SS board wanted capital
Ministry shuns request
A request for capital funds
by the Huron -Perth Separate
School Board has been turn-
ed down by the Ministry of
Education.
The board learned of the
ministry's position at its May
9 meeting, but will wait until
the results of the provincial
budget are known before it
makes any move.
Stratford trustee Ron Mar-
cy suggested that the board
request a meeting with the
ministry to discuss capital
allocation. Director of educa-
tion William Eckert said
capital funds for the Ministry
might be made available in
the provincial budget.
"For seven years we have.
received this letter," said
chairman Ron Murray ex-
pressing his disappointment
with the ministry's decision,
"Our needs are equal to other
boards."
The board had planned
capital projects in the amount
of $476,000 of which $200,000
is for brick work and the roof
at St. Mary's Separate School
in Goderich. The remainder is
for various roof repairs to a
number of schools in the
Huron -Perth system.
The ministry was requested
to pay 81 percent with the
local taxpayers' share being
about $100,000.
Trustee Marcy's suggestion
was considered a good one by
the board but it will wait un-
til its next meeting to decide
upon a course of action, if
any.
It won't be the first time the
board has personally ap-
proached the Ministry for
capital funds.
"Since I've. been on this
board the most we have ever
received tin capital funds
from the Ministry) is $80,000,"
said Murray.
Marcy added that the
$80,000 had been received
after a visit to the Ministry by
board officials.
The director of education
said the board is only asking
for basic fequirements. Ile
stated the Ministry is in the
business of providing capital
funds for education and if
school boards are expected to
stay in the education
business, funds should be
found.
"As director, I feel i
shouldn't have to spend time
in Toronto for basic re-
quirements," said Eckert in-
dicating they should be for-
thcoming automatically.

Premier unveils
VBG data centre
Premier William Davis
said he hadn't had so much
fun in a long time as he made
hunlurous pokes at local
politicians at the ribbon cut-
ting ceremony of Victoria and
Grey's $2 million data centre
in Stratford.
Marking his first official
visit to Stratford since 1965,
Premier Davis, assisted by
Perth MP Willian Jarvis and
MPP Hugh ]irdighoffer, open-
ed the new data centre
located on Erie Street just
after 10 a.m. on Saturday,
May 14.
A crowd of over 500, which
continually grew gathered
outside the front doors of the
new data centre to hear the
premier and take a walking
tour of the new facility.
In his introduction of Davis,
Victoria and Grey president
Bill Sommerville explained
one of the reasons Davis was
invited to open the new data
center - the premier's father
was one of the first members
of V and G's advisory board.
Putting his own dig in first,
Sommerville commented that
he was sorry to see that Davis
hadn't sought the leadership
of "that other party".
The premier acknowledged
Sommerville's comment but
kidded thaAthe V & G presi-
dent was going to exfremt.s
by pinning a "red" carnation
on him. •
To other PC's in the crowd,
the Premier kidded they
would have to hold up their
own end, "as we have year
after year for some 40 years."
Noting the use of the word
conservative in Victoria and
Grey's literature, Davis
wondered if Sol.imcrville had
seen the light.
On the serious side,
Premier Davis praised Vic-
toria and Grey for its con-
tribution to the economy of
Stratford and the province.
"Stratford is the cultural
and now financial hub of
southwestern Ontario,"
stated the premier.
11e only made one reference
to the recent trust company
affair.
"The good people of the
trust company industry were
so supportive of the govern-
ment," commented Davis.
He cautioned federal MP
Jarvis that consideration by
the federal government of the
Loan and Trust Companies
Act not limit the creativity of
trust companies and not treat
the trust companies as banks.
"They are different," said
Davis.
Wishing Victoria and Grey
good luck in the future, Davis
quipped, "and make sure
your balance sheet is
maintained."
Words of greetings and con-
gratulations were brought
from both Perth's MP and
MPP. Mr. Edighoffer refer-
red to Stratford as
geographically "the rooftop of
Ontario" which has a double
meaning as the Victoria and
Grey building is situated on
top of a hill overlooking the
Avon River.
For his part. Jarvis said the
new data centre is Victoria
and Grey's "demonstration of
confidence in themselves, the
community, the province of
Ontario and in Canada."
Stratford Mayor Ted
Blowes presented both Som-
merville and the Premier
with a framed print of the
Stratford City Hall. Also tak-
ing a crack al humor, the
Mayor presented the Premier
with a whitewash paint brush
and a painter's hat t which
Davis said because of his
humble personality would
have to be reduced in size)
and a City of Stratford pipe.
"What a day for the City of
Stratford," said its Mayor.
Following the opening
ceremonies, Davis along with
other local dignitaries toured
the new facilities.
Victoria and Grey, the
fourth largest trust company
in Canada with $4 Killion in
assets conducted tours of the
facilities during the entire
weekend. it was reported that
about 7,000 people visited the
data centre o11 Saturday
atone.
The Premier left the city at
the conclusion of his tour of
the facility.
