"Why not get a bigger
boat?" he asked his wife. "We
might just as well live for to-
day, and live one day at a
time."
The Sportscraft was ex-
changed for a 28 -foot custom-
built Fairline cabin cruiser
with all the amentities-galley
(kitchen), head (toilet),
shower, closed -in deck and a
powerful 135 -horse Volvo
diesel engine that gives three
miles per gallon of fuel.
The new acquisition was
christened Miss Serenity, a
reminder that Don and Jean
were patron and matron in
the order of the Eastern Star,
and this was the lodge's
Serenity Year.
The Travers figure their
holiday cost approximately
$1,000 per month, and bought
a million dollars worth of
memories. They recall every
detail of manatees and
crocodiles sighted in the St.
Johns River in Florida, two
spic and span Canadian naval
vessels lined up for inspection
at the U.S. Naval base in
Jacksonville, Florida, 300
acres of Billingrath Garden in
Alabama, and the statue of
Liberty right in New York
harbour instead of outside
where they had always pic-
tured it.
The sight of 49 loaded
barges each 35 feet by 195
feet, lashed together seven
wide and seven long being
pushed by a tug on the
Mississippi is still vivid, as is
the recollection of crossing
Lake Michigan in a dense fog,
going 40 miles strictly by
compass, and ending up at the
proper destination, Chicago.
The Travers fondest
memories are of the many
hospitable, helpful people
they met, and the new friends
they made.
Don's advice to anyone tak-
ing to the water in any vessel
from one-man canoe to luxury
yacht is to,join a power
squadron anlearn naviga-
tion, government regulations,
radio procedures and all the
other knowledge required for
safe and enjoyable boating.
(Most local sailors are
members of the Goderich
squadron.)
For anyone planning a
similar trip, he advises taking
fewer clothes than you think
you'll need, and more spare
parts. He wore his suit once
during the eight-month trip,
but was very glad he had a
spare prop to replace the one
that dropped off while he was
docking at Fort Myers,
Florida.
A VHF radio with a
minimum of 50 channels ( the
Travers has 78) is another
essential piece of equipment.
In all their travels, the cou-
ple can recall only two
careless, thoughtless boaters.
Sailors are much more
courteous than car drivers,
Travers maintains.
Having heard that New
York harbour was the scene
of between one and two thou-
sand accidents annually, the
Travers approached the
waterfront with trepidation,
only to find very little activi-
ty 1)on speculates the reces-
sion may have been the
reason "there was nothing to
run into."
Operating a cabin cruiser is
a job for two people. While
Don was at the wheel, Jean
acted as look -out and
navigator, watching for chan-
nel buoys and markers. In
some places they shared the
waterway with fallen trees
and logs up to 12 feet long.
•Besides testing their
marine skills, the trip tested
the Travers personal relation-
ship which proved to be as,
sound as their boat.
"We came back from that
trip, confined in that little
space for eight months, and
we're still married," Jean
said with a merry laugh.
Don is once again engross-
ed in his commercial
refrigeration and appliance
business but way back in an
obscure corner of his mind
lurks a thought no bigger than
a minnow. Wouldn't it be fun
to take Miss Serenity up the
west coast from Vancouver to
Alaska!
