17. Dordecht, in South Holland, is the oldest city in the
Netherlands. Its history dates back as far as 1271. Today
Dordecht is a major shipbuilding and yachting centre and
still many historical buildings recall the rich past of a
flourishing city of trade.
18. Little Mice in Dutch are "Mulsjes," a candy -coated
anise seed. Eat Muisjes and you'll keep bad spirits away.
They are also supposedly good for nursing mothers.
19. The Night Watch is one of Rembrandt van Rijn's most
famous paintings. It hangs in Amsterdam's
Ri jksmuseum.
20. The Oudewater scales were once used to weigh wit-
ches. In the 16th century accused witches were publicly
put on the scales and the weighmaster would declare that
the suspect was too heavy to ride a broomstick. The witch
would then be issued a certificate to document this in-
formation. Visitors to Oudewater can now test their
broomstick capacity weight.
21. Dutch children and adults often "brown bag it" at
Lunchtime. A typical lunch is bread and meats. As well
every town and village has several bake shops, selling 30
to 40 varieties of bread, meats and cheeses for noon
meals.
22. Villages in Zeeland and South Holland were devestated
when a hurricane drove sea waters over the dikes,
flooding all of Zeeland. The great flood in 1953 took 1,835
lives.
23. Friesland is the place to go mud walking. When the tide
is low pedestrians can walk across the Wadden Sea to
offshore i3lands.
24. "Rijsttafel," meaning rice -table, is a Dutch
gastronomical feast. It's an exotic extravaganza from
Indonesia that includes rice, curried meats, various
vegetables and specially prepared fruits. You can't come
away from a "Rijsttafel" hungry.
25. Amsterdam is the capital of the Kingdom of the
Netherlands, but the seat of the government is at The
Hague.
