Cafe worth a stop at Blyth
By Mark Bisset
. BLYTH - The festival in the
north has reinforced its stature once
again with this year's production of
Bordcrtown Cafe by Kelly Rebar.
Solid writing and excellent per-
formances combine to produce
what has to be Blyth's premier pro-
duction or the season.
Set on the desolate Alberta -
Montana border, the play deals
with turning points.
BORDERTOWN ROMANCE .i Maxine, played by Donna.Farron, gives
her husband Jim a rather startling kiss on the back of the head during a
scene from Bordertown Cafe. Jim is played by Jerry Franken.

Jimmy, a teenage bundle of con-
fusion, is trying to decide whether
or not to go live with his truck--
driving
ruck=driving father who has recently ac-
quired a new split-level and a new
wife --all south of the border.
The youngest character, played.
admirably by Kevin Bundy, a na-
tive of Goderich, has one day to
make his decision. As he tells his
mother, it's "like my whole life de-
cides to show up in my head, eh =-
in Panavision". In - that day, he
grows from a boy into a man --
more of a man than his philander-
ing father, according to Jimmy's
Grandfather.
The Grandfather, Jim, is a de-
lightful. character. He is only im-
,proved uponby actor Jerry Frank -
en's portrayal: Stoic in the face of
his wife Maxine's constant barrage
of chatter, Jim provides a large
portion of the play's humour. He
punctuates the performance with
LINT I
fESTIVIAL
one word reactions that are without
equal.
Maxine is played with boundless
energy by Donna Farron. The rela-
tionship between the two Grand-
. parents is interesting, if not exas-
perating.
• In fact, Bordcrtown Cafe is a col-
lection of - exasperating relation-
ships. Jimmy's mother, Marlene,
played by Laurel Pactz, is virtually
incapable of communicating with
her son. Tom between the desire to
give him everything and the need
to discipline him, Marlene ends up
contradicting contradictions.
But the lack of communication
in a family has rarely been stated
so eloquently.
Dcsaite Jimmy's admission, "It's
too Late. The damage is dont. I
went and grew up Canadian," there
is no apology for the Canadian
identity. Marlene made sure her
son was born. on Canadian soil;
Jimmy and hisgrandfather treat
Maxine's rantings about the glori-
ous U.S. with self-assured good -
humour rather than insecure anger.
More than anything I've seen,
Bordertown,Cafe captured the Cana-
dian feeling.
The play runs until September 17
at Blyth. After that, the company
will tour Ontario with the produc-
tion.
"There's nothing fancy about this
place," Matiene tells her restless
son, "but you'll like it more once
you're gone."
She's got a point. Bordcrtown
Cafe is the kind of play that sticks
with you for a long time.

HENSALL - Leading up to our
International Day featuring Switzer-
land, Thursday's. movie was
"Heidi". A wonderful film that
didn't leave too many dry eyes when
it was over. A Big thank you to
George Mathonia who entertained at
our monthly Birthday Party, Thurs-
day evening. Everyone thoroughly
enjoyed. the • familiar favorites
George played on the accordion.
Birthday greetings to Edna
McLellan, Irene Heamcn and Jean-
ette McDonald.
Friday afternoon, Switzerland was
featured at our International Day.
We started the afternoon with a
brief introduction about the cli-
mate, customs and people of Swit-
zerland. It was interesting that
some residents had family in Swit-
zerland or had travelled in that
country. The whole afternoon was
very enlightening as we discussed
Swiss watch making, the Swiss
banking system and their neutrali-
ty. Thank you to Mrs. Benno Du-
bler of Clinton also Elva Forrest
for the Swiss artifacts. We espe-
cially liked the tape of Swiss music
with yodelling.
We finished our afternoon as al-
ways with an appropriate snack -for
the country we studied: Swiss
cheese and crackers and hot choco-
late with loads of whipped cream.
