Local ball starts
The two Exeter teams playing in the Great Lakes
senior baseball league will see home action this week.
The Exeter Co -Op juniors under the direction of Joe
Fulop and Brad Gregus will ba at Exeter Community
Park tomorrow night, Thursday to meet the Clinton
Colts,
The new Exeter senior team named the Express will
pry off their season opener Sunday afternoon at 1:30
p.m. on their home field with London Servicemaster
supplying the opposition.
Both teams appear to have strong lineups and plenty
of exciting action not only this week but throughout the
entire summer season.
The Express are being organized by general manager
Geary Penhale and Glenn Thurman with senior
baseball experience in Stratford and Dashwood will be
the field boss.
• The Jays are flying
A few weeks ago we predicted the Toronto Blue Jays
would be a contender in the American league eastern
division and that's exactly what they have been doing.
We know a couple of weeks does not a season make,
but, the Jays have been playing not only a solid brand
of ball, but, an exciting and speedy type of game.
At thetime of writing Bobby Cox's club has a season
record of 17 victories and only 13 defeats and is only one
game out of first place behind the front running
Baltimore Orioles.
Starting with the Milwaukee series Monday of this
week, the Jays are in for a tough schedule. They play
20 games in the next 21 days and against their own divi-
sion teams including Milwaukee, Baltimore, Detroit and
Boston. Eight of these games are against the Red Sox
and five with the Tigers supplying the opposition.
The Tigers are currently in last place tied with the
Yankees, but, are showing some signs of bouncing back
to their potential.
The Blue Jays have been getting excellent pitching
and are showing something they lacked in their first six
years of play. That's the ability to bounce back with big
rallies in the late innings and that has happened a cou-
ple of times. Just ask the Cleveland Indians.
Toronto pitcher Dave Stieb leads the league in
strikeouts and could have seven victories by this time.
The biggest and most pleasant surprise on the Toronto
pitching staff is the performance of Luis Leal. The 23
year-old youngster pitched five no -hit innings against
Cleveland, Saturday. The game was delayed for close
to two hours after the fifth inning and Bobby Cox decid-
ed to take Leal out after that much of a wait.
The Jays withRoy Lee Jackson and Randy Moffitt on
in relief held the Indians to only one hit and won the
game 8-1.
The base stealing and hit and running are two of the
big reasons the Jays are scoring more runs.
Friday in Cleveland one inning was tough for the Blue
Jays. In a matter of minutes pitcher Mike Morgan was
hit by a line drive and second baseman Damaso Gar-
cia suffered a sprained ankle.
Actually it was Bake McBride of Cleveland that caus-
ed all the Jays grief. McBride's line drive hit Morgan
and then he slid into Garcia trying to break up a dou-
ble play. •
It isn't just our imagination if we think the Jays are
getting batting help from all parts of the lineup. They
are the only team in the league that has had 11 different
players come through with game winning hits and runs
batted in. The closest are Baltimore, Milwaukee,
Oakland and Cleveland with nine each.
Regardless of the reason, the Blue Jays have been
selected to participate in three NBC Game of the Week
telecasts.
It's either the network officials are impressed with
the Blue Jays early play or it's the fact they are among
the few teams still playing Saturday afternoon games.
The changes include the game against the Orioles
May 28 and against the California Angels June 18. Roth
starting times have been switched from 1:30 p.m. to 1:20
p.m. to accommodate tha telecasts.
Similarly the July 2 game against the Seattle
Mariners will start a half hour later at 2 p.m.
Juniors get victory
The Exeter Co -Op junior
baseball team opened the 198.3
season Thursday with a 3-0
exhibition win over the
Strathroy seniors.
Exeter coach Joe Fulop us-
ed five pitchers and they held
Strathroy to only one hit.
Handling the hurling chores
were Jeff Fuller, Steve
Pearce, Mike Neil. Kevin
Drager and Brian Ilorner.
A single by Bedard scored
the first Exeter run in the
fourth inning and Dave
Hayter's triple sent the final
two runs across the plate in
the seventh.
The other Exeter hits came
from the bats of Kevin
Easterbrook, Bedard, Neil
and Gilmour.
The next action for Futon's

