Jack Nairn named Junior Hawks head coach
EXETER ER Local hockey man
Jack Nairn has been selected to take
the helm of the Junior D Hawks
next season. Nairn, well-known for
his tenure with the now defunct Lu-
•can-Ildenon Jets -and Stratford Jun-
ior B Cullitons, will take the reigns
of the Junior club when training
scamp starts in the last week of Au-
gust.
Nairn was named after Hawks
formed a new executive body recent-
ly. George Pratt, team trainer and
executive member last season, will
take over as president. Al Quinn
was named general manager. -
While a first vice-president has
yet to be appointed, John Skca will
fill the duties of second vice-
president.. Nancy Quinn took the
position of secretary.
- As head coach, Nairn is on the
look -out for local talent.
"I hope we can use a lot of local
kids," Nairn said at his home Tues-
day night. "That's what Junior D is
all about."
Not only does local talent cut ex-
penses, it tends to draw' bigger
crowds over the course of The sea-
son: But Nairn adds, "You've got to
be competitive too."
Nairn brings a long history of
hockey experience to the club.

season record fell to six wins and
13 losses last Wednesday when they
dropped a 4-3 decision to Stratford
Army & Navy in 10 innings.
Exeter errors played a key role in
the loss as. three- of the four Strat-
ford runs were unearned, including
the winner.
Stratford opened the scoring in
the first inning on a walk, sacrifice
and an error. Royals took the lead
in the third inning with two runs
and Stratford tied the score in the
sixth with thcir-only. earned run of -
the game.
They took the lead in the seventh
only to have Exctcr tic the score at
3 - 3 with a run in the top of the
ninth.
Leading Royals at the plate was
Mike Desjardinc with two hits in

four trips.
. Dan I Icywood, Doug Todd, Brian
Hodgins and Greg Wise each added
one hit.
In St. Marys on Monday morning
a 4-0 foss to eventual tournament
winners, Richmond Hill, eliminated
mediate team and later a Senior
team, Nairn guided them through
seven years of success.
As head coach of Cullitons in
Stratford, Nairn led the team to two
all -Ontario championships and five
league championships. Cullitons
were also Ontario finalists once
during Nairn's stint. At that time
he coached Quincy Wilker, Paul
Barton and Dave Randerson --
known now as Exeter Mohawks
"Stratford line".
After a two year stint coaching
St. Marys Bantams, Nairn accepted
the post of head coach with St.
Marys Junior B Lincolns in 1985.
He didn't finish the season with the
again
Royals from .the annual Creamery
Junior tourney.
• Exeter finished seventh in the 16
team event, with -a record of two
wins and two losses. Their. other
loss was an 8-1 pasting . by St.
Marys Juniors while they defeated
Sebringvillc Juniors 6 -0 -behind the
three hit pitching of Greg Wise and
Tavistock Merchants 3-1. -
Doug Leonhardt was the winning
pitcher in the win over Tavistock.
He gave up only four hits while
sulking out 16 and walking none.
Royals next home action will. be
Thursday night with Ncw Hamburg
Juniors providing the opposition.

