"I've. been there .14 years and I _think ,it's time for me to get out,". Green said Thursday. "It's brie for somebody with some fresh ideas to get -in there. . His primary reastn for retiring from public office is a. municipal rule which requires councillors to own property in their municipality. Green is building a house on prop- erty_outside Grand Bend because'he was unable to find a suitable lot in the village. .Another factor.in Green's decision is the increased pressure council has :been under in the past two .years. - "The.way we arc right now, -with all the development going on;- it was almost like a full-time job," _Green' explained: "I haven't -had a . good holiday in 13 years." • The Reeve expressed regret over leaving several items of business unfinished, such as the annexation. issue and the- Gibbs beat h. dispute; but he Jooks forward to secin 'new angles•on old problems., • 'Td like to see somebody new and fresh with some good fresh ideas," he -said.. "It's time somebody came up with a whole new approach to it., . One Of the natural -choices to take over where Green left off is.Deputy Reeve Dennis Snider. Snider said -Thursday that he..would definitely stand for re-election, but he was un- sure_which position he would .pur- -- sue. "I've got to figure out how much time -I've got for other activities. That's my .problem -- that's my only problem." Snider added that he would never run against Green. Despite frequent • disagreements between the two _in -the council chambers, Snider said of Green, "council business has al - HAROLD GREEN - NOT RUNNING ways been done in the chamber" where it belongs. After -her first term on council, Marsha Lemon is•also considering a second kick at the can.. "1'm thinking about it -- I'm. seri- ously thinking about it," Lemon said at her place of business Thurs- day. . The commitment council requires will be a factor in her decision, which she expects to make ;n the next few days. "The work -load has increased dra- matically over the last three years;" she said. . For Bruce Woodley, the decision has already been made. • "Yes, I am going to run in the election as a councillor, but noth- ing more," Woodley said Monday, noting that family responsibilities and various other community Com- mitments prevent him from going after the position of Reeve or De- puty Reeve. . Shirley Mitchell, who took over for an ailing Barb Southcott earlier this year, originally had no inten- tion of running for council. But she may respond to the positive feed- back she has received from the pub- lic. "A' lot -of people want me to run," Mitchell said. "I'm sort of be- ing pressured into it." Mitchell, who usually spends a portion of the winter in Florida, finds the three-year term a bit in- timida ing. She would have to re- organize her winter holidays into shorter stints. "You don't mind one or two years, but you think -- three years -- it's a long time to give up every winter." • At this point;: Mitchell is. leaning tow'. -unning for a council spot. Rumours have been circulating through the village that former Reeve Bob Sharen will be running for the top position on council in November: Sharen said Monday that he was considering throwing his hat into the ring, but would wait until th¢ last couple of weeks to decide. - "I am being approached quite a bit but I have -not made a decision," Sharen said. "It takes quite a bit of discussion with the family before you make a decision like that."
