assistant coach
OHIO - Paul Pooley, formerly of
Exeter, Ohio State' hockey's all-
time leader in:•goals, assists and
points and a former AI1-American,
• has been named assistant coach for
the Buckeyes, Athletic Director
• Jim Jones announced today. Poo
ley's appointment is 'subject t� ap-
proval by the board of trustees.
"Paul will be my primary re •
-
cruiter," said OSU head coach Jerry
Welsh, "but he will help on the ice
too. I watched him work with the
- players last year (as a volunteer as-
sistant), and he 'relates well to
them. He'll spend . a lot of time
working with the power play units
and offensive strategy."
From 1981 through 1984, Poo-
ley amassed 270 points`on 114
goals and 156 assists to rank .12th
on the all-time NCAA scoring list.
Pooley also holds the OSU single-
season records: for points (96) and
assists (64), both marks recorded
en route to Central Collegiate
Hockey Association Player -of -the -
Year honors in 1983-84.
He was one of 10 finalists for
Ile 1984 Hobey Baker Memorial
Award as college hockey's top
- player. Pooley was a four -time
OSU Scholar -Athlete and a three -
time CCHA All -Academic pick. -
Paul and his twin brother Perry,
who also starred at OSU, signed
with the Winnipeg lets of the Na-
tional Hockey League in 1984. He
played in the NHL unti1.1986 and
last year entered private business
with Perry in Columbus.

last year, and it made me.want to
be more involved," says Pooley:
Dubarry--leads Exeter men
EXETER - Steve Dubarry
claimed low gross in A flight when
he shot a 41 during men's night at
the Exeter golf course. Don Wallace
followed Dubarrry with a 46.
Low net honours in A flight went
to Kitch Pavlick who recorded a 32.
Frank Dubarry followed with 40.

with 49.

Steve Dubarry was credited with
the longest drive and came closest
tothe hole. Skins went to Gary
Koehler and Jack Ford while Kirch
Shuffle-
board
EXETER - Albert Hummel re-
corded the high- score when he
turned in a 384 in four games of
mixed shuffleboard, Wednesday. Ile
was followed by Steve Hrapchak
with 263 and Ernie Ross with 237.
In five games, John Pepper scored
396 to lead the boards. Howard
Johns managed 380 and . Mabel
McKnight scored 363.
Thursday, it was Joe Gosar who
led the pack with 341. Steve Hrap-
chak was close behind with 319 and
Albert Hummel followed with 305.
Harold Davis rounded out the
scoring with 304.
The shuffleboard club will be
holding a pot -luck dinner at noon
on October 5.

• EXETER - The ladies of the Ex-
eter Lawn Bowling Club hosted a
tournament for 16 teams of trebles
Wednesday:
Teams wcrc present from London,
Mitchell, Atwood, Scaforth, Clin-
ton, Samia, Godcrich and Lucknow.
A London team placed first, Clin-
ton second, Scaforth third and
Mitchell forth. The consolation
-prize was-wo b an Atwood team.

thc season for the Exeter Club.

Bend
Soccer
wrap-up
GRAND BEND - The Grand Bend
and Area Soccer season has come to
an end last weekend with final tour-
naments in the district. Grand
Bend's year-end banquet and awards
night will be held on Sunday, Octo-
ber 16 at 5:30 p.m. in the legion
hall upstairs.
Exeter finally defamed Grand Bend
Peewees to take this years "A"
championship. In a great game,
which ended 0-0, Exeter came up
lucky in overtime, scoring their
single goal. Grand Bend beat a
tough Si Columban with a 2-0
score, putting them into the finals.
Cary Brooks and Jeff Lingard were
the marksmen.
The Grand Bend Bantam team
also lost out in the "A" finals. An
Grand Bend teams ended up in the
"A" side with the exception of the.
Mosquitos who won the "8" divi-
sion this year.
Into the "A" tournament went the
Atoms, after defeating higher placed
Lucan with a convincing 4-1 score. •
Chris Duomes scored twice, with
singles by Simon Desjardine and
Matthew DeJong his game
matched up Grand Bend with a real-
ly tough St. Columban team.
Grand Bend worked hard, hitting
the posts several times. In the 4-1
loss, Desjardine scored Grand Bend's
only goal.
Pavlick won the 50/50 draw.
Next week, the group plans to
play the course backwards.

Vanderlaan is fourth
in cross-country opener
LONDON - South District High 14111 place finish for the midget
School's .Cross. Country team boys.
-opened their season Thursday in a
meet held at Spring Bank Park.
Brenda Vanderlaan placed fourth
and -Sandra Rooscnboom 24th for
the senior girls while Larry Miller
ran well and placed sixth for the
senior boys.
- Dari Vanderlaan also hrought in a
Kim Vandongen, who placed 14th
at OFSAA last year, was running
in sixth place until a knee injury
forced her to drop out of the race.
Vandongen said, "That race wasn't
too important. I just hope it (the
injury) doesn't affect my season."
