Times-Advocate, 1988-09-14, Page 14Page -2A Times -Advocate, September 14, 1988 Sports Spotlight \tk t:...•1 Sober warnings This week in St. Thomas a Junior B hocke-y coach was convicted of assault over an incident which took place Inst season between-Sar- nia etween Sar-nia Bee's and St. Thomas Stars. 'Provoked by fans yOling insults at a black player on the .Sarnia team, assistant coach Robert ~henries followed a.chargc into the stands and ended to punching a spectator. Tined S500 and put On probation for one. year, Menzies' case should serve as a warning to those involved in hockey .who believe that once you st.'p inside the doors of:an arena, laws no longer apply and civilization takes a back'+cat. - • in the time that:' have been covering hockey, I've seen numerous games marred by foul tempers and unsportsman-like behat'iar. -Strangely enough some Of the worst behavior I have seen, has come - about in the St. "Thoma~ arena -- ketchup and mustard sprayed all over the.locker-room while the visiting team was out on the icc, cat- calls and heck ling. ofan_tinusual standard. Notonly docs it send. out the wrong mess g about the sport, it affects the future attitudes of children. • "Ilio tans who began thc-altercation should probably be held equally -responsible for the fight. It takes quite a bit of coaxing to pull a team off the bench and i ito the, stands, but justice was probably served up with one fell swoop. Foul language and displays of childish temper on the ice and on the bene -h are picked up by the kids as examples to follow. Adult hockey players and coaches should keep that in mind when they feel like wrapping as stick around the referee's neck. Fa is should give that :some thought as well. Bunch of dopes I'd like to know what was going through the heads of the four Ca- nadian weight -lifters who have been banned from competition at the Summer Olympics in Scout There might not be much.to.know. It you know that drugs testing is likely, and you know that it means the, end of the road, should you be caught using such drugs as stcriods, docs it not make sense to stay away from the things? it's probably an indication of the kind of pressure the modern ath- lete is exposed to. Or maybe it's just another example -of of the lack of sportsmanship in our sports. The head of the International Olympic Committee, Juan Antonio Samaranch, called drug use "death of the spirit and intellect" and he's not far wrong. Winning with the help of drugs must be akin_to win- ning'hy forcfeit -- a hollow victory. Basketball begins - Terry O'Rourke is once more leading the South I-luron senior girls basketball team into the season. The girls will be hosting a Senior tournament at the high -school September 16-17. it will feature SHDHS and sevc,, other teams -from London, Kincardine, Strathroy, Woodstock and Sarnia. The competition should provide some good games. The general public. is invited to. attend thc.games. Tickets are selling for one dol- lar.
