The highly visible object is in fact a honored reminder of Clinton a few short decades ago when the town was home to the Royal Canadian Air Force. It was known as one of the finest Radar and Communications school in Canada and became a a model for United States training centres. The base, just south of town, now known as Vanastra, was open from the 1940s until the flags were lowered one last time in 1971. Many of the servicemen as well as civilian employees lived in the town, swelling the population temporarily. Today Clinton's population stands at 3,100. Along with the Klompen Feest, Clinton is also home to another popular celebration, the Spring Fair. Held an- nually for the past 128 years, the Fair boasts western Ontario's largest exhibit of livestock. Competition at the fair also attracts the community's best cooks and needleworkers, and of course the area's prettiest girls who vie for the title of Queen of the Fair. This year the fair will be held on June 3 and 4 at the Clinton Community Park. Summer is a busy time at the park. Each Sunday af- ternoon from June 19 to September 18 the horses are off and running at the track. Called the Family Track, the park has a shady picnic hM0 area and nearby public pool for youngsters to enjoy. For those who want to try their luck, this year the Clinton Raceway will feature tri -actor betting. Community spirit is an important part of Clinton's success. Business people and local residents work together to make the town attractive for citizens and visitors alike. In the past few years the Business Improvement Association has dressed -up the downtown core with parkettes, gardens and sidewalks. The ambitious Horticultural Society members have put their green thumbs to work to give us bright flowers and trees for spring and summer. Within the next two years Clinton's downtown area will be even lovelier when restoration plans for the town hall and library are completed. Just underway, Clinton's grand, historic buildings are being completely renovated and restored to their original beauty. If you want a spot to have a picnic, but don't want to stray far from the main road, visit the Clinton Con- servation Area, just south of town on Highway 4. It's ideal for families who are looking for space to run and romp. There's even a fitness trail for the after -lunch con- stitutional. .Clinton's special events, points of interest and com- munity spirit have all helped to give the town its popular name, "The Hub of Huron County."
