Mr. Campbell noted that those words, taken from the
regimental history, will never b' forgotten.
His memory is also filled with personal experiences,
ones that involved people and places where the soldiers
were located.
"From the beginning, D -Day on June 6,1944, we became
experts in the art of money exchange rates," he
remembered.
The soldiers learned to convert French and Belgian
Francs, Dutch Guilders and German Marks into British
Sterling or good old Canadian dollars.
"A pack of cigarettes, chocolate bars, soap, razor
blades, gum and food items scoffed from the unit kitchen
could be traded for any number of goods and services. A
well-worn request, 'Cigarette for Papa, chocolate for
Mama,' was a by -word. A pair of army boots and a couple
of grey wool army blankets and a pound of sugar or two
was enough to end up with the family farm almost," Mr.
Campbell said.
The language was another matter. With a smattering of
high school French, no Dutch or German, the soldiers
managed to communicate. They became experts at
mime.
By the time the Canadian soldiers arrived in Holland in
the fall of 1944 they were more confident and relaxed.
"We were more familiar with the people, learning bits
of the language. They were sharing their homes with us,
