Although we experienced a
very chilly day on Sunday, I
am sure there were a great
many warm hearted mothers
surrounded by their families
on Mother's Day.
On Tuesday evening, the
Ladies Auxiliary held their
regular monthly meeting.
The programme consisted of
several tap dancing numbers
by Janet, Barbara, Donna
and Carolyn Regier. Angela
Fleming played several selec-
tions on her accordion, Mrs..
Annie Finkbeiner read two
Mother's Day poems, .and
Mrs. flatlet VanderBurgt
pleased the audience with
several lovely solos. -
Following the programme,
the residents and visitors en-
joyed refreshments.
Wellington Riehl is still a
patient in South Iluron
Hospital, Exeter. Mrs. Mary
Spacek has returned from St:
Joseph's Hospital, London.
On Friday evening, bingo
was played followed by
refreshments.
On behalf of the Ladies
Auxiliary, we wish to thank
all who patronized (he annual
Mother's day tea and bake
sale on Saturday afternoon,
also all who helped make the
day such a success by their
donations of baking and other
articles. We 'congratulate
Mrs. Madeline Wisser of the
Maplewoods Apartments on
winning the Mother's Day
cake.
The Sunday evening chapel

Rev. Harley Moore of Grand
Bend.

The Huron County branch
of the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food
(()MAF) will be receiving an
additional staff member.
Huron's 'agriculture
representative Don Pullen an-
nounced to Huron County
council at its May 5 meeting
that John Bancroft, current-
ly an agriculture assistant in
the Ottawa Carleton area will
be arriving at the Clinton
OMAF branch in mid-June.
Pullen was presenting his
annual report to county coun-
cil when he made 'the
announcement.
Bancroft, a native of Perth
County, will be the 4-11 con-
tact in the county.

Rapt Home bake sale, Initial flea rnark.t are succeuful
The annual Mother's Day
tea and Bazaar held at the
Rest Home on Saturday was
again a success. In only a
matter of 20 minutes, nearly
all the baking; pies,
decorated cakes, tarts, etc.
were sold out. The plant table
and tea also went well.
The lucky winner of a love-
ly Strawberry Shortcake doll
was' Madeline Wisser of the
Maple Woods Apartments
with the draw being made "by
resident Mrs. Tetreau. Also
thanks to Mary -Lou Erb for
baking and donating the cake.
Proceeds for the auxiliary
totaled up to $326.26.
Thanks to everyone ,who
came and and helped to sup-
port the homeand especially
for all the donations brought
in.
Flea Market
The first Saturday for the
Flea Market at the arena for
Zurich and Hay Township
was a big success. The ice
surface was full of booths with
every description from food,
clothing, antiques, collector's
plates, etc.
It was really worth while
going down to see everything;
and to meet a lot of people you
know and don't know. So if
you missed it Last week, be
sure and come down this
Saturday. It's from 10 a.m. to
5 p.m. and will run until
September 24.
You will be surprised to see
how nice it is!
Maplewoods News
The May birthday party for
the Maplewodds residents
was hosted by Jean Burr and
Madeline Gelinas. Birthday
celebrants were Mrs. Peters,
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Burr and
Clarence Farwell. It was
decided during the business
session that Maplewoods
would participate at the Flea
Market.
After several enjoyable
card games, scrabble and
crokinole, the hostesses serv-
ed a dainty lunch.
The evening closed with
dancing 10 organ music
played by Claude Gelinas.
Spotlight on Fashion
For those of you who miss-
ed going to see the fashion
-show in Exeter last Wednes-
day it sure was a delightful
evening.
"Spotlight on Fashion '83"
was terrific! Jim Swan from
Morning Break, TV London,
was the host. All proceeds
went to the Huron Country
Playhouse. It was nice to get
a preview of all the lates-t
fashions for the summer that
were shown from Merry Rags
of Grand'Bend. The in -look
this year will be stripes. It
was also great to see one of
our own local ladies taking'
part in the show. This was Joy
Hogg of St. Joseph's and she
was just super!
Kest Ilome Meeting
On Tuesday 21 ladies at-
tended the auxiliary meeting
at the Blue Water Rest Home
with roll call taken by Verda
Baechler. The secretary's
report was given by Mary
(Calvin) Gingerich in the
absence of Anne Flaxbard.
The auxiliary recently pur-
chased some exercise equip-
ment for the residents. Blan-
che Bechard made some pret-
ty roses out of ribbon to pin on
each resident for Mother's
Day at the bazaar on
Saturday.
The president, Margaret
Gingerich made final plans
for the bazaar and mentioned
that the next meeting will be
at 2:00 in the afternoon on
June 7 followed by a picnic
supper for the residents. •
The group had made a pro-
fit of $28.50 from Creative Cir-
cle Kits and are still saving
Zehrs tape slips.
A lovely musical program
and lunch had preceded this
business portion.
Mrs. Roberta Robertson of
Vancouver returned home on
Tuesday after spending a
week with her parents, Jim
and Joy Hogg at St. Joseph's.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Tyre
of Winnipeg are presently
visiting with her daughter and
family. All were dinner guests.

