Cowgirls claim three wins in South Perth action
Crcditow Cowgirls added three
more wins and one loss to their
standings by defeating Blanshard
-11-1, Denfield 9-8, .Kirkton 12-2
and then losing to the Exeter Greys

Against the Kirkton ladies club,
Cowgirls -started off slow and, al-
lowed their opposition to take the
lead in•thc second inning but start-
ed to use their buts in the third in-
ning notching four runs, one more
run in the fifth and then blasted in
`seven more runs in the seventh in-
ning to take the win;
B.ren(ia Morgari pitched a -strong
steady game coming away with
eight strikeouts. She also led the
Cowgirls .at bat with a triple, dou-
ble and a single.
Kelli Phillips notched three sin-
gle hits, Mary Lou Tasko and Lori •
Devlacminek added two hits and
Brenda Wilds started the Cowgirls
to their final score in the third with
a long homerun. Singles came
from the bats of -Pauline Brannon,
Marilyn Young, Deb Lord, Lisa
Van Gcel, Lori Van Osch and Ka-
thy Giclen.
Brannon played a steady catcher's
position, Yoi;hg and Lord had
some great catches and Tasko
played a great second base.
Against the strong Exeter Greys
on Tuesday, July 26, the Crediton
Colonials lose to Chatham
GRAND BEND - The Grand Bend
Colonial Soccer team lost another
game this week when Chatham beat
them 2-0. With.a bye this week,
Colonial's next game is August .7 -
at the West Williams field against
- Wallaccburg.
.The Mosquitos defeated Cold •
-
stream with a high -scoring 10-3
win. Josh Vermculen scored three
goals while Kevin Carson picked
up two. Single goals went to Jere-
my Anderson, Warren Haist, Mi-
chael Stanlake, Philip Carey, and
Trent Stcllingwcrff.
In their last two matches, Mos-
quitos were shut -out, by St. Co-
lumban I and St. Columban II.
Both games wcrc 8-0. They play at
home tonight. against Lucan.

defeated .Lucan, .3-1 on ,July, 18.
Simon Dcsjardine scored twice, and
Troy Stcllingwcrff added the single
on a penalty shot.- _
Monday, July 25 Grand Bend lost
to Arva 2-1. It was a very tight
match, with no scoring in the first

half. Desjardine put the ball into
the net on a penalty shot.
The Grand Bend Squirts are on a
winning streak after winning their
last three games. •
July 14 they beat Exeter Ill in a
4-2 game. Bryce Kadlccik and Brian
Tuddrick scored two goals each.
Squirts then beat Nairn 9-0. Kadlc-
cik booted in four, Tuddrick, three;
and Leslie Stefanko scored two.
Thursday, July 28, Squirts pulled
out. a 3-1 win over Coldstream.
Kadlecik scored two, with Tuddrick
adding the third goal. -
Sportsfest depends on support
WINGIIAM - Th a success of any
community event depends on the
support of sponsors, community
organizations and volunteers.
Sportsfest '88, to beheld in Wing -
ham August 19, 20; 21, is no ex-
ception.
To date almost 75 volunteers are
busy organizing the 29 fun -filled
sporting events for this festive
weekend. • They arc also busy with
preparations designed to help dis-
play Winghain in all of its fine co-
lours to the 3,000 visitors who are
. expected to attend.
Though these . volunteers have
helped to bring the reality of a suc-
cessful weekend within reach, many
more arc needed to really make it
happen. •"Wingham businesses,
community groups and residents
have really -pulled together for this

EXETER - Allan Johns claimed
high score with two wins and a
score of 27 Tuesday when 28
-bowlers took to the lawns in Exet-
cr. Bev Parsons followed with two
wins and a score of 26 and Isabel
Rogerson claimed third place with
two wins and a score of 24 plus
four.
Lauretta Siegncr managed two
wins and a score of 23 plus five.
• Shc was followed by 1 Icnry Trick-
ey and Bill Rogerson who tied
with two wins and a -score of 23
each.

