Or is that a • burp? "Little Shop of Horrors" .takes off for an enjoyable .two ' . hour fanciful flight into the nev- er-never world. of theatrical enter- tainment. " - First, one must put one's mind • into neutral to accept the musi-. cal'spremise of an alien, carniv- otoLs. plant. Then, fasten- your sew -belt, sit back, relax, and pre - Parc to be shocked into laughing in spite of yourself. The play, winner of 143's New York -Drama Critics' Circle. Award as best musical; is centred on a skid row florist shop run by its almost bankrupt owner Mr. Rlushnik and his assistants Sc •LUXTON-THIBERT -- Mary -Ann Thibert, daughter of Maurice and Jeannette, Lion's Head, wes united in marriage to Doug Luxton, son of -Robert and Rpberta Luxton, Exeter, on August • 6, 1988 in St. George's of Forest: Hill, --Kitchener. Seymour, a hapless nerd, ac- quires a strange little plant under mysterious circumstances, and discovers its required plant food - human blood.- As Seymour be- comes more anemic, the plant grows bigger and greedier. And famous. The shop begins to prosper, as docs the relationship between Seymour and and his co- worker: Complications arise as Sey- mour 'struggles to satisfy the .plant's insatiable appetite. All the players arc well cast. Greg ,Lawson is entirely believa- ble . as Seylnour the schmuck,. whose clumsiness is offset by basic decency, the nerd who. dares not -hope he could ever win the lovely Audrey away from .her • abusive, psychotic boyfriend: G Susan attoni is perfect as ethe- really beautiful Audrey, seeming - !y fated to live a blighted life without ever realizing her dream of getting away from the slums. Every gesture, every nuance, eve- ry high -heeled skip or shuffle,.en- hances the portrayal of an aching- ly vulnerable young woman trapped by her low self-esteem. Nicholas Rice is the personifi- cation of the immigrant shop- keeper whose seeming generosity is really self-serving: The versatile David Scammell devotes his considerable talents to playing a host of characters - the sadistic dentist, a TV mogul, a bag lady, a customer, and many: others. The other unforgettable star, in all` four stages of .growth, is the bloodthirsty .Audrey II. In full- blown maturity, the gigantic monster whose cavernous, tooth - filled mouth can_ swallow three people in quick succes§ion, domi- nates the stage. Audrey II is expertly manipulat- ed by Terry Todd, a member of the St. Marys Community Players. When Audrey is in full flower, all atrcmble throughout every ten- dril, leaf and stalk, an,,additional eight animators are putting life.in. her limbs. - Audrey II speaks and sings in a splendid baritone, courtesy of Ted Pearson. The strong, lyrical voic- 'es and high-spirited antics of Feather Chcrron, Renee Rogers and Maddic Willis provide.an ap- propriate chorus.
