animals at the fair
EXETER - In the grains and seeds
competition at the weekend Exeter
Fair, Peter Tuckey gained the most
points _while Rick Etherington had
the best first cut of hay.
Field crop winners were: barley -
Allan Rundle; wheat - Wayne Hern;
ensilage corn - Paul Passmore;
grain corn - Peter Tuckey; hay -
Hem Farms; soybeans - Passmore
Farms and white beans - John
Thomson.
Prizes in draft horses went to Ar-
nold Young, Don Sawerlcy, Ralph
Kent and Al Pattison. -
The. best Haflinger foal was
shown by Ken Dcwhirst and Stew-
art Thiel exhibited the champion-
ship mare.
In the amateur light horse show,
- Dale Marshall was best in senior
showmanship, Lee Hope won west-
ern pleasure and Sandee Ryan was
the winner in the senior barrel race.
William Windsor of Leamington -
won in the purebred Arabian west-
ern pleasure over seven other con-
testants.
The goat show showed an in-
crease in exhibitors. Jan Hayward
had the champion Toggenburg, -
Marci LeForge the best Nubian and
Margaret McDonald the best dairy
herd.
In sheep Don Dearing showed the
champion Dorset Horned ewe.
Poultry section winners were Mi-
chael Becker wi.it the best Leghorn
hen and Cliff Pepper won first prize
for Minorca cockerels. Becker
showed a total of 163 birds.
In the hog carcass competition,
June Miller's 13 1/2 pound ham
was judged best and it was sold to
Wayne Shapton Construction for
$21 a pound.
Exeter District Co-operative pur-
chased the 13 pound second place
ham from Alan Hern for S12.50 per
pound and Michael Hem's 11 1/2
pound ham was bought by Hensall
District Co-operative for S10.50 a
pound.
Exeter 4-11 Calf Club had a very
successful show at the fair this
year. Only two participants were
not able to compete while the other
13 had a nice crowd on hand to
watch as they went through. their
paces. .
The winners were: Conformation
- Steer - Rob Hern; Michael Hern
and Lisa. Hcrn; Conformation -
Hcifcr - Tim Hoffman, Chad Wil-
liamson. and Randy Hoffman;
Showmanship - Senior - Rob Hcrn,
Toth Passmore and Tim Hoffman.
Thanks to the members for partic-
ipating and the Sponsors who donat-
ed toward prizes, ribbons and ex-
penses of this years 4-1-1 Calf Club.

Patons win
at International
STRATFORD - After four days
of participation in the two furrow
mounted plow class at the 1988 In-
ternational Plowing Match in Perth
county, two Middlesex residents
came out on top.
Ron Abbott of Thomdalc was de -
dared champion over 11 other con=
testants and Clare Paton of Lucan
was reserve champion. In the grand champion antique
class, Jim Paton of Lucan placed
sixth.

wood has won a national award for
outstanding design quality, accord-
ing to Bill Becker, President of
Becker Farm EquiQment Ltd. •
"The Magnum tractors carried fust

•ponsored by the Industrial Design-
rs Society of America (IDSA),"
Becker said. •
"The IDSA calls this contest the
ndustrial Design Excellence Award .

DEA competition had more than
10 entries."
The IDEA awards recognize in-
ustrial designs for excellence in
five areas: innovativeness, user
benefits, appealing appearance, ap-
propriate use of materials, and cost-
efficient production.
The IDEA jurors, who are all pro-
fessional industrial designers, said
the Magnum tractors deserved rec-
ognition because the product exhib-
ited, "carefully guided evolutionary
design and addressed and improved
actual use problems whenever pos-
sible."
Winning this contest tanks the
Magnum tractors as first class prod-
ucts along with the winners in oth-
er categories, according to Becker.
Becker said'tlte Magnum tractors
are the first tractors designed for the
1990's.
The 1988 IDEA award is the
most recent of several awards won
by Case 111 with die Magnum trac-
tor line. Other awards include:
grand prize award in Plastics World
magazine's Best in Design 1988
competition: honorable mention in
Industrial Design magazine's 1988
ID Annual Design Review; recog-
nition as one of the top 50 agricul-
tural innovations of 1987 by the
American Society of Agricultural
Engineering magazine; and selec-
tion as a Top Product of _ 1987 by
Farm Industry News magazine.