Lincs, however, due largely to in-
ternal conflicts in the organization.
Nairnreturned to coach St.•Marys
Bantams. He was offered a coaching
job with London Junior B Dia-
monds, but refused the invitation
because he felt the drive would be
too much.
Last year he didn't coach at all.
"You miss it when you're out of
it," Nairn said. "You want to put
something back into it."
Hawks should have a strong re-
turning nucleus in the coming sea-
son. Nairn expects roughly 10
players from last year's line-up to
return. He. hopes to build a strong
skating team with an emphasis on
defence.
Discipline will also be a key to
success. Nairn wants to keep penal-
ty minureFat.a minimum, noting
that "no one wants to watch a four
hour hockey game". -
While Hawks star goalie Dave
Rook went over -age at the end of
last season, Nairn expects Derrick
Martin to fill the space easily. Mar-
tin, in his first year with Hawks
last season, was scouted by Lin-
colns during the playoffs.
• Nairn's hockey approach is re-
freshingly simple.
"They've got to have fun at it,"
he explained. "That's what we've
got to stress. It's Only a game,.
you've got to remember. If it's not
fun for the players and not fun for
the fans, then what's the point."
Asked if hewas concerned that
the Senior Mohawks would steal
some of the Junior team's thunder --
something that happened late in the
season last year -- Nairn didn't seem
concerned.
"You've got two teams and
you've just got to work together,"
Ise said. "If you've got a good cali-
bre of hockey, the fans are going to
Pi je 1A come."
HEAD HAWK -- Jack Nairn has been named head coach for the 1988-89
version of Exeter Junior D Hawks. Nairn brings with him years of hockey
experience. .
Exeter 1 finalists in Centennial Cu
EXETER - The -Atom I team
worked their way into the A final of
the Exeter Centennial Cup this
'week•when the local soccer club or-
ganized another successful tourna-
ment which drew eight Atom
teams.
Both Exeter teams started out
strong and won their first game to
go into the side semi-final.
Exeter I got shut -out goal tending
from Cory Dulemba en route to a
5-0 win over Goderich II.
David Farquhar scored twice while
Chad Gilfillan, Jeff Sararas and Ge-
offrey Mayer each scored singles for
Exeter I.
Exeter II also played very well in
their first game against Goderich I.
A 2-0 shut outwin was .the result.
Scoring for Exeter II were Bryce
Hann and Luke Sims.
. In the A semi-final, Exeter I came
up against a strong Strathroy team
and probably played their best game
of the season.
Defensive play by Adam Hcrn and
Roy Hodgson and the goalkeeping
of Cory Dulemba wcrc the key to
Exctcr I's success in shutting down
the Strathroy offence.
The midfield play of Chad Gilfil-
Ian, Billy Kline and Scott Rasen-
berg kept the Strathroy attack from
getting started.
The win put Exeter I in the A fi-
nal. Scorers were. Jeff Sararas (2)
and Chad Gilfillan.
Exctcr II played a good game in
the .other semi-final against a
strong Listowel team.
' Exctcr II took the lead early on a
goal by Bryce Hann and for most of
the game it looked as •though the
two Exeter teams were going to
meet in the final, however two late
goals, one with only seconds left in
the game gave Listowel a 2-1 win
and a place in the A final.
The A final was anticlimactic for
the Exctcr I team. After playing so
well; especially in the semi final,
they just couldn't find the way to
the net in the final againsta well
coached Listowel team.
The final score was 6-0 for Lis-
towel.
Congratulations to the Exctcr
coaches and kids for an excellent
tournament. Special thanks to Sher-
ri and Kevin Pfaff for convening the
tournament and to the -parent _votun-
leers for their help in the booth.
Express rusty after layoff, drop two
EXETER - Senior Express are a
little rusty after a Tull in their
schedule. Express were downed 9-7
by Strathroy in Great Lakes base-
ball action Tuesday night. Earlier in
the week they dropped a 7-6 deci-
sion to Seaforth. -
Tuesday, Dave Hunt threw for six
strike outs in five innings. He al-
lowed just two hits before Paul Els-
ton came in to replace him. Elston
ran into trouble, giving up six hits
before being rescued by Kevin
Drager.
Express took a 5-1 lead in the
third inning after Mike Neil hit a
home run to score Pete Hecncy and
Dave Shaw.
Singles. from Paul Gilmour, Dave
Anthill and Dragcr pushed in two
more runs before the end of the in-
ning.

fifth, but exploded in the sixth for

Express took on Strathroy
four runs. They added three more in
the top of the seventh.
Express mounted a small rally in
the bottom of the seventh when
Neil and Gilmour were brought
home on a single. by Atthill and a
double by Drager, but they fell two
runs short.
,Seaforth 7 - Exeter 6
Express again allowed an early
lead to dwindle when they met Sea -
forth and lost 7-6. Exeter built up a
4-1 lead by the bottom of the third,
but they were unable to keep up the
pace.
A triple by Neil scored Heency in
the first. Shaw added to the score
when he batted in Doug Fairbairn
and Neil.
A home run by Neil in the third
Rave Exeter a 4-0 advantage. Exctcr
left two men stranded on base. Sca-
forth scored once in the bottom of
the third but Exeter countered that
when Kevin Hem scored on an error
in the fourth. ,
Barham, who carried the
pile ing Buttes into the sixth, al-
lowed seven hits before he was re-
lieved by Steve Pearce. Seaforth
scored twice on Pearce in the sixth.
and twice in the ninth to edge Ex-
press.
Exeter's last run was scored by
Hem after he came home on a sacri-
