Sunday night the Mohawks de- feated the Elora Rocks 5.2 at the South Huron Rec Centre, with a full lineup: Brooks was forced to play because three regular players were missing and they had only 13 skaters for the game, including Brooks. "Considering it was my first game all year with body contaot, I didn't feel too bad after the game," said Brooks. "1 hope I am never needed to play again but it's nice to let the guys know that 1 can play if I have to." - .General manager Bob Rowe handled the duties behind the bench while Brooks was on the ice. Brooks said things are finally coming together for his team after the first 11 gimes. "Things are really falling into place for us tight know. I think we are getting better defensively, guys are coming back and helping out the defence like we should anti eve- rybody else is getting into the act. We aren't doing a lot of things we are not capable of right now, -We know what our abilities are," said sports Brooks. The Mohawks jumped out to a 3-. 1 lead after the second period against the Blues but put the game away with five goals in the final period. Joe Scherer led the way for the winners with a hat trick and two as- sists. it was the second -straight game in which Scherer has scored a Panther Gagers open season .with loss By Michelle Ellison EXETER All three of South Huron District High School's boys basketball teams opened league play on Wednesday in Goderich. Unfortu- nately all three teams were unsuc- cessful in their attempts. Thc Midget boys were quite com- petitive in a tough game against the Vikings. Although the Panthers had many shots, a low -shooting per- centage caused them to be on the short end of a 63-57 score. Mark Russell and Matt Licrman had an excellent rebounding game and Mark Keller and Peter Overholt played well as guards. Randy Johnson was top scorer with 10 points followed by Terry Guenther and Jason Heywood adding six each. Coach George McEwen feels the team "looks good for upcoming Hu- ron Perth action". The Junior boys played an intense game which ended ina 41-40 clash in- favour of the Vikings. Both teams •fought to the finish but the Panthers canis up short. Coach, Dennis Nielsen was disap- pointed with the timers, scorers and officials of the game and felt it was definitely anybody's game. - Steve DuBarry led the team with 21 points, followed by Brett Borden with seven and Jason Clarke had six. , The Senior boys had some diffi- culty against Goderich losing 55- 20. The Panthers put forth an out- standing effort but couldn't catch the Vikings. Rob Pearen and Tim McAllister led thc team with 10 and nine points respectively.. Broncos win third .straight Thc Exeter Broncos travelled to Forest on Sunday and won their third straight game -4-2. Chris McDonald paced the Bron- cos -with one goal and* two assists - in thc winning effort. The Broncos scored the first two goals of the game from Ben Guenther. and Rob Lyon. Adam Hern and Chris McDo- nald assisted on the two goals. Forest scored the next goal but Adam Hcm replied with one of his own from a pass from McDonald. Forest closed the gap in the third period but Chris McDonald iced the game on a solo dash. Jason Lindenfield made several big saves, to save the game for the Broncos. The Broncos play and host Lu - can on Sunday. Exeter Bantam team to take on Swedes Exeter Legion Bantams will be hosting a team from Akcrsberga Sweden on December 29 at the E-C- ctcr Rcc Centre. The game will start at 8:00 p.m. with pre -game ceremonies com- mencing at 7:30. , During their stay in Canada thc Swedish players will be based in St. Marys and will also play St. Marys and Wallaccburg Banters. He picked up three goals last Sunday when the Mohawks blasted the Grand Valley Harvesters 9-3 in Grand Valley. Joe Scherer - Exeter Mohawk for- ward Joe Scherer fired -a hat trick when the Mohawks, beat the Har- riston B1ueg Saturday night in Har rist on. Mohawks got single goals from Dave Randerson, Bill Glover, Mark Sochner, Wayne Urbshott and John Kernick on Saturday. In addition to Scherer's and Brook's pair of set ups, Kris Bedard and Glover also had a pair and sin- gles went to Randcrson, Barry Baynham, Al Gates, Kemick, Jeff Warren and Tim Adair. . Bill Dark was very solid in net for the Mohawks as was Steve Lantz in net for Harriston.,- The score could have been much higher on both sides. - EXETER 5 ELORA 2 The win over thc Rocks gives the Mohawks the South Division championship for the the Hardy Cup. They now have five points to one for the Rocks in thc double home -and -home series against the Rocks for the league's Hardy Cup title. The Irish dumped the Hawks on the scoreboard- 6-2. i manage tie in two.games EXETER - All good things must come to an end! ° The Exeter Hawks had there four - game winning streak snapped Friday night when they lost 6 -2 -to the Lu- can Irish at the South Huron Rec Centre. They managed a 7-7 tie in Sea - forth against the Centenaires Sun- day afternoon. A lack of offensive output cost the Hawks against Lucan because the Irish scored four unanswered third period goals after Jean Paul Cousineau had tied the scored 2-2 at 1:13 of the final period. It was only one of two shots that the Hawks :ould manage on Lucan goalie Doug Haskiit in the last period, as Lucan cruised to the win. The Irish had 33 shots on Hawk netminder Todd Campbell over three periods, while the Hawks could only manage 15 on Haskett, but stayed close until the third.peri- od because of many fine stops by • Campbell. "We had our bubble burst there in thethird period. They (Lucan) are a big tough team and earned full marks for their win," said Hawk coach Jack Nairn. The Irish got a pair of goals from Joe Febrey and Darren Neil each and Scott Denomy and Jamie Pearce each picked up one goal.. Jim Lewis hit the score sheet first for the Hawks, from Jean Paul Cousineau and Derek Shackclton. Cousineau fired the other goal for the Hawks early in the third, from Shackleton. *EXETER 7 SEAFORTH 7 -This game was close the .mahout.
