EXETER - West Lorne 76ers
emerged as the champion of the
seventh annual Exeter Royals fast -
ball tourney at 1 a.m. Monday
morning.
Some of the top teams and
players in Ontario took part in -the
weekend event with the two final
games being the most exciting in
the history of the tournament.
The tourney got underway Satur-
day morning after Friday's games
were rained out. -
West Lorne started out with a 3
1 win over. Fullarton A's as Steve
Virag spun a three hitter and Team
Canada member Rob Schneckenbur-
ger hit a home run.
Phil Avery had all three hits for.
Fullarton including a home run.
St. Pauls beat Lucan Harry 6 - 2
when Jon Bailey picked up the win.
Jeff Shipley had a two run homer in
the loss.
Sarnia beat St. Marys Selects 4
1 as Wayne Parizeau tossed.a four-
hitter and hit a home run.
Oakville beat new Hamburg Jun-
iors 6 - 0 when Bill Prichard had
three hits.

Bantams place
KINCARDINE - Exctcr Bantams
. came up.with a strong performance
to place third in the Bantam OBA
elimination tournament on the
-weekend. The tourney involved
nine teams from Western Ontario
and the winners advanced to the
OBA finals.
Exeter played five games in two
days, notching three wins and two
losses in their climb to thc semi-
finals.
The locals edged Hanover 12-11
and then suffered a 14-3 loss at thc.
hands of St. Marys only to re-
bound for a 3-2 win over Godcrich
and a 8-5 victory over Kincardine.
- Exeter was defeated 10-4 by Si.
Marys in the semi=final round.

Exctcr started the tourney with
an epic battle against Hanover
which went three extra innings with
the two teams locked in a 10-10 tic.
Jim Ahrens*started pitching for
Exeter. He was .replaced by Davc
Schwindt after four innings.
Schwindt struck out seven and al-
lowed no walks.
Left fielder Rob Kramer stole thc
show when he made a fine running
catch with two out to thwart two
base -runners in scoring position.
Juniors fail to repeat
against Senior Express
EXETER - Co-op Juniors were
unable to repeat their earlier perfor-

parts• to Creat Lakes Baseball, Ex-
eter Express when thcy met this.
-week. Juniors dropped a 6-3 deci-
' sion to Express in their second
meeting of the season.
Earlier this year, Co-ops pulled
out a surprising victory over the
more experienced team, but they
couldn't out -gun them this time.
After retiring three Juniors in a
row in the top of the first inning,
t:xpress jumped into a secure lead
Idith four runs.
Pete Hccncy started the show
with a single and then Juniors
pitcher Terry Cox walked Rob
Dickcy. Power hitter Dave Shaw
hit a home run to clear the bases
and make it 3-0.
Mike Neil scored on a single by
Walt Parkinson to end the first in-
ning scoring.
Cox tightened up and pitched
threeexcellent innings, but Co-op
bats were silent. •
A single by Brent O'Brien was
mis-handled in the outfield and
Steve Neil and Darren Little were
able to score, making it 4-2, but
Doug Fairbairn scored an unearned
run in the bottom of the fifth to
maintain some distance for Express.
Fred Grcgus singled to bring in
Neil in the sixth but it was all Co-
op Juniors -could muster.
One more unearned run by Davc.
Atthill in the seventh finished thc
game.
Notes: Juniors will be taking.
part in a tournament in Kincardine
this weekend.

Aces 2 - 1 with Steve Neeb tossing
a three -hitter.
Stratford Leyser beat Kitchener
McLeods 3 - 1 when Rick Nelson
hit a home run and Mark Daoust
tossed a three -hitter.
Petrolia beat Shakespeare 2 - 0,
led by Don Smith who tossed a
two -hitter and Mike Park who
notched a home run.
Chatham edged Owen Sound 6 - 5
coming back from a 5 - 1 deficit.
Dave Fritz had four hits for Owen
Sound.
In round two, West Lorne edged
St. Pauls 4 - 3. . Rick Abbott
picked up the win.
Lucan beat Fullarton A's 5 - 2 af-
ter Paul' Horenburg tossed a three -
hitter.
Sarnia beat Oakville 4 - 0 lcd by
Leri Dimuzio who tossed a three
hitter with 16 strikeouts.
Stratford Leyser beat Stratford
Optical 5 -2 with Jim Avery pick-
ing up the win..
Chepstow Aces beat McLeods 2 -
0 when Pete- Spitzig earned the
win.
Petrolia beat Chatham 5 - 2. Jim
Park picked up a win and Tim
Steadman hit a home run.
Shakespeare eliminated Owen
Sound.
Lucan scored one run in the sixth
and two in the seventh to edge Oak-
ville 3 - 2. Jeff Shipley tripled
twice.
St. Pauls put St. Marys out with

a 2 - 1 win in eight innings as John
Van Ness won a pitchers duel with
John Roger.
Chatham edged Chepstow 3 -2
with Vic Bossy tossing the win.
Shakespeare beat Stratford Optical
7.-2. Roy McMillan had three
hits.
Sunday morning 'saw a tourney
first when Steve Vrag for West
Lorne tosseti►a perfect game retiring
all 21 batters as they edged Sarnia 1

Petrolia mercied Leyser 11 - 0.
St. Pauls beat Lucan 3 - 1 as Jon
Bailey hit a home run and tossed a
no-hitter.
Shakespeare beat Chatham Kent
3-2 as Fred Folling picked up the
win and Kevin Yantzc had three
hits.
St. Pauls put out Sarnia 4 - 0 af-
ter Lothar Mueller hit a home run
and two singles and John Van Ness
picked up the win.
Leyser beat Shakespeare 4 - 2
with Steve Strasser getting the
win. .
In a battle of undefeated teams,
West Lorne beat Petrolia 6 - 1 after
Rob Schneckenburger hit a home
run.

