Shaw in good standing
I talked to Dave Shaw during an Exeter Express baseball game
Tuesday night about the recent trade New York Rangers and Quebec
Nordique made.
Rangers swapped Walt Poddubny, top scorer on the team, along
with defcnccmcn Bruce Bell (former Nordiquc) and Jari Gronstrand for
Quebec's veteran defenceman Normand Rochefort and centre Jason
Lafrenicre
Shaw, going into his second yew -with New York, seems to think
it was a good move. Asked if the acquisition of the seasoned Roche -
fort was any threat to his full time spot on the ice, Shaw pointed out
that two defcnccmcn went to Quebec in return for one rear -guard.
Rochefort apparently clicked with John O'Grodnick during the
playoffs two seasons ago. Shaw thinks Michel Bergeron has plans to
re -unite the two.
Despite the fact that Poddubny scored 38 goals and notched 50 as-
sists with Rangers last, season, Shaw says Rangers don't stand to
lose much with the trade. According to the New York defenceman,
Poddubny was not a team player.
After turning in a 32 point season last year with seven goals and
25 assists, Shaw is anxious to get back on skates. Training camp
opens September 10. •
"We've had a long summer;" he quips.
George,- oh ,George
George Bell .finally earned at least part of one of the zeros on his
pay -check Monday when he knocked the ball out of Exhibition Sta-
dium to bring in three runs and secure a 3-1 win for Toronto Blue
Jays over Minnesota Twins.
The fans, rightly cranky after another season with the Leafs, after
the collapse of their ball -park birds, had ragged Bell in the early stag-
es of the game when he caught a routine fly -ball -- a rarity for last
season's league MVP.
But they changed their tune when he smashed the ball over the
right field fence.
Oh, George, you, know how it goes -- bum one minute, hero the
next. .
Always elegant with the spoken word, Bell told reporters simply :
Precise, raw prose.
Do you think he's mad at us? •
Great fastball
If you're looking for some great fastball action this weekend, you
have two choices.
Licury Minor Ball is holding their annual event at the Licury dia-
mond Sunday. The feature gamc,,beginning at 2:30 p.m., should be
a barn burner. Ontario. Junior champs St. Marys Creamery Juniors
arc going to meet a select team made up of stars in the South West-
ern Men's Fastball League and anchored by Derwin Hodgins, ace
pitcher for Sarnia Ranson.
Saturday night, Exeter Royals will be right in the thick of thcir
seventh annual fastball tourney. Royals manager Fred Cook in-
formal me that some of the best ball will be played that night when
the top teams vie for the Sunday finals.

forSquirt
In squirt action this week, Exctcr
.1 had trouble converting their chanc-
es into enough -goals to win ,the
game against Lucan I and had to
settle for a 2-2 tie:
Michael Wilhelm scored both
goals for Exctcr I. Lucan scored late
in -the game to salvage the tic.
Brendan Kraftchcck played well.
Exeter 11 and Exctcr i1I clashed in
the othcr game. Both teams were
tied in the standings before the
game and the match up in the field
confirmed the tic. Both teams had
thcir chances but in the cnd a 1-1
tic was a good reflection of thc
play.
• Exctcr 11 was led by Jacob Bruner.
Bruner was also in on the only goal
for Exeter II as be and Dan Snell,
dug the ball out to set Greg Geof-
frey up for his goal.
Exctcr iII had outstanding goal-
tending from Brian Hayman and
Ben Cottrell.
Brent Hartman scored Exeter's
lone goal.
In atom play both Exctcr teams
arc putting the league on fire of
late. Exctcr i got an excellent game
from Jeremy Brand and Theresa
Wilhelm and a four goal perfor-
kom Jeff Sararas as they
trounced highly placed'Coldstream
by a 9-0 score.
Other scorers for Exeter were Ge-
offrey Mayer (1), David Farquhar
(1), Jonathan Groot (2), and Billy
Kline (1). •
Steven Hcrn's shut out goal tcna-
ing led Exeter Ii ter a 2-0 win over
Lucan ii. Exctcr controlled the play
for -most of the game and were full
value for thc win.
Luke Sims and Bryce Hann scored
for Exeter 11.
in girls under 11 action Exctcr re-
corded an easy 1-0 win in Cold-
stream. After travelling to Cold-
stream the opposition could not
field a team.
The Exeter Mosquitos did not see
any action this week. They resume
play next week ill quest for first
place in their division.
in Pee. Wee action, Exeter i took
sole possession of first. place after
downing Lucan. Led by Mark Brint-
nell and Joel Campbell in midfield,
Exctcr played an excellent game. -
Exeter I goals were scored by
Nick Szabo (2), Tim Brand (1),
Craig Hern (1), Peter Kantzas (1),
Jaimic Dougall (1), and Eugene
Bocrsma.
Exctcr 11 had a difficult time in
their game against St. Columban.
Play:ng without some of thcir top
players Exctcr fell behind early and
were behind 4-0 at half time. .
in the second half, Exeter showed
its- true character as they held
draw
St.Columban to a 1-1 tic for a 5-1
final•scorc.
Souban •Inlakharta scored Exctcr
II's lone goal.
In under 17 action, Exctcr kcpt up
for a long time with a 'very strong
and rough Ilderton team but in the
cnd came up on the losing side of a
4-3 score.
Rick Topp, Jason McFalls and
Chris Chanyi scored for Exctcr.
• In their second gamc of the wcck,
Exctcr played such better soccer and
dominated Strathroy. The final 3-2
score was not a true reflection of
the advantage in play the Exctcr
kids had.
Brett Rideout and Geoff Sanders
were stand -outs for Exctcr in this
game.
Scorers were Justin O'Rourke,
Chris Chanyi and Brent Bell.
