1)MAIN ST EXETER 235
By Carolyn Pritchard
The first meeting of the Ex-
eter 4-H horse and pony club
was held at the home of
Adriaan Brand.
The meeting began with the
looking over of the record
books. The purpose was to see
what we will be doing in the
future. After this was done the
election of officers was held.
The president is Pauline
DeVries, vice-president is
Heather Browning,
Secretary -treasurer is Kim
Merkies and press reporter is
Carolyn Pritchard.
After the elections, mem-
bers watched a film called
"Best Horse". A calendar of
all the events planned for this
year was distributed. Books
containing the topics for the
meetings ahead were given
out.
Exeter court
Continued from front page
the charge and had not been
notified the officer would not
be in court. He also advised
the court he was going west
later to work and would be
unable to come to a later trial
date.
In one of the three cases
that did proceed in Tuesday's
session, Robert Charles, i
1 -Atkinson, RR 1 Centralia,
pleaded guilty to d4iving
while under suspension and
was fined $250 and had his
licence suspended for a fur-
ther six months consecutive
to any current suspension.
He was granted 30 days in
which to pay the fine for the
charge which was laid Oc-
tober 21 in Stephen Township.
Two other men were each
fined $100 after pleading guil-
ty to separate charges of fail-
ing to stop When signalled to
do so by police.
Leonard Stanely Facey, RR

ed on January 30, while John
A. Struyke, Dashwood, had
been charged on April 10.

which to pay the fines. which
were the minimum in both
instances.

sored by the high school stu-
dent's council drew over 200
parents and students to be
entertained by eight acts,
some of legitimate talent and
others purely for fun.
The $50 first prize was well
earned by The Band, a trio of
grade nine boys, Darren Tin-
ney, John Farwell and.Mark
Hartman. The crowd was
bopping and shaking to The
Band's top class songs. Drew
Hassleback added his talents
on guitar and in his shoes to
The Band and to several other
acts.
The Unknown Step -Outs
tap-danced their way to the
$30 second prize. The eight
girls, all Regiers, were in
good form last Friday.
Jay Alblas sang a- solo
unaccompanied. He had writ-
ten his own thought-provoking
and heart -touching song,
decrying the world's situa-
tion. His voice and lyrics had
the audience stilled and think-
ing in the otherwise just -for
fun evening. Jay well deserv-
ed his $20 third prize.
Judges, Joe Wooden. prin-
cipal; Pete Zankowski,
teacher; and Bobby Knox,
renowned janitor, made the
distinction between the above
talent and *zest of the acts.
The Four plus One accor-
dion group who recently had
high marks at the Kiwanis
Festival brought their talent
to the South Huron stage, but
were disappointed with their
performance.
A group of grade ten girls
put on the comic skit
McPickup with the well -
muscled Rob Tait being their
eventual purchase.
The Nine Neat Guys relied "
on their own voices for their
second South Huron ap-
pearance. These senior. boys
sang "Nobody" and
"Twisting by the Pool" with
appropriate actions.
A group of grade twelve
girls translated Dr. Hook's
song "You Make My Pants
Wanna Get Up and Dance"
into a literal, well -
choreographed dance.
Bob Sangster performed a
stand-up routine with a
puppet.
Messrs. of Ceremonies,
Scott Batten and Mike Flem-
ing. kept the audience enter-
tained between acts with their
mind boggling feats of
ingenuity.
Middlesex education
taxes increase 12.6%
Middlesex County
ratepayers will pay an
average 12.6 percent more in
education taxes this year
following the•setting Monday
night of a county school board
budget of $39,982,737.
Due to the complicated
natureof assessment requisi-
tions throughout the county,
the actual increase presented
to each municipality will vary
froma low of 9.2 percent in
West Williams Township to a
high of 19.7 in Metcalfe
Towt,ship.
Westminster Township,
which pays the highest single
requisition to the county, will
eee.its education taxes go up
10.9 percent, while London
Township, the municipality
with the second-largest tax
,requisition; will pay 12.4 per-
cent more. The Strathroy
education tax goes up )1.4
percent.
After weeks of discussion
and about $1.5 million in cuts,
trustees approved the budget
with one last blast of disap-
proval aimed at the provin-
cial goverpmept and its
education funding policies; '
Busihess superintendent'
Bill Ashby told trustees that
in the current budget year
provincial education grants
would pay about 56 percent of
the board's $39.9 million ex-
penditures. Ten years ago, he
added, that figure had been 68
percent.
Trustee Delmar Cobban
later argued that if the pro-
vince intended to keep on cut-
ting its education grants, local
boards might be forced to
react by cutting the school
year to save costs. He
estimated that shutting the
school system down two
weeks early could save the
board in excess of $1 million
in costs and salaries.
. Although concerned about "
costs, trustees agreed they
hlhd no choice but to go ahead

with a major $546,000 renova-
tion of Ekcoe Central School
in Glencoe, a 14 -year-old
building with a leaky roof.
Ashby told trustees the
ministry of education had
.agreed to finance the renova-
tion project but had warned
that its 5380,000 in funds would
not be available until 1984. It
had advised the board,
however, to proceed this year
using its own reserve fund to
finance the cost.
In one last cost-cutting
move, trustees decided to
discontinue string music pro-
grams at its Strathroy
schools, and then, with some
relief put the seal on a budget
that represents an 8.9 percent
increase in spending over
1982.
