'One foot in the rroLV' b7c' She coined the phrase when she started talking and we all .use it now. Shc had trouble with the -let- ter L. Shc would say, in her beau- tiful wee voice: I can't be -reeve it! Well, I can't be -reeve that Kaitlin is seven years old this month. She working beside me as I write, care- fully crafting a red tree on a sheet of yellow paper. "See, Paw -Bob," she teaches me. "You draw the trunk and then make a vee. You can make a vee wherever you want and as many as you want and then you have a tree. Butdoesa robin have a white tail? I want to put a robin in this tree." "No. It has a black tail with just a little white stripe across it. Did you know a robin is a member of the thrush family?" "What's a thrush? I thought thrush was what the horse gets in hcr hoofs," she says. 1 am in a muddle now: "A thrush is a song bird but thrush is also an itch and a bit of rot on a horse's hoof," I try to explain. "Sounds silly. Why can a smelly hoof and a, pretty bird have -the same name? Sometimes grownups arc crazy?" Her report card says so many things yet so little about a beautiful grandchild. She will be in Grade two this fall. It seems like last week that she snuggled in my arms on the w the hospital where she was born. And was it just three sat in front of me on the old buckskin marc of many things, settled the world's problems, when she fit so neatly between me and the saddle ay home from days ago she the saddle on and we talked idle from? No, old man. It was three years ago and shc no longer fits in the saddle with you. Shc rides by her- self now and her tinkling laughter is ahead of you on the trail thesc.days. a•v• .•.•W••. 0. M+ n)•JC• J She is so fair of face with eyes that glow with love for this doting old granddad, Pearls grow behind her parted lips- these days as new teeth catch the fading light of the . sun through the window. We should be out there, enjoying this sunset find talking about birds .and grass and flowers and hay and horses but I struggle to compose an ode to a wee lady who has brought the brightest of lights into my life.- We ife:We arc great pals, me and Kait. Nothing is so sweet to this old fool as the laughter of my little girl, the wonderfully feminine way she flicks her hair back, the absolute glee that -encompasses her whole body when she plays a joke on tnc. I visit her with the weight- of the world on my shoulders, after. spend- ing a lousy day in the bureaucratic jungle, the unreasonable rat race of higher education and with three words and a hug, shc can free me from all the weight and pain of life: "I love you, Paw -Bob." - The strain is dispersed, the pain is gone. The whirl of hcr face, the flash of dimples- and two sturdy little arms make the world warm and wonderful. Impossible it -is -to describe -beauty of a child, especially a grandchild. We watched our oldest grandson, a big fellow of -14 years, graduate last week. Ile received a: plaque for sportsmanship and one for French. Ilis parents arc"still wondering how he got the sportsmanship plaque. "Ile's.no sportsman around here," his mother says. "He makes life .miserable for his sisters." Rvan winks across at me with a huge grin across his soon -to -be -a - man fatures. He is wearing a tin grin, a. mouth full of metal bracts but he, too, still likes to visit with his grandparents. Every grandchild is the gift of a world to me • rr' WELCOME FROM SCOTT'S. - Wendy and Julie Lewis are welcomed by Allan and Liz Scott to Wednesday's Customer Appreciation Day spon sored by Scott's Elevators in Lucan.
