Sports Spotlight
by Wayne Proctor
For years now I have fancied myself as an above average bowler.
Not a great bowler mind you, but not just an average bowler either.
I started bowling when I Was seven or eight years old and at that
age 1 felt 1- was getting a late start in the sport because fricnds'ol
mine who, at the same age, had already been -bowling for three
years. I had nothing to do Saturday mornings, other than watch car-
toons,. so I joined with them as a junior bowler.
Bowling in -this area is different from where I grew up in Windsor.
Thcrc is virtually not five -pin bowling to speak ol. Most of it is -ten
pin and there is a lot of it. In Windsor there are a total of six howl-
ingestablishments. Four are for ten pin bowling with a total of 198
lanes -and two are for five -pin bowers with a total of 24 lanes.
When 1 moved to take the job here at the TA I was surprised to
learn there arc only two bowling establishments in this area.with a
total of six lanes in each serving this entire arca. But 1•found out I
was out of luck when 1 learned that the.closest ten -pin howling alley
was in London. 1 was hoping to keep up with my howling but .1 .
guess I am out Of luck unless l take up live pin.
1 found out there was a bow ling alley in Exeter but it closed five
years ago, after being in town since 1949. It was owned by the Far-
quhars but they sold it to Darling's IGA. They do feel that Exeter. -
co support another howling alley, without hurting business at the
outer two places because most •of the people in Exeter_go to Lucan
or Zurich to do their howling.- -
I have bx wled five pin about ten times •in my life but never with
very much luck. I mean after honw ling ten pin for so long it is hard
to just pick up the smaller hall and think. 1 could do just as goxxl.
After all there arc a number of dpi tcrences between the games: •
Tho'. most obvious difference is there are twice as many pins in ten
pin. howling. In ten pin jou can put your fingers in the •ball, where
as in -five pin you put your fingers around the hall. You get one ex-
tra shot to knock down half as many pins in fiVo pin. And scoring
is different -in five pin. A perfect game in five pin is 450 and ten pin
is 300. '
Ten pin howling is an American gang and I guess that is why it
is so popular in Windsor. it .hasn't really made an impact this far
north yet but it is popular in .some larger cities like London. Wind-
sor, in fact, is the only Canadian stop on the Professional Bowlers
Tour that travels around the United States. • .
There arc a number of leagues at both local establishments. Zurich
Town and Country Lanes. has leagues just about every day and for
all age groups. The Youth. Bowling Congress bowls on Saturday
mornings and there arc several senior citizens leagues.
At Lucan Bowling Lanes Youth Bowling takes places during the
week. I was a junioir howler when I first started so I know what that
is like. Now. looking hack I can appreciate all the help my coaches
have given me over the years. They gave of•their time to make me a
better bowler and 1 can better appreciate their effirrst now that 1 am
older and I ani sure that things arc the same at the local bow ling
lanes with the junior howling.
Sure you don't have to be the greatest athlete in the world, hut
bowling is something you can do when you are -six or 96 and it is
probably the world -largest indoi>r participatory sport in the world. It
may in fact be the next Olympic sport in the very near future. -
