The poetics of baseball
It was the bottom of the eighth inning in the final game of the
Ontario Senior D tournament and Exeter Express were making their
fourth and most dramatic come -from -behind effort of the weekend
when I noticed it.
Over the trees behind centre field, the big bright trunk of a rain-
bow was showing through some of the thickest clouds the weather
had seen fit to throw at us that day.
It was perfect.
Express took the lead after Brian Itorner sparked the locals with a
n Walt Macdonald and Kevin Drager followed
him home. That turned a 5-4 deficit Into a - lead which was good
enough. to. win the game.
And there was that rainbow, making baseball poetry. Express became -the Provincial Senior D champions for the second
time in three years Sunday when they beat Everett Expos in double,
• knockout play. For a tcam that has been around just six seasons,
they've gone out of their way to -make a. name for themselves in
baseball circles.
Penhale's contribution
When the members of the Express wcrc standing on the third base
line, receiving their medals from Mayor Bruce Shaw, a call went up
for Gar Penhalc. He came out to the group casually and was present-
ed with his medal.
The moment caused some of the Loudest cheering of the day.
Pcnhale began working on the logistics of the tournament as soon
as the snow began .to melt this year. He kept the event running
smoothly all weekend, even when the rain threatened to bring things
to a grinding halt: Quick adjustments had to be made when the Sca-
forth diamond was ruined by rain. Half of the tournament was moved
to Dashwood.
With the help of Gary Hartman (he was the guy with the wood
chips who kept the pitcher's mound from floating away) Pcnhale
kept things going.
In fact, he was still keeping things going on Tuesday, a full day
after the tourney was finished. Pcnhale was out at the baseball dia-
mond cleaning up.
Umpires needed
South Huron District High School opened up for business this
week, and a few of its teams arc already working out on the playing
field. The girls field hockey squad has been attending a clinic to im-
prove on what was the best team in Huron -Perth last season. •
Jim Workman, SHDHS field hockey guru, is looking for mature
people to umpire field hockey ga es. in Exeter, Mitchell and St.
Marys. Knowledge of the game is an se and training will be sup-
plied. Umpires receive $15 pergame plus mileage.
Anyone interested should call Workman at 235-0880 or 235-01.54
after 6 p.m.

Letters Bart DeVries
Dear Editor, PHOTOGRAPHY
"How many more days until.soc-
ccr?" That was a regular question
in our household from our son
Braydcn. When he knew that his
soccer was that particular night he•
was dressed and ready to go hours
before the scheduled time.
• For the past. two -years Braydcn
has been coming in to Exeter
Tuesday nights to play soccer Jan
the Tyke team and'has just loved
it. And one of the main reasons he
has enjoyed it so much is due to
his coach Henri DeBruyn.
Henri 'is fantastic with his Tyke
team. By the second practice he
knew every player's name and treat-
ed each youngster with so much at-
tention and kindness that it made
each player thoroughly enjoy their
year of soccer and certainly look
forward to next summer when they
can get on the soccer field again.
I'm sure the parents that signed
their children up this year really
appreciate all of Henri's time and
. effort with his team. He seemed to
be enjoying himself as much as
the little players.
Martin DcBruyn and his family
have certainly -added so much to
this community. Without their
constant efforts, minor soccer-
would
occerwould not be as popular as it was
.. this summer. People like this fam-
ily add so much to a community
that a lot of us don't realize.
Braydcn will probably be mov-
ing on. to a new team next year but
he will be taking with him a great
attitude toward sports, an attitude
that taught the youngsters that
.winning is not the most important
thing but trying your hardest and
enjoying yourself is, thanks to
Henri.
