Times -Advocate, August 10, 1988 Page 9 Lucan seniors project off the ground LUCAN - "A dream come true"; That's the way Lucan Lions club president Lary Hotson described the new Lucan and community seniors apartment construction project which officially got off the ground Saturday afternoon. What was planned as a sod turn- ing ceremony became a dirt throw- ing ceremony as Middlesex MPP Doug Reycraft and London - 'Middlesex MP Terry Clifford tossed ground over the footings which have already been poured. The LucanLionsare sponsoring the 35 unit projectwith funding from both the federal and provincial governments. Hotson is also chairman of the non-profit corporation committee which will oversee operation of the facility at die corner of Beech and Market streets. At a total post of $2.3 million, the project will provide 23 one bed- room apartments and 12 *two bed- room units, two of which are out- fitted for the handicapped. Hotson said 40 percent of the units will be geared to income. Middlesex warden Richard Bolton said a project of this kind was great as "it allows seniors to stay in their own community". Middlesex MPP Dou,g Reycraft lauded the Lions for their initiative saying, When I was warden in 1984 in dialogue with council, sen- iors apartments were talked about. Now, the Lions have brought it about." • Reycraft continued, ° Housing needs in rural Ontario arc different; Government policies tend to re- spond more to the needs of urban areas. Lucan reeve. Norm Steeper also commended the Lions for their ef- forts. Steeper said council had start- ed a housing survey •some eight years ago, but things moved faster when the service_ club became in- volved. In speaking to chairman Hotson, McGillivray reeve Charlie Corbett said, " You were the one that dug in. Today is a tribute to you and your committee. This facility is really needed in Lucan and North Middlcscx. This may be the step- ping stonc for better things to come in senior care facilities. - London -Middlesex MP Terry Clifford said, "This project provides an excellent example of what can be accomplisheel when people and gov- ernments work together to solve.a problem of mutual concern: the provision of good housing for elder- ly people who require financial as- sistance". He continued, " The federal gov- ernment shared the view of the province of Ontario and the Lucan Non -Profit Apartment Corporation that a home for the community's senior citizens was a most desirable undertaking, We agreed to insure through CMHC, the mortgage loan of $2,315,263. In addition we will cost -share with the province, the annual operating subsidy for the project". The Lucan Community Non - Profit Apartment Corporation will receive in the first year, as federal operating subsidy of $105,068 and an additional estimated subsidy of $130,441 will come from the Onta- rio Ministry of Housing. Cliffoid concluded, " Projects of this nature are part of the endeavour of the government of Canada to "Work with provincial governments and private non-profit corporations to give all Canadians access to af- fordable housing. Naturally, our priorities arc for those in greatest or "core" need".-. • The architect for the project is Nicholas Varias of Brcvik, Scorgie and Wasylko Architects Ltd. of London . Contractor is Dave Grant Associates of Lambeth. The build- ing is expected to be completed by March , 1989: . - iffr • 1 LIONS BEHIND PROJECT - The Lucan Lions were the driving force behind the new seniors apartment project which got underway Saturday af- ternoon.
