Great weather aids 115th Hensall Fair
The Hensall Spring Fair
1983 edition was greeted with
excellent weather conditions
Tuesday night and a large
crowd took in the wide varie-
ty of events.
The fair was officially open-
ed by Huron -Middlesex MPP
Jack Riddell -along with fair
vice-president Stuart Brown
and ladies director Joyce
Pepper.
The mood of the fair was
tempered somewhat with the
sudden death two days before
of Bill Kinsman who showed
the championship calf a year
ago. His brother John is the
1983 president and mother
Frances is the ladies
president.
In his brief remarks Riddell
paid tribue to the entire
Kinsman family for their con-
tinued efforts in making the
fair a yearly success.
Fair secretary Barbie Van
Allen said the crowd was
about 1,650 an increase of 50
from a year ago.
A new poultry show was
added to this year's fair. Con-
tinued for a second time were
the ladies section and sheep
show which were originated
in 1982.
Kevin Varley's call was
chosen as grand champion for
finish in the fair's feeder calf
club competition. The top calf
was purchased by Veal's
Meat Market for $1.20 per
pound.
The reserve champion calf
was shown by Brenda Hern
and was sold to Hyde
Brothers for $1.0212 cents per
pound.
The next six calves in the
best finish department were
shown by Murray McGregor,
Michael McGregor, Katie
Kerslake, Robbie Passmore,
Tracey Parsons and Brian
Falconer.
The senior showmanship
championship was won by
Julie Townsend and the
reserve winner was Mark
McGregor. Next came Brian
Falconer, Brad Falconer,
Murray_ McGregor, Michael
McGregor, Katie Kerslake
and Paul Parsons.
Karen Campbell was the
junior showmanship winner
with Scott Townsend in se-
cond spot. Next came Cathy

An oldtimers division for
those over age was won by
former calf club winner Les

finish. Second was Grant
McGregor followed by Beth
Cooper showing Paul
Passmore's calf and Jim
Carter.
Les Consitt was . the
showmanship winner with
Grant McGregor again in the
runnerup position besting Les
Coleman and Beth Cooper.
In addition to winning the
grand championship,, Kevin
Varley's calf gained 482
pounds, the most in that
department. For the
oldtimers the best gainer was
the calf shown by Beth Cooper
for Paul Passmore.
The sheep show was again
very successful with a large
field of entries. The best ram
in the show was shown by
Louis Emke of Elmwood and
the best ewe in show award
went to Murray Emke.
Entries in the second an-
nual ladies section of the Hen-
sall Fair were down con-
siderably from last year,
especially in the baking sec-
tion. Many attributed this to
the tragic loss of a son suf-
fered by ladies section presi-
dent Frances Kinsman two
days previously.
"A lot of ladies just didn't
have the incentive after what
happened," one of the
organizers explained. "Their
hearts weren't in it."
Joyce Pepper, Mona Alder -
dice, Sandra Turner and
many other stepped in to fill
the gap left by Mrs.
Kinsman's absence.
Joanne Bell was awarded
first in the sewing section,
011ie Cooper was the winner
of the knitting and crocheting,
and Pauline Bell received the
red ribbon in arts and crafts.

Entries were also down in
the baby show with only 11
this year compared to 28 in
1982. Betty McGregor and
Evelyn Falconer organized
the event, assisted with
registration by Ann Gibson.

Stewart, formerly of RRI
Kirkton, had a difficult time
