South Huron gy
South Huron's gymnastics
team was again dominant at
Ifuron•Perth last Thursday in
Listowel. The team's hard
work and determination paid
of[ with the overall team title,
three of the four divisional
team championships and two
individual championships.
Coach Gayle Ecker, who
took the place of Carey Eddy
who was on maternity leave,
Enna

Was very proud of her twenty
gymnasts. "They all did very
well, but I had no idea of the
difference in total score".
Ecker and the Exeter gym-
nasts thought the race for best
overall team would be close
but South Huron with 343.92
points overwhelmed the
nearest competitor from the
20 member Norwell team by
over 130 points.
The Huron -Perth 'gym-
nastics championship has on-
ly been out of South Huron's
hands once in the past twen-
ty years. This success should
continue with strong junior
teams being developed by the
Saturday gymnastics pro-
gram, even though other
schools are becoming in-
creasingly stronger and more
competitive. The increased
calibre of competition was
evident on Thursday with
many gymnasts executing
very difficult moves.
South Huron's junior team
captured the team title while
Lee O'Rourke in her promis-
ing debut was the junior
overall champ with Rose
Morrissey in fourth overall.
Lee didn't win on any ap-
paratus but her scores were
very high. Ecker believes that
this was Lee's preparatory
season and that she will daz-
zle next year.
Lee's routine on the uneven
bars was full of difficult
moves for a score of 8.45 and
.second place. Fifth place was
earned by Marlene Ver-
maeten. Both Lee and
Rosemary Morrissey had
nerve problems on the beans
but their advanced difficulty
gave them third and fifth,
respectively.
She shone on the floor but
was still only granted second
place. A near -flawless floor
routine was Jodi McBride's
ticket to WOSSA and third
place. Rose finished fifth for
her floor. Lee O'Rourke's
handspring vault earned her
second place. Other junior
gymnasts, Kelly Johns and
Tracey Milloche paired well
and gained the experience to
place them higher next year.
South Huron easily won the
intermediate team title with
Leigh Bernard and Lisa Run-
dle respectively second and
third overall. Lisa, who mov-
ed down to the intermediate
level because she broke her
toe at last year's Huron -Perth
came back with no fear this
year.
Leigh's only win came with
her flowing bars routine. Se -
cold place deservedly went to
Sue Birmingham who also
skates during the winter. Lisa
Rundle placed fourth on the
bars and executed a steady,
fearless beam routine to cap-
ture second followed by Leigh
Bernard in third and Montaha
Osman came fourth on the
beam.
A mark of 8.5 on Leigh's
snazzy floor routine gave her
second place. South Huron
placed well on floor with Lisa
Rundle, Montaha Osman and
Sue Boyle receiving third.
fourth and fifth respectively.
Leigh's somewhat unpractic-
ed vault still earned third
while Susan Birmingham
placed fifth on the vault. -
The elite division was com-'
pletely dominated by SH with
only one other competitor.
Despite a sub -normal' day,
Catherine Patterson earned
the individual championship
followed closely by teammate
Sharr Jesney. Sarah
McClure. in her last Ilur•on-
Perth gymnastics competi-
tion placed fourth overall.
Catherine's strength and
timing made her bars routine
flow to an 8.63 and first place.
Starr Jesney whose recent
trip to Florida didn't mar her
performance was second with

Sarah McClure third and
Jody Hay fifth on the elite
bars.
All the elites had trouble
with their beam mount. Thal
was 'Pits' Patterson's only
fall, which hurt the rest of her
routine, yet her control
returned for first position. Se-
cond place was earned by
Stasi Jesney and Sarah
McClure placed fourth. Carla
Solomon's concentrated effort
on the beam earned her fifth
place.
Starr Jesney's incredible
tumbling gave her 8.5 and a
surprise victory on the floor.
Starr said "I can't believe I
beat Pits!" Catherine failed
to laud her Arabian which has
given her trouble all season.
Pits was second with 8.2.
Sarah McClure's well -
executed and danced routine
earned fourth place.•
South Huron's vaulting has
seldom been strong as was
evident throughout the day.
Exeter elites placing second,
third, fourth and fifth were
respectively Starr Jesney,
Catherine Patterson, Sarah
McClure and Carla Solomon.
After qualifying on the bars
Jody Hay injured her knee
while practicing her beam
routine. She was unable to
compete on the beam or the
floor and it is doubtful that
she will be able to do her bars
al WOSSA.
The senior division was the
weakest for South Huron.
Despite an injured lower leg.
Jackie Cottrell decided to risk
further injury and compete to
qualify for WOSSA. Jackie
braved the pain to qualify on
all apparati except for vault
which she dropped.
Sandra McCurdy placed
third individually overall.
helped by a flawlessly ex-
ecuted 8.4 first place on the
uneven bars. Jackie placed
fourth on bars and floor but
should be able to do better at
WOSSA, if she is able to com-
pete. Sam'ra finished third on
the floor and fifth on the v9ult.
Darlene McBride's steady
beam routine gave her fourth
spot while Jackie managed
sixth.
Gail Willard had a disap-
pointing day but still helped
her team to the
championship.
Huron -Perth was allowed to
increase its number of
WOSSA qualifiers to the top
six •finishers on each ap-
paratus because of the decline
in competing schools. South
Huron qualified 17 girls so
should have the largest
representation at Parkside
Collegiate in St. Thomas this
Saturday. WOSSA competi-
tion begins at 9 a.m. and
should be over at 5 p.m.
Coach .Ecker is confident
that the team will be very
competitive and hopes that
they will be able to keep the
WOSSA championship which
they won for the first time.
last year.
The top two finishers at
WOSSA qualify for OFSSA.
held April 22 and 23 in Toron-
to. Catherine Patterson has
the skill and determination to
again be an all -Ontario
finalist. This could be Starr
Jesney's year after being a
substitute for the past three.
Ecker believes Lee O'Rourke
will also qualify for OFSSA.
Ecker plans to work the
team very hard this week in
preparation for Saturday's
competition. To accustom the
girls to pressure and to give
everybody a chance to see
good, competitive gymnastics
all the girls will put on their
routine tomorrow afternoon
at 2:30 p.m. in the high
school's old gyrnnasiuln. Ad-
mission will be charged to
help the gymnasts pay for
their new balance beam.

trophy to Leigh Bernard of SHDHS.
Mol named to
Free Press stars
John Mol, a grade 12 stu-
dent at South Huron, has had
the honour'of being chosen for
the London Free Press all-
slar basketball team.
Dale Stolk who compiles the
Free I'ress top 10 and covers
all WOSSA games felt Mol's
ability to play hard earned
him a forward ix)sition on the
number one all-star team.
Afol beat out the towering cen-
tre from Catholic Central in
London.
Being named to the Free
Press team • is only an
honorary position as the team
never plays together. Three
five -member teams were
chosen, Mol making the
number one team.
South Huron's 6'6" centre
helped the Panthers to their
Huron -Perth championship
and had a very high seasonal
point average.