Si. Pauls then eliminated Leyser
9 - 4 with Lcyscrs pulling out a
triple play in the game. Lothar
Mueller had three hits to his credit.
Petrolia then beat St. Pauls 5. - 2
after Jim Park picked up the win.
This set the stage for the first
game of the finals. Petrolia would
have to beat West Lorne twice to
capture the championship.
They won the first game in dra-
matic fashion. With West Lorne
leading 1 - (I in the bottom of the
seventh, Mark Roddich doubled and
Kent Helps reached on an error.
Roddich then scored after Terry
Symington struck out and the
catcher missed the ball.
In throwing to first base, the
throw hit the base runner in thc het-
" met, allowing the winning run to
score. This set up thc final game
for the championship because both
teams had one Toss.
West Lorne was sailing along
with a 4 - 0 lead into the seventh
with Rick Abbott working on a
one -hitter with two out in the sev-
enth. Petrolia proceeded to knock
in four runs to tic the game.
West Lorne then won it in the
bottom of the tenth when Paul
Stafford doubled and scored after
Paul McDonald singled him in.

Tykes drop two games, tie
EXETER - Rowe Fuels Tykes
ran into trouble against Parkhill
when they lost 21-6 despite a good
effort.
Andrew Hem turned in the Exeter
play of the game when he struck
out three consecutive batters in the
sixth inning. Hcrn pitched four
solids innings and wcnt two -for -
three at bat.
Jeff MacLcan contributed two
hits in four attempts at bat -as did
Andy Glavin who also managed a
triple.

A lead-off home run by Paul Van

Darryl Hartman, who had one hit
in a single trip to the plate, was on
the mound for the tic after he came
in to relieve Bert. Guenther who

Andy Glavin tripled and Jeff MacL-
ean went three -for -four at bat.
Listowel handed Exeter a 18-15
loss in a garne which could have
gonc either way July 20.
•. Van Dyken picked up two hits in
four tries -while Jcff.MacLcan man-
aged three hits.
I lartman and Hem each had two
-bits in three tries while Maskcll had
two hits and Jeff Glavin notched
one.

Mark Russell lcd the team offen-
sively with.four singles to his cred-
it. Schwindt turned in one double
and two singles while Ryan Linden-
ficld and Jason Heywood managed
two singles each.
Jamie Cornish, Fred Stcciuk,
Shawn McFalls and Ahrens each
had one single.
St. Marys 14 - Exeter 3
• A fifth inning explosion by St.
Marys which saw nine runs cross
the plate put a win out of reach for
Exctcr in game two. Trailing 5-3 in
the fourth, a win was well within
reach for Exctcr, but they were un-
able to recover from the disastrous
fifth.
Heywood went the distance for
Exctcr, striking out three and milk-
ing one opponent. no td
Russell added a home rhis
credit when he slugged the ball over
the left field fence. Schwindt added a
pair of singles while Stcciuk and
Ahrens each hit singles. • •

EXETER - Scnior Express left
no doubt as to which was the bet-
ter team when they came up
against Strathroy Sunday and
worked their way to a 17-9 win.
Express pushed four runs across
the plate in the first inning and
managed four more in the second,
leaving, the score at 8-2 as the two
teams entered the third.
Express added two runs in the
fourth, three in the sixth and four
more -in the seventh to counter a
four run burst by Strathroy in the
fourth.
Kevin Hcrn lcd Exeter offensive-
ly with two R131 singles and a
home run which bre:ight two more
runners in. Mike Neil also earned a
pair of RBI singles and a double.
Doug Fairbairn hit a two R131 dou-
ble.
Kevin Dragerwas on the mound
for.Exctcr.
A
struck out six batters and walked
just one opponent in the remaining
seven innings of play.
In the bottom of the eighth, first
baseman Shawn McFalls made a
fine jumping catch on a hard line
drive to keep the bases empty.
Scwhindt_doubled and added a -sin-
gle in the effort while Russell con-
tributed a double.
- Singles came from Ahrens, Lin-
denf ield and McFalls.
Exeter 8 - Kincardine 5
Exctcr Bantams headed into game
four with just 10 players on the
bench but what coach Gary Hart-
man described as "the most positive
attitude I've seen throughout the
season" propelled thein to a win
over tie host team.
Schwindt pitched the. entire game,
retiring six opponents and walking
one. •
Outfielders Rob Kramer, Cornish -
and Jeremy Brock 'were key etc- -
mcnts in the win, catching numer-
ous halls. Lindenficld also turned in
a great performance as short stop, at
, one point leaping up to catch a
Kincardine line drive. -
Schwindt added one -double and
two singles to his record while Cor-
nish notched a double and a -single.
Heywood knocked out three singles
and Lindenficld, Russell, AhrcnS
and Kramer had • two singles each.
Brock added a single:

side. As they entered game five 'of
the tournament. Exctcr was deter-
mined to change their luck against
St. Marys and it showed.
Exctcr put two nuns on the hoard
in the first inning, but pitching
problems hampered their drive.
Ahrens and Russell each pitched
an inning, but tired, they were un-
