Tuesday's visit to Exeter
was part of the yearly circuit
undertaken by the Lucknow
School Concert Band, and Ex-
eter was the first stop of a
nine -school tour. The band's
annual jaunt has taken them
in other years to Michigan,
Quebec and northern Ontario.
The 83 -member hand led by
bandmaster Gord Cayley is
composed of students in
grades five to eight from
Lucknow Public School, and
graduates attending
Wingham, Walkerton and
Kincardine high schools.
Cayley, who is also vice prin-
cipal, \industrial arts and
grade five teacher at the
Lucknow school, began the
band 14 years ago. (Ali four
high schools and 25 of the 27
public schools in Bruce coun-
ty have music programs.)
All band practice is held
after school hours, and the
enterprising young musicians
by their own efforts raise all
money for their brown and
gold uniforms, the transporta-
tion costs of their tours, and
supply one-quarter of the
band instruments. (The rest
are supplied by the school.)
The performance was over
too soon, but after receiving
a standing ovation, the band
encored with a swinging
march to send the students
back to their classes.
Remarking on the warm
reception the band had
received on its first stop.
Cayley said the audience
helps to rouse the hand's en-
thusiasm and vice versa.
The members of the
Lucknow School Concert
Band obviously enjoyed per-
forming as much as the Ex-
eter audience enjoyed the
performance,
