' Letters to the Editor - July 11, 1988 Exeter Times Advocate Main Street • Exeter, Ontario - Dcar Editor:. In -response to last week's article "Yet: Another Beach Dispute" we think that property_: owners on and near the beach NEED to he heard . from We -arc the owners of the fence in Llu.'stion and have owned this prop- erty fur nine years. We paid a -price - for this luxury and «'e -love it! Our fence was in. place when we purchased ibis property and sccmal `to US an obvious' entrance to a driveway =and private property. 1 towcvcr, each summer and almost • every. weekend, We have been faced with pcoplc_ who block access to our driveway with their vehicles and proceed a half -a mile down the ..b<<ach and one hundred yards into the lake.- With two small children it leaves us absolutely stranded in.the event of an emergency. - - Tlle gate was erected last summer as we had several incidents of pco- ple'driving in our driveway and parking -on our property. The gate has not been a deterrent and finally last week we broke down and put an unfriendly. "t'rivate Drive" sign on what we feel is a natural, rather at- - tractive looking fence. Our fence certainly does not block access to the beach_ as it is ;used daily. by • many pcoplc' and is also large - - . enough for boat -launching, .large water trucks and cvcn bulldozers which iravclalong the water's edge. To us and our neighbours to thc south, north and east of us, the dig - pule is not how people gain access. to the teai:h but what they do with the privilege of using it. Every spring we take it upon ourselves to clean and sometimes rake the teach in. front of our property of the win- ter debris. We have hauled away L . This is- a common oc- currence duringthe summer: - We have often gone down to thc- beach in the middle of the night to - extinguish a glowing fire that the wind has reignited. Cars race up and down the road at all hours of thc night or as long as th.L> partics last. Why should we, the residents, have to put -up with partics, gar- bage, broken glass, foul language and noise at all hours of the morn- ing by pcoplc who arc allowed to __use this most:treasured-land with no obligations? The question of human waste has been raised to us by every property owner that we know in this arca. What arc thc pcoplc who spend all day and,i lost of the evening on the beach doing for washroom facili- tics and is this not a concern for the people who frequently use this beach, the Township of Ilay, thc Minister of I Icalth and -the Mini- stry of Natural Resources'' 1t most certainly is for us and for anyone who cares about our Great Lakes - ` a..1..• :. ,' ti ''. ‘. The majority of the pcoplc using public beaches pay taxes for which they receive water, sewers, paved roads, street lights, sidewalks and garbage collection. We also pay a substantial amount in taxes and we have none of these services. We also have no protection against people abusing thc property adja- cent to ours. Perhaps, the Town- ship should consider closing the road to all non-residents after sun- set! It -seems to us that only those who pay for this luxury arc the - ones who truly appreciate it, re- spect it and love it. As this letter clearly illustrates; we do not feel that our fence poses. a threat to thc usc of public beach- es but will the lake and the beaches be environmentally safc and there -for thc next generation- to use if more pcoplc don't care?