Exeter Royals won only one

fastball league.
Tuesday they travelled to
Lieury to play West Corners
and dropped a 9-4 decision.
They opened the scoring as .
Dan Heywood tripled and
scored as Mike Desjardine
singled.
West Co► vers tied it in their

more runs in the second as
Jeff Lindenfield and Bili
Thomas singled and came
around to score.
West Corners evened it at
3-3 in the second. The Royals

He) wood reached on an error
and came around to score.

runs in their half of the sixth

for the Royals allowing six
hits while striking out four
batters. Rob Thoman picked
up the win in relief of Jack
Berg.
Thursday the Royals edged
the Lieury Jets 7-6, scoring
three runs in the bottom of the
seventh inning. The Royals
opened the scoring as Gary
Skinner blasted a home run in

cond as Bill Thomas walked,
Doug Pearson doubled, Brian
Hodgins reached on a
fielder's choice, Brad
Marsden sacrificed and John
Gillespie singled.
Lieury scored one in the
fourth and the Royals match-
ed that in the fifth as John
Gillespie walked and came
around to score.
Lieury exploded for five
runs in the sixth to set the
stage for the final rally.
Gary Skinner reached on an
error, Phil Turner walked,
Bill Thomas walked and Doug
Pearson hit a sacrifice fly:
Centennials win
The Exeter Centennial
senior soccer team is off to a
good start with four victories
to date, two in exhibition play
and two in league play.
The Centennials played
their first exhibition game
against a new young entry
from Exeter, the Exeter
Drillers composing mainly of
players from high school. The
young team shows a lot of pro-
mise but the more experienc-
ed senior team came out on
top.
The Centennials also played
a . team from St. Marys in
which they had no problem in
winning.
The first league game' for
the Centennials was against
the Drillers in which they won
4-0. The game was mainly .
controlled by the Centennials
but the Drillers had some
close chances.
John Flanagan opened the
scoring with a low hard shot
to the short side to put the
Centennials 1-0 at half time.
Against a strong hard wind in
the second half, the Centen-
nials had to go.to a more ball
control game.
When the Centennials play
ball control with short passes
and some good give and goes
they usually do well. This
case was no different as
Shawn Rotteau added two
goals and Terry Vandewalle
added a single.
Sunday was a pure team ef-
fort even though it didn't look
like it by the score sheet as
Pall Vandewalle led Exeter
with a five goal performance
to beat the .Taxandria team
from Arkona 7-2.
Exeter controlled the ma-
jority of the game with ex-
cellent set-ups by all the other
players on the Exeter squad.
Single goals were added Dick
Lord and newcomer Francis
Hartman.
The Exeter Drillers, show-
ing promise for a first year
team came very close but lost
4-2 to Lucar.
Both Exeter teams are idle
for the coming long weekend
but resume play May 29. Its a
double header in Exeter with
the Centennials playing host
to Lucan at 2 p.m. and the
Drillers playing host to Grand
Bend at 4 p.m.
The two Exeter teams plus
minor soccer are sponsoring
a dance to raise money on
May 28. The Rudy Davis
Band will entertain you with
50's and 60's. Tickets are
available from any of the
players or at the door the day
of the dance.
Ladies golf
The opening of the Iron-
wood ladies golf club at-
tracted 30 participants for a
.game of golf and a pot luck
supper.
Scoring prizes were won by
Janet Buchanan, Helen Bur-
ton, Janet Wedlake, Ann
Lorento and Mary Jane
Taylor.
A door prize donated by
Barn Dow was won by Doris
Hackney.
New members are always
welcome. Club official Helen
Burton says, "Come out and
enjoy the fun Wednesday
evenings around 5 p.m."
Brad Marsden then hit a hard single scoring the tying and
grounder which went for a winning rum.

ing six hits.
