Faye Gaiser makes regional cage team'
Faye Gaiser has set some
goals in her life and has just
achieved one of them. Faye,
daughter of Don and Maida
Gaiser, Dashwood, whs_
selected to play on the
Southwestern Ontario
regional basketball team.
The team of 10 girls will
play against the six other
regions at the Ontario Sum-
mer Games held in Sudbury,
September 2-5.
To be fair to all areas,
especially the widespread
north, there will be no team
practice prior to an intensive
week at Waterloo University,
July 17-23. All six teams will
be practicing together at this
Junior Development Pro-
gram camp.
Faye, a grade 12 student at
South Huron has been a pro-
minent and dedicated player
of South Huron's successful
basketball team.
High school coach Terry
O'Rourke was chosen to
Without team practices,
Faye must stay in top shape
by conditioning on her own.
The team will play by
F.I.B.A. rules which dictates
a faster game than the
highschool rules. The referee
seldom touches the ball and
there is less chance for the
coach to advise as there is lit-
tle game stoppage.
Playing on this team may
be a stepping stone to bigger
things for Faye. University
and provincial teams play by
F.I.B.A. rules and she will
have the experience of play-
ing with the best girls in'the
province. It will also help her
highschool game as the Pan-
thers will go for another great
season.
There is also a regional
boys team. South Huron
athletes John Mol and Steve
Merner made it to the final
try out in London. Merrier
was out in the first round but
Mol was chosen as an alter-
nate. If one of the first 10 is in-
jured he will be called up to
play. The boys' program is
much like the girls. Mark
Ortelli of Mitchell was the on-
ly Huron -Perth basketball
player to make the team.
