Day, but, in Exeter it has a little ex- tra meaning this year. • The circus is coming to town on Friday, July 1 for two shows at 6:00 and 8:15 p.m. The two show Martin and Downs circus is being spon- sored by the South Huron Rec Centre and that's where tickets. may be purchased. The local sponsoring group receive their largest percentage on all tickets sold in advance, so get them early. All tickets, adult or children, are $3 if purchased in advance. If bought on circus day the prices are increas- ed to $4 for adults and $3.50 for children. Each one and a half hour show features 18 big acts include Craig's elephants which have appeared on CTV's Circus. Organizers of the circus extend a special invitation to everyone to visit the Exeter fairgrounds on the mor- ning of July 1 to see the gigantic Big Top come to life and feeding of the circus animals. A new announcer When the summer harness race meeting, opens at Woodstock on Thursday, June 23 patrons will hear a new voice calling the running of the 10 races on the public address system. Lee Paul of Kirkton who is dwell known entertainer and owns a number of horses in partnership with Bill Ellerington will be at the mike. The Woodstock seasons starts, Thursday, June 23, but, then switches to every Tuesday night until the final night of racing September 27. Closer to home, the spring meet at Western Fair Faceway ends next Monday night while the Clinton track goes every Sunday beginning June • 19 and Goderich Raceway opens Thursday June 30. While talking to Lee Paul Friday he tells us his enter- taining group of the Paul Brothers and Shirley are still busy. They are in Frankenmuth, Michigan this week per- forming three shows a day from Monday to Saturday at the Bavarian Festival and will be entertaining at a telephone convention June 21 in Honey Harbour. Hully Gully busy Randy and Chuck Collins owners and operators of Hully Gully are in the midst of another busy season. The major motocross race of the year goes at Hully Gully on the weekend of July 9 and 10. It's the Labatt's Canadian.. National senior and veteran motocross championships. Competitors from all over Canada will be battling for points, prizes and trophies in one of the most spec- tacular motorsports anywhere. Racing starts at 1 p.m. both days. The event will ap- pear on national television. Hully Gully also has a couple of other events plann- ed for this upcoming Fathers Day weekend. Saturday and Sunday spectators will be able to watch a double header in house league motocross racing and an ATV rodeo will be staged Sunday. Here is a chance for you to take on your friends and neighbours with your three-wheeler on Hully Gully's brand new specially designed three-wheeler ATV track. Included will be rodeo styled events with trophies for all classes. Jenkins throwing strong Chatham native Fergie Jenkins is continuing to strive towards becoming a 300 game winner in major league baseball. Friday, Jenkins pitched the Chicago Cubs to a 7-0 vic- tory over the St. Louis Cardinals. it was his 281st career win and 49th shutout. Fergie was the first Cub pitcheit to throw a complete nine inning game since he did the same thing 7-2 over the Pittsburgh Pirates on' September 15 of the 1982 season. The Cubs have now won nine of their last 11 games and are getting big crowds back at Wrigley Field.' When Jenkins won Friday, the Chicago attendance was 37,024. the largest crowd since opening day of 1861. Tiger history Sunday was a red letter day for veteran Detroit Tiger fans as two stars of the 1934-40 Tigers had their uniform numbers retired. The uniform numbers of Charlie Gehringer 12)•and Hank Greenberg 15 t will never be used again. The on- ly other _Tiger to be so honoured was Al Kaline. • In the ceremonies Sunday, Kaline said Gehringer was the greatest second baseman ever and added, "Ile let his playing do his talking for him." • Greenberg who was American league batting champ four times and hada lifetime batting average of .320 paid tribute to Gehringer saying, "Ile was a perfect ball player. Another one was ,toe Dimaggio.'• Back in Detroit Sunday were other members of the 1934-35 petulant winning clubs including Eldon Auker, Lee Clinton, Hay i(ayworth, Chief 1logsetI, Mary ()wen, Billy Hogell who was Gehringer's double play partner, Joe Sullivan and Jo -Jo White. Exeter with six schools participating. Competition was extremely keen with a three-way tie for the individual championship in the intermediate boys divi- sion. Tied for the top spot were Glenn Hayter, Stephen Central; Scott Russell, J.A.D. McCurdy and Scott Bell, Hensall. The senior girls winner was Laurie Forrester of Zurich Public School with Lori Har- burn from Hensall Public School taking the in- termediate title and Michelle Chalmers of Stephen Central winning the junior section. Rob McLelland of Exeter public school was the junior boys champs and Roger Ward of Stephen Central taking senior honours. Alan Blommaert, Mark Burton and Baden Tinney performed the mound duties allowing only four hits to go with 13 walks and nine strikeouts. Offensively Jamie Bedard led the attack with four hits. four runs scored and four runs batted in. Todd McCann chipped in with two hits, three runs and tl.ree runs batted in and Burton scored three times. Justin Charrette, Mark Russell, Scott Bishop and Rob McLelland scored twice with Glen Quinn, Tinney and Blommaert crossing the plate each once. The next game for the Tyke I team is Thursday night against Exeter II coached by Dennis Bierling: It will be the final league meeting of the year for the two Exeter teams. Holtzmann ,wins at ironwood Club Dave Boltzmann fired a 36 to win low gross honours in the A flight at Tuesday's . regular men's night at the Ironwood golf course. Paul ' Van Gerwen's 29 was best low net. in ii flight, Brad Murray had low gross at "43 followed by Peter Gryseels at 44. Low net winners were Gabby Mol and Bill 'lodge with :n and 37, respectively. Ken Bowen shot a 42 to lake low gross in flight (' and the hest in low net was Chris Relouw. In I) flight, Ted Van Roestel and Norm Whiling were the gross hest at 48 and 49 with net honours going to Bill Steele and Hoy Hunter. Brian McLelland was closest to the pin. Drillers lose to Nairn 2-1 The Exeter Drillers soccer team fought a hard battle against the lop team of the league in Nairn. Goal keeper Ernie Silko and his defensemen, Blayne Epp. Steve Coates and Sean O'Uourke were outstanding in the first half as they kept the Nairn leant to a scoreless lie. Halfway through the second half Nairn got a free kick in- side the 18 yard line and scored. The Drillers came right hack and Dale Hegier tied the score. Both teams fought very hard, hut Nairn got a lucky break and scored the winning goal in the last five minutes of pia v. The Drillers play their next home game against the Ex- eter Centennials Sunday June 19 at 2:00 p.m. at the Cana- dian Canners field.
