Vitamins and stress
In today's hectic society, it isn't unusual that someone is expected
to juggle the responsibilities of a job, a home and a family. This
kind of pressure can make anyone feel stressed. When a person is ex-
periencing emotionally stressful times, the body's nervous and hor-
monal systems respond. For example, the heart beats faster, respira-
tion quickens, blood pressure and blood sugar rise, palms get sweaty,:.
the stomach may become upset, and so on. This reaction to -stress..
would provide excellent support to a person should they need to take
action suddenly and for a short period of time. But if the stress re:
sponse is prolonged, it can have a major effect on our health.
Many people feel that taking a vitamin pill during these times,
helps them cope with stress. But are vitamin supplements. really
helpful? There is little scientific evidence that looks at the effects of
emotional stress and vitamins. But, to date, the bottom line is that
there is no clearly defined role for vitamin supplements in alleviating
emotional stress.
Stress can affect our eating habits however. That is, during stress-
ful times, we may respond by either over -eating or under -eating. If
our dietary habits change like this, then our nutritional status may
be affected.
If a person's appetite is spoiled by stress, eating small steals or
snacks frequently throughout the day can be a way of getting the
needed nutrients without eating large meals.
If a person responds to stress by eating more than usual, then fexid
selection becomes very important. Choosing low caloric -foods can
help. For the over -eater, regular exercise to burn off excess calories
and relieve the effects of stress can also be very helpful. •
Stress is a part of most everyone's life and finding ways to cope
with it positively is very important. Being careful to continue -to eat
properly is one of these ways, but vitamin -supplements, unfortu-
nately, aren't the magic answer.
