HomeMy WebLinkAboutTimes-Advocate, 1983-05-18, Page 26will likely Lead to the con-
struction of a breakwater and
pier in an attempt to remedy
sand drift and sedimentation
problems that generally
mean only thesmallest boats
can get beyond the river
mouth to marinas and the
harbor.
The work is to be done by the
federal small craft harbors
branch under the special
recovery projects program,
which is aimed at ac-
celerating selected capital
projects.
Ferguson said the study
will include a mathematical
hydrographic model that will
produce in scale the effects of
natural sand drift and river
sedimentation.
"If the results of the study
are positive, then we plan to
construct a suitable protec-
tion in the form of a pier and
breakwater that will
guarantee small craft access
into Port Franks," he told
township council. .
Work on the breakwater
and pier could begin in early
1984, he said, if the study
recommends going ahead.
The project is expected to
provide about 40 jobs over two
years, Ferguson said.
The Ontario regional direc-
tor of the small craft harbors
branch, Mort. Moffatt, said
the study will not include a se-
cond man-made channel
created several years ago
when the original river mouth
channel filled with sand. The
second channel has also been
plagued by sand buildup.

Youth will get
farm experience
One hundred more young
people from Ontario's urban
centres will have a chance to
experience farm life this
summer.
Through the Junior
Agriculturalist Program,
close to 290 youths will be
working on farms, distributed
across the province..They will
experience farmers' valuable
knowledge and learn about
animal husbandry,
machinery handling and
general farm labour.
The experience is not
limited to farm skills, but in-
cludes every aspect of living
with the farm family.
Because of the expansion of
the program's capacity, the
Ontario . Ministry of
Agriculture and Food can of-
fer more opportunities to
commercial farmers.
Students will arrive for a
9 -week period, beginning
June 20. Funded by the On-

'administered by the Rural
Organizations and Services
Branch of the ministry, the
Junior Agriculturalists
receive a training allowance
of $16. a day. The farmer pro-
vides one half of the
allowance plus room and
