While the Beach Patrol is in la- vour of installing guards on the section of beach which has reap- peared south of the pier thanks to low water levels, they do not think - it would be wise to spread out the Playground successful by Susan . The lifeguard captain told council they should post signs on the South beach warning bathers to swim at their own risk for the rest ;of .this season, then establish a plan for next season. Reidy explained the population .of the North beach has spread out this season to take advantage of ge- ographic changes such as sand -bars -- a fact which makes it more diffi- cult for the patrol to operate effec- tively. Additionally, the beach pa- trol is constantly administering first aid and dealing with minor in- fractions like dog problems, and the illegal use of glass items or alcohol on the beach. All of these factors draw Cuc vo the guard's auentior vaway from the wa- ter, Reidy pointed out. Reducing the staff by one could cause a dangerous situation. "Those people need to be protect- ed by the guard in the stand," Reidy said. "They deserve it." - Councillor Marsha Lemon point- ed out that the South beach was not being over -run with tourists, but rather populated by families and cot- tage owners. Perhaps this year it's not a crisis situation right now," Lemon said. "There doesn't seem to be a great flood of tourists on the beach right now.,, Reidy agreed. Reeve Harold Green suggested that Reidy draw up a solid proposal ►.. z `- ice,. g w. _. z . fix's r. for next season and submit it to that it would be unwise to deplete council.