Saturday saw some tough compe-
tition among 21 bowlers -when Al-
lan McFalls emerged at the top with
two wins and a score of 29. In sec-
ond place was Gertrude Hamilton
with two wins and a score of 27.
She was followed by Peter McFalls
with two wins and a score of 24.

They came on strong in the first
inning by making contact with -Ex-
eter's Tess Nethery's pitches, load-
ing the bases.
Greys tied up the score at 1-1 in
the second inning and then added
one run in each of the next three
innings to take the win.
Leading Crediton at the plate was
Brenda Morgan with two singles.
Debbie Lord, Lori Devlaeminck,
Karen Williams and Pauline Bran-
non each added single hits leaving
six runners on base but were un-
successful in hitting them home.
Morgan pitched a very competi-
tive game and good fielding was
displayed by Pauline Brannon, Kel-
li Phillips and Deb Lord.
Against Denfield on Monday,
July 25, Crediton and Dcnhelds:. H
a real see saw battle for the lead.
Crediton played well defensively
but were- plagued with lots of
strikeouts They did manage three
homeruns, however.
Leading Crediton at the plate was
Morgan with a homerun, a triple
and a single. Mary Lou Tasko was
three -for -four trips to the plate, Kar-
en Williams and Brenda Wilds had a
homerun and single each. while
Margie Austin and Tammy Regicr
added single hits.
Debbie Lord pitched her first
game coming back from an injury.
Lord, Tasko, Wilds. and Austin
played a good defensive game also.
Friday, July 22, Cowgirls came
on strong in the second inning to
Cops run for Olympics
TORONTO - The "Adopt -A -Cop"
fund-raising program for Special
Olympics is up and running at On-
tario Provincial Police detachments
and other police forces across the
province.
Special Olympics is an interna-
tional program of physical fitness,
sports training and athletic competi-
tion for children and adults with
mental retardation.
"Last year, 1,120 law enforce-
ment runners ran over 550 miles
and raised in excess of $100,000 for
Special Olympics in Ontario. The
total distance of this year's eight
runs exceeds 2,000 miles," said S/
Sgt. Bill Small, Special Olympics
Law Enforcement Torch Run Coor-
dinator for the OPP.
Each of the ceremonial Torch
Runs begins in August at a differ-
ent time and place, however, all
eight runs finish together in Hamil-
ton on August 12 for the official
start of Special Olympics.

. EXETER - Ray Cottle managed
a high score of 326 in five games
of mixed shuffleboard action this
weektolead the pack. He was fol-
lowed by Clara Harris with 321
and Estelle Chalmt;i'swuh 308.
In six games, John Pepper' led
with 482. Pepper was followed by
Albert Rummel with 433 and Joe-
Gosar with 406. Lloyd Lovell
- rounded out the scoring with 402.
Pepper was again at the top of
. the pile after four games when he
scored 394 to top Pearl
McKnight's score of 260.
In five games, Albert Hummel
notched 499 to claim high. score'
Joe Gosar followed with 370 and r
Charlie Tindall placed third with
363.
Wilma Davis closed out the scor-
ing with 321.

Exeter Royals seventh annual
fastball tournament gets underway
Friday August 5 at 8 p.m.. The
three day, 16 team, true double -
knockout event will feature teams
from all parts of Ontario. They arc
playing for 52,000 in travel money
with first prize being $1,000.
Friday night on diamond one at 8
p.m., Lucan Harry's Spring Service
with St. Marys Creamery junior
ace hurler. Paul Horenburg as well
as veterans Brian Noyes, Dennis
Carty and Kevin Lightfoot will
play last year's Royals tourney
champs and South Perth champi-
ons, St. Pauls Generals.
• On diamond two Fullarton 'A's'
former tourney champs will take on
West Lorne featuring Steve Virag
and Rob Schneckenbcrger.

on Saturday. Play will resume Sun-
day morning at 10:30 a.m. with the
final games starting around 4:30
p.m.