Leslie and Debbie and their
families and all enjoyed a
special treat of Pacific
salmon from B.C.. that Rober-
to had brought along with her.
Golden Agers
The Zurich Golden Ager's
enjoyed having lunch at the
ARC Industries in Dashwood
on Monday.
This was followed by a
special presentation made to
Peter Deichert in recognition
of being the oldest member of
the seniors. at the age of 93
and was made an honorary
member. The afternoon end-
ed with o brief business
meeting. '
Canvassers will be out dur-
ing the next week or so collec-
ting for Flowers of Hope Cam-
paign for Mentally Handicap-
ped. Please be generous and
ready when someone comes
to your door.

Weekend visitors with Joe
and Maria Kenda Sr. were
their daughter, Helena from
London and friend, Lilly on
Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. George
Harvey of Redford, Michigan,
spent last week at their cot-
tage north of St. Joseph's.
Forty hour devotions were
held at St. Boniface Parish
last Sunday, Monday and
Tuesday. Assisting Fr.
Mooney was Fr. T. Collins
from St. Peter's Seminary.

Area priest ordained,
celebrates first mass
Several relatives and
friends attended the ordina-
tion of six priests on Saturday
for the'Dioceseof London at
St. Peter's Cathedral by
Bishop Sherlock. One was
Gary Ducharme, son of
Gerard -and Mary Ducharme,
RR 2 Zurich. On Sunday Fr.
Ducharme was honored to
celebrate his first Mass at 3'
p.m. in his home parish of St.
Joseph's which was followed
by an open -house in the parish
hall for the many people who
filled the church. Then a din-
ner- reception was held for
him ire I lensall Community
Centre at'fi:00. It was a very
joyous and happy day for
Gary • and his family. Fr.
Ducharme will now serve as
the associate pastor at St.
Theresa's Church in Windsor.

returned to her apartment at

away for a few weeks to her
daughter's in Kitchener
where she was recuperating
after being ill.
Little Brian Egan of Utica,
Michigan spent two weeks
with his grandparents, Victor
and Irene Hartman while -his
mom and dad, Gary and
Theresa were away on a trip
to Arizona which they were
lucky to win for one week.
They went on to Mexico for a
week; returning back in time
to spend Mother's Day with
Irene on Sunday.

Varna contributions
up in cancer appeal

The Canadian Cancer
Society canvass in the Varna
area showed a generous
response, with donations up
100 dollars over last year, a 33
percent increase. The women
who gave so generously of
their time to canvass their
neighbourhoods were June
Webster, Margaret Hunt,
Mona Stephenson, Joyce At-
chison, Ruby Lefaive, Janet
Webster and Shirley (Mrs:
Wayne) Taylor.
The McAsh family has
presented a plaque in
memory of John and Myrtle
McAsh to ..Varna United
Church. Bill and Floyd
represented the family in the
unveiling and dedication on
Sunday. It is located on the
wall over the pew where they
normally worshipped.
Next Sunday is Rogation
Sunday. Don and Carol
Langford will be the guest
speakers at Varna church.
They are involved in world
relief work, and those who
heard them at the hall last fall
can assure you they are good
speakers.

Leda McAlister in her art
gallery north of Bayfield on
Thursday evening. She had
dug up a large display of
herbs from her garden, and
explained the many uses they
have in medicine, teas, cook-
ing, as insect repellants, salt
substitutes, etc. For instance,
the artemesias, especially
wormwood, are flea and moth

raine Taylor led in the
Mother's Day worship service
at the church prior to the
Bayfield trip. Of particular in-
terest were Maureen's
recollections of how her
mother had influenced her.

business. Margaret Hayter
reported proceeds of $246
from the dessert euchre and
bake sale. Julie Webster
again has the -contract to mow
the church lawn. An invitation
from BrucefieldU.C.W. to at-
tend their Visitor's Day on
June 8 was accepted. A Huron
County Health Day is being
held at Ontario Street Church
this Thursday, May 12.
A bale of good used
clothing, magazines, etc. will
be packed near the end of
May. Donations for it may be
left in the churchbasement.

Gail and Leo DeBus and
