VARNA - About 35 members
and guests of Varna United Church
Women enjoyed a delicious meal
last Thursday, December 1 at the
Church. Shirley Hill entertained
with piano music prior to the din-• •
ner anti accompanied Barbara Ann
Parker for the singing of the Christ-
mas Carols before the program.
Joan. Beierling welcomed the
guests • and thanked everyone who
contributed to the enjoyhhle eve-
- ning and all who had helped her dur-
ing her term as president.. She an-
nounced that the dew president is
Deb Rathwell and the vice-president
is Carol Simons.
Barbara Ann Parker began the
• worship service with a reading of -S
the Christmas Story:• A drama of
" The.Lights of Christmas" was pre-
sented by Barbara Ann, Bernice •
Reid, Margaret McClymont and
Doris Wilson. During the presenta-
tion of the offering, Barbara Ann
played "Star of the East" on the
flute. Deb Rathwell and Barbara
Ann sang a lovely duct, "Redeem-
ing Love".
- Rev. Samuel Parker introduced
his friend Ray Shaginaw of Cam-•
bridge who showed slides of his
school environment and his work .
with the group Youth with a Mis-
sion. There arc 60(X) full time, un-
- paid workers of varying ages in the
organization.
Youth with a Mission has a uni-
versity and -counselling school in
beautiful Hawaii. There are 3000
students on campus at a time, in-
cluding whole families and single
people from many countries.
Ray left a secure government job -
and solei his house to join them.
Along with his training in counsel-
ling, he was required to do two
hours of physical labour each day.
Ray worked in Australia, New
Zealand and Long Beach, Califor-
nia. He showed his slides of the
Camtxxfians outside of their home-
land. There arc • large numbers of
youth in territorial gangs there and
murders arc a daily occurrence. The
workers lived on out -dated food
gathered from supermarkets and
shared what they didn't use with
Others.
Youth with -a Mission has two
mercy ships which help in disaster
areas such as .the Mexican Earth-
quake.
"The Spirit Blows" is the philos-
ophy he lives by, going wherever
he feels God's spirit calls him. He
has had interesting and exciting ex-
perienccs in his calling. At present
he is an arboriculturist (works with
trees and shrubs) in Cambridge.
Sunday; December 4 way the sec-
ond Sunday of Advent. Rev. Sam
Parker explained the meaning of the
Ncw Life Candle which was the
green one and Jason Beier -ling lit it.
Next Sunday will be Advent 111
and Goshen's Christmas. Sunday
School Presentation.
Youth Group meets at the Church
on Thursday, December 8 at 7:30
p.m.

GRANTON - At St. Thomas An-
glican Church, the Rev. Beverley
Anne Wheeler was Celebrant. for the
Holy Eucharist service assisted by
Roy Moore and Paul Acres. Kay -
leen Roloson was Crucifer. The
lessons were read by Lois Herbert.
and the Gospel by the rector. The
Advent candles were lit by'Melanic
-Beason.
The minister explained the mean-
ing of the candles to the children.
Rev. Wheeler's sermon was entitled
"What it means to be a priest". Af-
lcr.thc service a time of fellowship
was enjoyed with lunch and coffee
prepared by Donna Acres.
The A.C.W. meeting will be held
on Thursday December 8 at the
home of Ethel Crouch.
Sunday guests -with Mr. and Mrs.
Kenneth Hddgins were Lois Her-
bert, Rod Johnson, Helen Herbert,
Gary and betty Ann Waugh of Lon-
. don, Glenn, Marion and Jason Hall
of Glencoe. This was a fancily
gathering to honour Betty Ann on
her birthday.
At Granton United Church, Rev.
Bruce Pierce was in charge of the
morning worship and entitled his
sermon "The Song the Shepherds
Heard" based on the scripture pas-
sage Luke 6:8-18.
Once again there will be a Ncw
Year's eve family night at 8 p.m. at
Granton United Church. Everyone
is welcome to an evening of fun,
food and fellowship - a time to
bring the Ncw Year in with prayer
and worship.
Amelia Jameson was hostess for
Unit I of Granton U-.C.W. on
Thursday afternoon. This was a
Christmas dinner meeting and well
a.lotel•l. ..
