THIS AREA'S
MOST COMPLETE
RECREATION AND
HOLIDAY FACILITY
A place for aI
seasons -
By Yvonne Reynolds
• "This is a thrill, a dream -come true", is
the way Dave Seetcherd describes his feel-
ings about the expansion of facilities at
Oakwood Inn.
The "Little inn on, Lake Huron" can now
offer year-round accommodation, a fitness
club, an indoor pool, sauna and Jacuzzi, a
new nine -room motel unit overlooking the
18th hole of the Oakwood golf course, a
spacious new office, 16 additional rooms
on the south- side of the original main
building, 4 billiards room and a third con-
ference rm. The number of guest rooms
is now.56. '-' -.
The appealing interior decor of the new
rooms and office are the result of a happy
collaboration between Scatchcrd's wife
Valerie and' Raintree Design, Exeter.
Large reproductions of old Grand Bend
scenes add a unique touch.
The seven rustic cabins nestled in thc
woods since 1922 remain as -popular as.
ever; they are still the first t be booked.
The beautifully wooded site also has a
private beach and an 18 -hole golf course.
Four miles of pipeline sprinkler will be
installed this fall to water the fairways. .
. The Oakwood now offers summer golf
vacations, winter skiing holidays, and ac-
commodation in all seasons for conferenc-
es and seminars for anywhere from 10 to
100 people.
Memberships are currently bcing sold
in the Oakwood health club, which will
run from September to May. The rest of
the year, the equipment will be available
to all Inn guests. •
"This was_alLfigured-out-last•-year: It's
exciting to see it all working", Scatchcrd
said, noting that a year ago no rooms were
booked, and the dining room was empty.
Twelve months later, 20 rooms were occu-
pied, and 60 people were making selec-
tions from the revamped menu.
Word of the expanded facilities is spread-
ing quickly. Bookings have come in re-
cently.from Ford, 3M and Ellis -Don. The
day Scatchard was interviewed, September
15, agroup from GM was holding a con-
ference at thc Oakwood, and the Grand
Bend Chamber of Conference was hosting
the first of what they hope will become an
annual fund-raising golf tournament.
Scatchard donated the use of the greens.
enabling ,the Chamber to ear -mark about
$3,000 f ' community projects.
Scatch rd is very sympathetic to such
charitable ndeavours. The Dive Sc:+tcherd
Invitational Golf Classic he began in
1982 raises as much as $40,000 annually
for the Scatchcrd Children's Centre in Lon-
don.
"Local" had been a key word Scatch-
erd's vocabulary since he pu•_;..i cd Oak-
wood in 1980.
