recalled how feasting came from the Romans who celebrated the return of the sun after the shortest day of the year. Mrs. Laura Dickic and Mrs. Laura Sillcry read short Christmas sto- ries., The group then suggested ways in which we can put Christ into our Christmas celebrations. The meet- ing closed with a Christmas bene- diction. After five years of high school and six at university, Ronalee Bo- gart has returned to education's hat - lowed halls. This 25 -year-old Exeter native has been placed at the Goderich-high school until January, when she will return to the University of Western Ontario to complete her final four months of school. Bogart says she plans to become a teacher majoring in physical education and minoring in grade nine and 10 science. Several factors have influenced this decision. After a year of experi- menting with medicine at McMaster University, the student teacher then transferred to the University of Wa- terloo. Entry into this institution''s co- operative education program was the next step. Since then Bogart has been placed in a school in Missis- sauga as well as a fitness center in California. She has also completed research for the army and worked with the developmentally handi- capped. Bogart said these work experienc- es have, "helped me decide what I want to do." A love for kids and athletics has also helped Bogart in her decision. During a visit to Goderich District Collegiate Institute in April, Bogart indicated an interest in coaching to phys-cd head; Lynn Meyers. Now Bogart is one of the coaches of the GDCI midget girls basketball team. Interest in athletics runs through Bogart's family. Her older brother is a physical education teacher in Woodstock. Her younger brother is involved in this third year of phys- ed in Exeter. Bogart's parents contribute as well, her father being a teacher at South Huron District Secondary School, while her mother's inicrests go to a sports shop in Exeter. Although Bogart cheers her GDCI basketball team on, she laughingly admits, "1 still get riled about Exet- er." The great debate, concerning the virtues of both Goderich and Exeter athletics, commences when talking shop with her family. While the bantering about the in- ter -school rivalry may continue, Bo- gart's co-op experience concludes in. January. Although Bogart supports and enjoys GDCI, she will return to Waterloo to complete her final four months of the program.
