While the beach was busy. events
were- also going on at Truck 'n
Trail; where- Guy Wilde of Grand
Bend "went over the top" on a
swing gym over 106 times to win
.first prize!
• GRAND BEND - A parade kicked
off.the oificial opening of. Saridcas-
te.Days, Saturday. morning. As the
llil,en�'ash Cadet Marching Band led
the procession; children and adults
-lined main street for the best view.
The.Pincdale. Motor Inn float en-
try read "Why Go South?" as vaca-
- tioners lounged amid palm trees,
silppirig iced tea.
• Jackie's Doughnuts featured. some
beauties riding a'ear festooned with
doughnuts, wtrat-else? Thcy were
fol lu« ed by 'a group of children on
.decoratcdbikcs. . • .
Algarva #698:of the Order of Al-
hambra bad two vehicles in the pa-
rade, a convertible with several Sir
Nobles and Father Paul-Beck,.chap-
lain, all in white fezzes. Thcy were
- -followed by the Alhambra parade:
vehicle, a.1946 Ford one -ton truck-,
where more Sir -Nobles rode in the
brick, throwing candy to the crowds
• of children. • • -
The govcrnincnt was duty reprc-
-sented by Murray Cardiff MP and
-Sid Fralcigh MP, and Davc Smith
MPP, alt riding in convertibles.. •
Dave Shepherd; chairman of the
Winter Carnival; drove .the 1988
Winter Carnival Queen, who shed -
- her parka in favour of a swimsuit.
Thcrc 'were trucks from Yoplait
and Kentucky Fried Chicken, and
the Grand Bend -marine truck Pulled
:crowned a beautiful 4. -WIN -NS cruiser with
from the bathing; beauties aboard. -

Winner of the Junior Miss Bath-
ing Suit Contest was- little bliss -
Denise Richie of hlen-sall, three
years old, -representing the three to •
six year old category. -
Two of the winners were-Mcrners
- Meats, who •won -an award .for
-"Summer Is a Slice". a huge slice
of watermelon on a float, where-.
people pecked out through holes -
made by seeds, pulled by a red .1945
Dodge one ton truck. •

First Prize Winner- entry was
from Huron Country Playhouse,.
where members of ttre Young Com-
pany danced around to -wild music
on one end of the float, and some
scenes frorn "Little Shop of.Hor-
rors" were played out on the other.
A vicious looking dentist was .at-
tempting to -extract teeth from -ser-
oral unfortunates, using a wicked
pair of pliers, 'while "Audrey. It"
watched the fun. A great parade. for
everybody! •
There. were fewer entries in the
•Sandcastle building competition
this year; which was held Saturday -
afternoon. "Team Turret" •from the'
Colonial • Hotel ''easily won •the
event with a- graceful -castle .sur-
rounded by a walled city; its houses
built into the walls, like the Middle
Ages. Turrets (row.ncd the main
gates, and the details were impres
sive. .
'There were several othcr.castics, a .
Dirge green shark; and a rathcrgriinf
.entry, titled "High Speed Accident'
where a corpse Nprim led facedown'
on a sandy bank:
Plenty of other activities filled
the weekend; especially for the hun-..
gry, including a yogurt sating. con-
test for junior and intermediate, a
hot deg eating conte -SL and a really
messy one, a blueberry pie"eating 4.

Grand winners- of the Treasure
Hunt Contest: were Ron and Jan.
Harrison of London. They won"
• S 1U0, plus a weekend for two at
Pinedale Motor Inn, dinner for. two -
at Fishernian's Covc and breakfast
for two at Patio Motel. There.werc
plenty of other prizes won by the
other treasure hunters as well.
Yoplaif provided several thousand
dollars worth of yogurt:product arid
prizes, the. Sandcastle days major
sponsor. Wieners for the hot dog
-contest were -supplied -by the•Ten-
derspot, and Barbara Gower of Bar-
bara's Naturally stayed up past 2:00
a.m. to take the blueberry pies for
the pie eating contest.
The -Grand -Bend Spon Parachut-
ing 'Club and the S.W.O.O.P.
school provided a daizling display
of agility- and control as their divers
dropped onto the beach, to the de-
light .of the crowd, on both Satur-
day and Sunday.
Children could .get their faces
painted, and the Ipperwash Cadet
Band gave a beach concert on Satur-
day. It was a marvelous; fun -filled
weekend to be at Grand Bend. Con-
gratulations to all the organizers,
Judges, contestants and sponsors for
another successful event!
